Chavez vs. Gomez: Will Julio get beaten before he gets his shot against Pacquiao?

By Dan Ambrose: WBC Silver middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) defends his title against welterweight Alfonso Gomez (2-4-2, 11 KO’s) on December 4th at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. Chavez, perhaps to ensure that he doesn’t get beaten, has been matched against a welterweight instead of someone from the middleweight division. Gomez will be coming up in weight two entire divisions to challenge the 24-year-old Chavez Jr. for his obscure title belt, which the WBC created recently for some reason. Chavez Jr. is hoping to get a shot against fellow Top Rank fighter Manny Pacquiao in 2011, which is one of the reasons why Chavez decided not to go to the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao.

Chavez-Gomez: Will Julio get through this fight?

By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) wants to get a big money fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2011. And with both Chavez and Pacquiao sharing the same promoter Bob Arum, Chavez stands a very good chance of getting a crack at the Filipino star, even if it Chavez Jr. doesn’t deserve to fight Pacquiao. However, before Chavez Jr. can face Pacquiao next year, has the not so simple task of having to beat welterweight contender Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s on December 4th in their fight at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. Gomez, 29, is ranked #3 IBF, #5 WBC and #9 WBO in the welterweight rankings.

Chavez Jr. says he could fight Pacquiao in 2011

By Chris Williams: In a bout that would be splendidly awful to watch or even contemplate, middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) revealed that he could be facing Manny Pacquiao in 2011. In an article by Ricardo Lois at Examiner.com, Chavez Jr. gives his reasons why he won’t be traveling to the Philippines to spar with Pacquiao for his fight with Antonio Margarito on November 13th, saying “I’m getting ready for my fight against Alfonso Gomez on December 4th in Anaheim, California. I was supposed to go to the Phi;ippines and do sparring with Pacquiao, which is something very important for me, but at the same time, it has been said that Manny could be my opponent next year. And I think in helping him with sparring would be complicated.”

Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?

Image: Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?By Chris Williams: I know trainer Freddie Roach has personally picked out three of his fighters – Amir Khan, Vanes Martirosyan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – to spar with Manny Pacquiao to get him prepared for Antonio Margarito on November 13th, but is this situation of Pacquiao doing Roach a favor by sparring with these guys rather than Pacquiao getting any real benefit out of it? Let’s be honest here. Chavez, Khan and Martirosyan are nothing like Margarito. I see absolutely nothing in common with them and the Mexican warrior in their style of fighting.

Chavez Jr. vs. Gomez card to go for $44.95 on PPV

By Chris Williams: The December 4th card with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) defending his obscure WBC Silver middleweight title against welterweight Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s) will go for a reported $44.95. The fight will be taking place at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. On the undercard, Nonito Donaire will be facing Wladimir Sidorenko, and WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto will be taking on contender Urbano Antillon, and rounding out the card will be lightweight contender Brandon Rios vs. Noe Bolanos. I know boxing is a subjective thing for fans, but I don’t know that this card is worth me paying $44.95. There needs to be more flexibility when purchasing these expensive PPV cards. Like letting boxing fans have the options of paying to see some of the fights while ignoring others. For example, I’ll pay $4.99 to watch the Chavez-Gomez fight and they can leave off the Rios-Bolanos, Donaire-Sidorenko and Soto-Antillon fights. I’m not interested in those fights.

Chavez Jr. to fight Cotto next if he defeats Gomez on 12/4

By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he’s going to match unbeaten middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) up with World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto next in 2011 if Chavez can beat welterweight Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s) in their fight on December 4th. In an article at the Orange County Register, Arum says “If he [Chavez Jr.] wins this fight, I’m going to put him in against Miguel Cotto. Cotto is a terrific fighter and he won’t be intimidated by Chavez’s name. Is Julio ready for a challenge like that? I don’t know. I think Freddie [Roach] thinks there’s a lot of potential there, and the last fight [Chavez’s 12 round decision win over fringe middleweight contender John Duddy] was definitely a big step.”

Chavez Jr. fighting Gomez to get more recognition

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is being carefully guided to the top by matching him against fighters with a little bit of name recognition by boxing fans, but not against anyone that is truly dangerous and would have a chance to beat him. In his next fight on December 4th, Chavez Jr. will be facing Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s), a former contestant on NBC’s reality television program The Contender six long years ago. Gomez, unlike Chavez, is a welterweight and not a middleweight.
