Sprott beats Gavern, captures Prizefighter

sprott44By Scott Gilfoid: British high level journeyman heavyweight Michael Sprott (40-21, 17 KO’s) took advantage of an elbow injury to his opponent journeyman Jason Gavern (24-17-3, 11 KO’s) to capture the heavyweight Prizefighter tournament and the winning cash of £32,000 on Thursday night at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, in London, United Kingdom.

The judges scored it 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 in favor of Sprott. The 30-27 scores were laughable because Gavern had really dominated Sprott in the 2nd round and had him hurt. In the 3rd round, Gavern injured his right elbow early in the round and was unable to throw any punches with his right hand for the remainder of the fight. The fact that two of the judges gave Sprott every round was just so, so sad. It means that Sprott would have still won the fight even if Gavern had dominated the 3rd round like he done in the 2nd.

McDermott stops Olubamiwo, Gavin defeats Lomax

By Sean McDaniel: After losing his last four fights, Big John McDermott (26-7, 17 KO’s) looked incredibly happy to be facing the inexperienced knockout artist John McDermott TKO 1 Larry Olubamiwo (10-2, 9 KO’s) on Saturday night at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London. McDermott, 30, simply overpowered Olubamiwo with short power shots, knocking him down two times before referee Jeff Hinds finally halted the fight at 1:15 of the 1st round.

David Haye has given us hope at world level but with his decision to retire at 32 the Brits will be looking elsewhere for someone to fly the flag. My question is do any of them have what it takes to succeed at the top?

Both Dallass and Olubamiwo performed on the undercard, but actually out-shown both McDermott and Fury in getting past their opponents in impressive fashion.

Williams Defeats McDermott, Looks Terrible

By Nate Anderson: In one of the worse fights I’ve seen in awhile, BBBofC British heavyweight champion Danny Williams (41-7, 31 KOs) defeated John McDermott (25-5, 16 KOs) by a 12-round split decision on Saturday night at the Crowtree Leisure Centre, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-111 for Williams and 113-115 for McDermott. I personally had Williams winning eight rounds to three with one round even.
