Ingle: Kell Brook wants next fight in early 2017

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-88

By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook has already had surgery on his broken right eye socket that he suffered against knockout artist Gennady Golovkin earlier this month on September 10 in London. Brook wants to get back inside the ring in early 2017 to resume his career. When Brook does get back into action again, he only wants to be fighting the best in boxing.

Brook specifically wants Saul Canelo Alvarez, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto. That sounds like a good plan on the face of it, as Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) might be able to get one of those names to fight him straightaway in early 2017. However, it might become increasingly difficult for Brook to get all of those big names to fight him unless he starts winning again.

Brook undergoes surgery to repair broken eye socket

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-76

By Adam Godfrey: IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook underwent surgery last week to reverse the damage caused to his right eye socket during his TKO loss to Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin on September 10th. Surgery was presumably delayed for two weeks to ensure the swelling had abated sufficiently for the surgeon to carry out the operation, which, according to Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle, involved told The Star:

“…The surgeon-who was called Mohammed Ali, believe it or not- going up through his gums, his front teeth, moving an eye to one side and then sorting out the fracture”.

Golovkin had NO respect for Kell Brook

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-30

By Scott Gilfoid: According to trainer Abel Sanchez, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin had no respect at all for Kell Brook in their fight on September 10 of this month, and that’s why Golovkin was sloppy in the fight. Sanchez says Golovkin could have made it a very technical fight and boxed the 30-year-old Brook if he wanted to, but he had no reason to, being that Brook had no power and couldn’t hurt him.

Golovkin ended up breaking Brook apart in the 5th round causing his trainer Dominic Ingle to throw in the towel to save him from getting badly hurt. Brook’s right eye socket was broken by the power of Golovkin’s left hook in the 2nd round. Brook would later say that he could have been blinded in his right eye if he had stayed in the fight and continued to take blows to the head.

Hearn wants Canelo, Cotto or Khan for Brook

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-70

By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s still committed to matching his recently beaten fighter Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Amir Khan or Miguel Cotto in his next fight. Brook had a short operation to repair his broken right eye socket from his 5th round stoppage loss to unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin on September 10.

Hearn says Brook won’t be able to spar for 10 to 11 weeks. Hearn says Brook will be returning to the ring in the sprint of 2017, so we’re looking at him coming back potentially in time for Canelo’s next fight in May of next year.

Liam Smith willing to fight Kell Brook

1-canelosmith_hoganphotos4

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith says he would be open to a fight against the recently beaten welterweight Kell Brook if the money is right for a fight against him. Smith, 28, lost his title last Saturday night in getting stopped in the 9th round by Saul

“Canelo” Alvarez at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Smith was dropped three times in the fight, and really did nothing to distinguish himself other than fighting hard in the 4th. The rest of the fight saw Smith putting pressure on Canelo in a sporadic manner rather than consistent pressure. Even though Canelo looked flawed, beatable and limited, Smith’s uneven pressure and low work rate sunk any chances he had in winning the contest.

Kell Brook interested in Canelo fight

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-82

By Scott Gilfoid: Fresh off his defeat to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, Kell Brook says he would like to now fight newly crowned WBO junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Brook got a taste of what it’s like in being in a huge fight with Golovkin, and now he wants another big fight against Canelo.

A fight of that nature would have to take place in 2017, being that Canelo can’t sit around waiting for Brook’s broken right eye socket to heal. Canelo needs an opponent to be selected SOON for his December 10 fight on HBO pay-per-view. It won’t do Canelo any good if he’s waiting for Brook to lick his wounds for four or more months before he can fight again.

Mayweather: We’re waiting for Golovkin to move up

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-58

By Dan Ambrose: Superstar boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he thinks middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was losing his fight last Saturday night against Kell Brook at the time of the stoppage in round five at the O2 Arena in London, England. Mayweather was watching the fight, and he had Brook ahead of GGG.

Mayweather says he wouldn’t have had the fight stopped if he was working the corner. He would have let the fight go on. Mayweather says he respects Brook for taking a big risk in stepping up two weight classes to fight Golovkin. Mayweather says he’s waiting for Golovkin to move up in weight to take his own risks. Why Mayweather feels it’s so important that Golovkin move up in weight is the big question.

Amir Khan says Kell brook fight possible in 2017

khan836

By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like Amir Khan’s knockout loss to Saul Canelo Alvarez last May has instilled a sense of urgency in Khan with him talking about wanting to fight Kell Brook. That fight would likely take place at the end of 2017. Khan says he wants a tune-up fight in his next match in January.

Let’s be honest; Khan can’t afford to wait much longer before fighting Brook, because both guys are nearing the end of their careers in terms of being relevant fighters. If they don’t fight each other soon, it’ll be too late for their fight to attract interest. I know some boxing fans will say that Brook is only 30 and has a ton of time remaining in his career.

If Brook were to go back down to 147 and go after WBC champion Danny Garcia or WBO champion Jessie Vargas, then I think he might have some more time left as a relevant contender/paper champion. However, Brook says he wants to fight at 154 to fight the winner of the Liam Smith vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez fight. I can’t see Brook winning that.

De La Hoya: Golovkin looked vulnerable against Brook

BOXING

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and his fighter Saul “Canelo Alvarez weren’t impressed with what he saw of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) in his fight against welterweight Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) last Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Despite Golovkin getting the win by a 5th round knockout, De La Hoya said that Golovkin looked “vulnerable” against Brook in his first fight against a guy that could move around the ring on him. De La Hoya further said that when Canelo gets inside the ring with Golovkin, it won’t be a pretty sight. De La Hoya said that Canelo still isn’t ready to fight Golovkin.

He’s waiting for Canelo to grow into 160lbs. De La Hoya believes that Canelo could be moving up to middleweight by the end of this year in his next fight on December 10 on regular HBO. The potential opponents for Canelo’s next fight are from the following fighters: David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Billy Joe Saunders, and the winner of the Willie Monroe Jr. vs. Gabriel Rosado fight.

“Golovkin looked vulnerable against the first real fighter who can move. We see things in Golovkin that are going to be exposed when they fight and it’s not going to be pretty,” De La Hoya said to the latimes.com. “That’ll happen when Canelo fills into his body at 160 [pounds] and that’s going to be this year, probably.”

Brook’s promoter targeting Canelo, Cotto or Khan for next fight

Image: Brook’s promoter targeting Canelo, Cotto or Khan for next fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite Kell Brook’s future being uncertain following a broken eye socket in his loss to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last Saturday night, Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is targeting Saul Canelo Alvarez, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto for his next fight.

It seems that Hearn is a little ambitious now that Brook has finally tasted the big money in his loss to Golovkin, and he’s hoping that he can get another money fight once he comes back from his injury. Hearn is saying that HBO is interested in a fight between Brook and Canelo in May.
