IBF orders Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook fight

porter3222By Scott Gilfoid: The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has reportedly ordered a fight between IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) and #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s), according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Porter just finishing obliterating Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO’s) in 4 rounds last Saturday night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC, and already he’s being ordered to face the untested Brook.

Porter has no problem taking the fight with Brook, because he feels like he matches up well against him and most of the other fighters in the welterweight division right now. Brook doesn’t have an inside game, and this fight could end rather quickly unless Brook takes a crash course in learning how to fight in close.

Kell Brook: Let’s see how Porter does against a young lion like me

brook7777By Scott Gilfoid: No.1 WBO 147lb contender Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) saw IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter’s 4th round TKO win over Paulie Malignaggi last Saturday night. Brook says it was a good performance from Porter, but he thinks it’ll be a different story with him when he faces Porter. Malignaggi, 33, is clearly nearing the end of his career and not the fighter he once was. With the 27-year-old Brook, he’s still not yet cut his teeth on 1st tier opposition after 10 years as a pro.

Brook said this on his twitter about Porter’s performance: “Great performance @ShowtimeShawnP let’s see how you are with me! who is also a young lion! #AndTheNew.”

Porter is all wrong for Kell Brook

porter02By Daniel Hughes: Over here in the UK the Shawn Porter-Paulie Malignaggi fight drew a lot of media attention for several reasons. Malignaggi is very popular here, because his analytical boxing breakdown of fights as much as his technical skills admired. He’s a fantastic talker a big career ahead in the media world awaits.

The fact Kell Brook was awaiting the winner added to the intrigue. We now know who he will face. Brook speaking in the build up to Saturday night’s fight made no real secret of who he wanted to face ‘The Magic Man’, for many reasons now apparent to those who saw the dismantling of Malignaggi in Washington.

Kell Brook will have big problems with Shawn Porter

porter2By Scott Gilfoid: After seeing how easily IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) dispatched former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO’s) last night in Porter’s 4th round TKO win at the DC Armory in Washington, DC., I think No.1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) is going to have major problems trying to beat him.

Not only will Brook have to leave his home country of the UK to take the fight in the United States, but he’s going to have to figure out how to fight on the inside against the brawling Porter. I don’t think that’s humanely possible for Brook to do in one training camp. Brook struggled in his first fight against Carson Jones in 2012 when the American smothered Brook’s offense and forced him to fight on the inside for long stretches.

Kell Brook will likely need to travel to U.S to fight Porter-Malignaggi winner

brook3By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF contender Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) will likely need to make one of his rare trips outside of the UK to fight on foreign soil if he wants to get a chance at facing the winner of this Saturday’s match-up between IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (23-0-1, 14 KO’s) and challenger Paulie Malignaggi (33-5, 7 KO’s) at the DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

The 26-year-old Porter, who is the favorite to hold onto his IBF title on Saturday, isn’t going to travel to the UK to defend his title in front of Brook’s fans. That’s just not going to happen. Porter isn’t going to want to put himself into a situation where he might need to knock Brook out cold just to make sure he gets the win, so Brook is probably going to have to pack his suitcase for this fight.

Bellew beats Brudov; Brook destroys Robles

bellew4By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBC Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) defeated Russian Valery Brudov (41-5, 28 KO’s) by a 12th round TKO on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Bellew caught a desperate Brudov with a left hook to the head in the 12th round to get the stoppage. Brudov was attempting to throw a left hook of his own at the same time, and he never saw the punching coming at him. Bellew also knocked Brudov down in the 2nd and the 6th rounds.

What we learned from this fight is that Bellew can dish it out, but he sure as heck can’t take it in return. It’s the same thing we saw from Bellew while he was fighting in the light heavyweight division.

Shawn Porter vs. Paulie Malignaggi on April 19th, Winner Must Fight Kell Brook

brook324By Michael Byrne: Shawn Porter has arranged a voluntary defence of his new IBF 147lb title with the biggest available name, Paulie Malignaggi, but the IBF have stated that the winner must fight mandatory challenger Kell Brook within 90 days. This is great news all round. Porter gets to fight another big name after springing onto the big stage with his upset victory over Devon Alexander.

Malignaggi didn’t get his rematch with Broner, nor a fight with Maidana to get his belt back, but now he gets a chance to become a three-time world champion. And Kell Brook, after challenging Gary Russell Jr. for the award for the most consecutive tune-up fights ever, will finally fight for a title (assuming it isn’t repeatedly cancelled through injuries again, as was the case with his proposed fight with Alexander).

Kell Brook expects tough fight from Alvaro Robles on Saturday

brook323552By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Kell Brook (31-0, 21 KO’s) is facing yet another tune-up this Saturday night against Alvarado Robles (17-2, 15 KO’s) to get ready for a possible world title shot in the Summer against IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter. Brook must beat Alvarado to get to get his title shot against Porter. Brook has looked poor at times against some of the weak opposition that he’s been matched against, so you can’t really say for sure whether he can even beat a 2nd tier fighter like the little known Robles.

Certainly Brook’s controversial win over Carson Jones in 2012 showed the ceiling of his talent, and how he can be beaten against fringe level fighters. You can say that Brook has been taking nothing but tune-up fights for his entire 10-year pro career, because there’s not been one risky fight among the 31 on his resume. Sadly, Brook was said to have been stepping up in his last fight when he fought former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko last October.

Kell Brook vs. Alvaro Robles on March 15th at Echo Arena, in Liverpool, UK

brook5By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport has finally found an opponent for #1 IBF, #7 WBO, #10 WBC welterweight contender Kell Brook (31-0, 21 KO’s) to fight on March 15th and instead of it being a well known 147 lb contender, Hearn has dug up someone named Alvaro Robles (17-2, 15 KO’s) from Mexico.

Honestly, I’ve never heard of Robles before, and he’s not ranked in the top 15. Of course, Robles is Brook’s tune-up opponent, so that explains him being an obscure opponent without a top 15 ranking. But given that Brook has really fought mostly obscure opposition during his 10-year pro career, this fight is pretty much Brook sticking with the status quo.

The Kell Brook problem

By Daven: Having watched welterweight contender Kell Brook fight many times on Sky Sports one can clearly see the guy is special. (no pun intended) However his fan base is mainly comprised of people from Sheffield and hardcore boxing fans within Britain. This basically means he is no position to call out Amir Khan; a man synonymous with British boxing whether you like him or not.
