Andy Lee – Fortune favours the brave

1-Andy Lee wins WBO titleBy Daniel Hughes: You wonder how former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin must be feeling this morning? Quillin, guided by his adviser Al Haymon, decided to vacate his WBO middleweight title rather than face the then undefeated Russian Matt Korobov. To understand the decision has made boxing fans question the direction Peter Quillin’s career is heading. The money on offer for the fight, too good to turn down you would think, Quillin’s team did indeed turn down the offer.

For Quillin’s team to turn down a career high $1.4 million for facing Korobov, after Jay Z owned Roc Nation Sports bid $1.9 million dollars to promote the fight will probably be hurting Koborov this morning also. Korobov was due to collect a career high $500,000 dollars to face the undefeated Quillin. Instead, he faced Andy Lee last night with the vacant WBO title on the line and his unbeaten record and for a far, far smaller payday.

Andy Lee hopes to wear Korobov down late in the fight

lee564545By Scott Gilfoid: #4 WBO Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) will be bringing a 5-fight winning streak into the ring this Saturday night on December 13th when he takes on #1 WBO Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Organization middleweight title at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Lee, 6’2”, hasn’t fought a solid middleweight since his 7th round destruction at the hands of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in 2012, and for that reason it’s difficult to know for sure what we’ll get from the stork-like Lee in this fight.

Golovkin could fight Cotto-Canelo or Korobov-Lee winner, says Arum

golovkin5676(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Tonight, WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will be in the ring to face former WBC interim 160 pound champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Rubio lost his interim title last Friday when he failed to make weight at the weigh-in. Golovkin can still win the WBC interim title, but Rubio can’t. He can’t win Golovkin’s WBA title either.

Golovkin is expected to get through this fight with flying colors to move forward to what he hopes are bigger and better fights in the future. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes Golovkin has a chance to fight the winner of the proposed fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Arum also thinks the winner of the December 13th fight between Matt Korobov and Andy Lee is a possibility for Golovkin.

Matt Korobov vs. Andy Lee possible for vacant WBO 160lb title on December 13th

lee91By Allan Fox: It now looks like #3 WBO Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) will be facing #1 WBO Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs) for the vacant WBO middleweight title. The date that they’re looking for is December 13th. This is for the WBO title that Peter Quillin vacates last September when he was supposed to be fighting Korobov for the belt.

Earlier, the World Boxing Organization approved Demetrius Andrade to face Korobov for the vacant WBO middleweight belt after Andrade’s team applied for the spot. But soon after, Andrade opted to stay at 154 and defend his WBO title. He still doesn’t have an opponent for his next fight, but he preferred to stay at 154 rather than move up to 160 to fight Korobov for the WBO title. #2 WBO Billy Joe Saunders was then going to step in and face Korobov for the vacant WBO middleweight title.
