By Jim Dower: Former world title challenger Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35 KOs) made an impressive welterweight debut in stopping Emanuel Taylor (20-5, 14 KOs) in the 5th round on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Matthysse knocked Taylor down with a left-right combination in round 5. The bloody and battered Taylor got back to his feet, but referee Jay Nady chose to halt the fight without letting the action resume.

Canelo looked pretty stocky and almost at his fighting weight in coming at 164. The added 9 lbs. that he put on over his normal self-created 155 pound catchweight class seemed to suit him well.

By Eric Baldwin: The big punching Lucas Matthysse will be fighting at welterweight against 140lb fighter Emmanuel Taylor on the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. card on May 6 on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena I Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s unknown if the Matthysse-Taylor fight will the co-main event on the Canelo-Chavez Jr. card. If so, it’ll be kind of a disappointment to some boxing fans, because the 26-year-old Taylor has lost many of his recent fights.

He’s lost 3 out of his last 6 fights since 2014. Taylor was beaten by Chris Algieri, Adrien Broner and Antonio Orozco. The fights were competitive and close, but Taylor still lost. Given that the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. card is on HBO PPV, you’d like to see more meaningful fights.

By Eric Baldwin: 34-year-old Lucas Matthysse has been added to the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard on May 6. Matthysse’s opponent still hasn’t been selected by his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions, according to Dan Rafael. The fight is expected to take place in the 147lb division, as Matthysse is moving up in weight from light welterweight.

Matthysse will have been out of the ring for a year and a half by the time he fights on May 6. He suffered an eye injury in his 10th round knockout loss to Viktor Posto in a failed effort to win the WBC World light welterweight title on October 3, 2015.

By Dan Ambrose: Former interim WBC light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) will be resuming his boxing career in April or May of 2017, according to Fight News. The 34-year-old Matthysse hasn’t fought since being stopped in the 10th round by Viktor Postol in October 2015.

Matthysse suffered an eye injury in that loss and he’s been out of the ring ever since then. By the time that Matthysse does fight again, he’ll have been out of action for at least year and a half. The 5’6 ½” Matthysse wants to fight at welterweight now.
