Braehmer’s promoter talks Cleverly fight

cleverly677

By Scott Gilfoid: Kalle Sauerland, the promoter for WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs), recently made an odd choice in selecting the struggling, some say ‘over-the-hill’, former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) as the German Braehmer’s next opponent for his title defense on October 1 in Germany. It was a weird choice by Sauerland for him to pick Cleverly as an opponent for Braehmer, because his career is been sagging for the last several years.

Cleverly has lost two out of his last three fights and three out of his last six. Sauerland seems to be making a fight many years too late. At the minimum, the Braehmer vs. Cleverly fight is three years late, because that’s when Cleverly’s career started going into a steep downward nosedive with him losing to Sergey Kovalev by a 4th round knockout in 2013.

Losses to Tony Bellew and Andrzej Fonfara have quickly followed for Cleverly. He’s now coming off a loss to Fonfara, and heading towards journeyman status. I don’t see the 29-year-old Clevelry being able to pull his career out of the nosedive that it’s right now, because the dvisiion has improved too much for him to do anything.

Juergen Braehmer fights Nathan Cleverly on Oct.1

cleverly444

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite having lost two out of his last three fights, former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOS) will be getting a title shot against WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) on October 1 at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

Cleverly, 29, was beaten in his last fight by Andrzej Fonfara by a 12 round unanimous decision last October in Chicago, Illinois. In November 2014, Cleverly was beaten by Tony Bellew by a 12 round split decision. Cleverly’s only win in the last two years was against journeyman Tomas Man last year in May 2015.

Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn thinks he can beat Braehmer. I don’t agree at all. Cleverly is a decent fringe level guy, but he doesn’t have enough pop in his punches to beat Braehmer.

By Jeff Aranow: After three years of soft title defenses one after another, WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) appears to be at the end of the line with the news that the World Boxing Association has ordered him to begin negotiations with WBA “Super” light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KOs), according to Fight News. The WBA is looking to reduce the titles they have in each division.

The negotiations between Braehmer and Kovalev have 30 days to be completed before a purse bid.

Nathan Cleverly vs. Juergen Braehmer in the works for September

cleverly6777

By Eric Baldwin: Former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) could be challenging for a world title in September against WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs), according to Dan Rafael. Cleverly, 29, had been the leading option for former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s next fight on July 30 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. There has been too much waiting on the negotiations and Cleverly appears to be moving on inside.

Cleverly, #10 WBC, isn’t the ideal opponent that you want to see fighting for a world title, because he’s lost two out of his last three fight in the last two years. It’s gets worse than that. Cleverly has lost three out of his last six fights.

He’s not exactly world title challenger material compared to some of the other available contenders that Braehmer could be facing Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol or Andrzej Fonfara, fighter that Cleverly just lost to October 2015. However, when you look at the type of fighters that Braehmer has exclusively been facing since he picked up the WBA title in December 2013, Cleverly is the typical opponent.

Big fight time for Braehmer

braehmer5By Gav Duthie: Another night, another routine defence for Jurgen Braehmer now 48-2 (35). Braehmer beat Eduard Gutknecht by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in Germany. At age 37 you need to ask the question what does he want for the rest of his career.

This was the 6th successful defence of his WBA regular title, where Sergiy Kovalev owns the full title. This is the second spell the German has had with this title. It reminds me of the reign of Sven Ottke where he was content to defend his titles at home make decent money against average fighters as opposed to testing himself in major unification bouts, top contenders or big money bouts. If Braehmer does decide to step out of his comfort zone.

Juergen Braehmer defeats Eduard Gutknecht

braehmer6By Jim Dower: Making his sixth defense of his WBA light heavyweight title, Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) easily defeated an over-matched super middleweight contender Eduard Gutknecht (29-4-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in their rematch at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Gutknecht was picked for this fight from the 168lb division rather than the 175lb division.

The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-111 and 118-110. The score of 118-110 was the more accurate one of the three, as it was just a one-sided fight. The 33-year-old Gutknecht looked more like a European level fighter rather than a world class guy.

The 36-year-old Braehmer was able to nail Gutknecht with straight lefts and right hooks all night long. Braehmer also landed a lot of uppercuts. Gutknecht had no defense against Braehmer’s uppercuts in the fight as well as his straight lefts.

Braehmer faces Gutknecht tonight

braehmer336By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs) defends his title tonight against a super middleweight rather than a fighter from the 175lb division when he faces former opponent Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1, 12 KOs) in a rematch at the Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Germany.

It’s fights like this that calls for a boxing commission that will restore order to the sport. Gutknecht, 33, isn’t ranked in the top 15 at light heavyweight division. He was picked out from the super middleweight division for Braehmer to fight.

While it may seem like no issue for the average fan to see fights like this going on, it’s not a great deal if you’re one of the contenders waiting for your title shot against a champion like Braehmer.

The World Boxing Association has sanctioned the fight despite the fact that the 33-year-old Gutknecht isn’t ranked in the top 15 in the 175lb division. Gutknecht is ranked #6 by the WBO in the super middleweight division. Just why Braehmer had to get an opponent from the 168lb division for his next fight is unknown. He’s been doing quite nicely in defending against little known fringe contenders in the 175lb division.
