Does Chavez Jr. deserve a title shot against Cotto?

By Chris Williams: I’m still trying to figure out what Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) has done to deserve a title shot against World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s). Other than the fact that both Chavez Jr. and Cotto fight for Top Rank and promoter Bob Arum likes to match his fighters up against each other, I don’t see what Chavez has done to get this shot against Cotto. After fighting as a pro for seven years against B level opposition, Chavez, who was already ranked number #1 by the World Boxing Council in the middleweight division, beat fringe middleweight contender John Duddy by a 12 round unanimous decision last June.

Ariza thinks Chavez will be “Too big and too strong” for Cotto on December 4th

By Chris Williams: Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, who works for both Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., thinks that the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. can beat WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto when they fight on December 4th. In an article by Chris Robinson at Examiner.com, Ariza says “Freddie [Roach] already knows how to beat Cotto. It’s really a good fight, especially for a guy like Chavez who is young, and like to challenge himself. I think having an eight week camp instead of four weeks, which is what we had to get ready for [ohn] Duddy, is going to be a big difference. I think the main thing will be that Freddie knows how to beat Cotto and Chavez is going to be too big and too strong.”

Chavez Jr. vs. Cotto: Is Julio going to get destroyed or what?

By Chris Williams: I’ve been curious about the career of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s), and have been wondering when his promoter Bob Arum would finally put him in with a good opponent after seven years of facing exclusively B level fighters. I figured that Arum would at least put Chavez Jr. in with a decent top tier fighter before throwing him to the dogs to be ripped apart. But instead, Arum is going to not take any risks and just throw Chavez Jr. in with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) on December 4th, despite Chavez Jr. having faced no one worth mentioning other than B level fighter John Duddy.

Cotto is popular in the New York and has a large fan base over there. Arum would like to take advantage of that.

Chavez Jr. to train with Pacquiao in the Philippines – News

Image: Chavez Jr. to train with Pacquiao in the Philippines – NewsBy Jim Dower: Undefeated middleweight contender and fellow Tank Rank fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be traveling to the Philippines to train alongside Manny Pacquiao as Manny prepares for his November 13th fight against two-time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito on November 13th, according to the latest boxing news from Philboxing.com. This is a move done for a couple of reasons, one being that Chavez Jr. has a fighting style that is somewhat like Margarito’s style. It’s thought that Pacquiao could benefit from the sparing with the young Chavez Jr. The other reason is that it will give trainer Freddie Roach more time with Chavez so he can continue to make changes to his style.

Chavez Jr. may not fight on September 11th

By Eric Thomas: According to Fightnews.com, unbeaten number #1 rated WBC middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) may choose not to fight on September 11th against Pawel Wolak due to trainer issues that are giving Chavez problems. Although Chavez still may fight on September 11th, it’s still not certain. If not, then Chavez Jr. will instead wait until December 4th for his big money bout against World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto instead.

Arum says Cotto vs. Chavez Jr. will happen – News

Image: Arum says Cotto vs. Chavez Jr. will happen – NewsBy Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is eager to match unbeaten middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) against World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) next on December 4th. In an article at the LA Times, Arum, speaking about the potential fight between the 29-year-old Cotto and the young 24-year-old Chavez, said “That fight will happen, we’re waiting on the terms to be finalized and for the site, but Madison Square Garden is available, that’s great news. It’s a guaranteed sellout at MSG.” Arum is right. A fight between Cotto and Chavez would sell out Madison Square Garden, but then again, a fight between Cotto and pretty much anybody would also likely sell out the Garden.

Arum wants to match Chavez vs. Cotto in December if Julio looks good against Wolak

Image: Arum wants to match Chavez vs. Cotto in December if Julio looks good against WolakBy Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is hoping to match two of his fighters Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. World Boxing Association junior middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto on December 4th in a pay per view bout in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, New Jersey. This fight depends on how well the young 24-year-old Chavez Jr. does in his next fight against fringe junior middleweight contender Pawel Wolak on September 11th. Wolak is the planned next fight for Chavez Jr., although it’s doubtful that Arum would want to risk putting Chavez in with a slugger like Wolak.

Roach says Chavez Jr. would beat Cotto

Image: Roach says Chavez Jr. would beat CottoBy John Martinez, FightChronicles.com, (2010Aug04) “In order to have enough you must have too much.” This statement rings especially true when speaking of boxing trainers; coaches will build their stables with fighters of varying caliber all searching for that one big spotlight. More often than not, the fighter suffers from a teacher with little to no time to hone their individual talents.

As in every case, there are exceptions to the rule. Freddie Roach, boxing trainer extraordinaire, is that exception to this rule. Roach clearly has enough, yet hungers for more. Fresh off the “setback” of failed negotiations between arguably the best undefeated fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the sport’s premier megastar (whom happens to receive his instructions from Roach), boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, Roach is already looking towards his next assignment-Antonio Margarito.
