Cotto vs. Chavez Jr. on December 4th?

Image: Cotto vs. Chavez Jr. on December 4th?By Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news rumors, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) will be facing unbeaten number #1 ranked WBC middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on December 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada. This, of course, would depend on the young 24-year-old Chavez Jr. getting by his next opponent on September 11th, who is rumored to be Pawel Wolak. Both Chavez Jr. and Cotto fight for Bob Arum of Top Rank, so it would be a fight that fits the usual pattern for some of Arum’s fights he likes to put together. Arum has been grooming Chavez Jr. for ages, matching him up and against 2nd and 3rd tier fighters in building up an impressive looking record but one without any real substance.

Chavez Jr. to serve as one of Pacquiao’s sparring partners to prepare for Margarito

Image: Chavez Jr. to serve as one of Pacquiao's sparring partners to prepare for MargaritoBy Chris Williams: Undefeated junior middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be used as one of Manny Pacquiao’s many sparring partners to help him prepare for his November 13th bout against the Mexican Antonio Margarito. Chavez Jr., who fights a lot like Margarito, is someone that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach feels can do a good job mimicking Margarito’s style to help Pacquiao.

Chavez Jr. likely to fight Wolak next rather than Pavlik – News

Image: Chavez Jr. likely to fight Wolak next rather than Pavlik - NewsBy Dan Ambrose: If you were hoping to see Julio Cesar Chavez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) step up several levels and face former World Boxing Council/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) next then you will be sadly disappointed, because the 23-year-old Chavez Jr. is now likely to take on fringe junior middleweight contender Pawel Wolak (27-1, 17 KO’s) rather than Pavlik next. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Chavez’s people didn’t like the idea of him fighting Pavlik at this point in his career. Additionally, there was a conflict for the December 4th date that the Chavez-Pavlik fight was scheduled at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. There will be a football game in the stadium on that date. However, that’s really neither here nor there.

Pavlik vs. Chavez Jr. may not happen now, says Pavlik Sr. – News

By Matt Stein: Mike Pavlik, the father of former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, said in an interview with WFMJ-TV, as reported by Vindy.com, that the fight between Kelly Pavlik and Julio Cesar Chavez wasn’t going to be taking place, because Chavez Jr. feels he’s not ready for the fight at this point. Lee Samuels from Top Rank was contacted about this, and he said “Top Rank hasn’t called anybody. It’s a fight we’ve discussed but that’s it. It’s a fight we’d like to do and we’d like to do it in December.”

By Jim Dower: unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be fighting a tune-up bout on September 11th against a still to be determined opponent in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. Don’t expect much in terms of a competitive match-up for the young 23-year-old son of a legend for this fight, as Chavez Jr. has a big money fight coming up on December 4th against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas.

Will Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. be matched against anyone good in his next fight?

Image: Will Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. be matched against anyone good in his next fight?By Chris Williams: I was somewhat surprised and a little impressed that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) beat John Duddy so easily in his last fight on June 26th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas. But then again, I don’t see Duddy as an A level fighter, so Chavez’s win has to be taken with a grain of salt. But I’m interested to know if Bob Arum, Chavez’s promoter, is finally going to take the training wheels off of him and put him in with a top tier fighter after 42 fights.

How is Arum going to keep Chavez Jr. winning long enough for him to fight Cotto?

Image: How is Arum going to keep Chavez Jr. winning long enough for him to fight Cotto?By Chris Williams: It seems like the general idea is for unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) to be matched up against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto sooner or later in a fight where the inexperienced and largely still unproven against quality upper tier fighter Chavez Jr. will be drilled to pieces in a big money fight. However, that match-up can’t happen until things are settled between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., because Cotto is the backup plan for Arum to be substituted for Mayweather if he doesn’t sign the contract for the Pacquiao fight.

Prediction: Pacquiao’s next three opponents – Cotto, Margarito and Chavez Jr.

Image: Prediction: Pacquiao's next three opponents - Cotto, Margarito and Chavez Jr.By Dave Lahr: This is hilarious. Instead of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr., and giving boxing fans what they want to see, Manny Pacquiao is probably going to be put back in with Miguel Cotto in a fight that few people want to see, aside from Cotto fans. But it doesn’t end there.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has said recently that he’ll try to match Pacquiao up with Mayweather in early 2011. I don’t buy that. The last time I checked, Mayweather is an awesome fighter who is capable of beating Pacquiao and ending the gravy train all at once. Mayweather also doesn’t fight for Top Rank, so the Mayweather-Pacquiao isn’t happening in early 2011.
