Pacquiao needs a KO to beat Mayweather, says Marquez

pac773By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao will need a knockout for him to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 2nd, according to Pacquiao’s old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez. For some reason, Marquez doesn’t see Pacquiao as capable of winning a decision in Mayweather’s home city of Las Vegas, and he sees him getting the short end of the stick.

Pacquiao had the judges on his side in his first three fights against Marquez in Las Vegas. It wasn’t until Marquez decided to take the judges out of the picture completely in their fourth fight that he was able to finally get a victory over Pacquiao in 2012.

That was the fight where Marquez trained for a knockout and came in and sparked Pacquiao out cold in the 6th round with a big right hand shot. The punch left Pacquiao face down on canvas out cold.

Khan targeting Bradley, Cotto or Marquez for next fight

khan52By Scott Gilfoid: Now that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) finally realizes that he has no chance of getting a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao next, Khan is now targeting Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto or Tim Bradley for his next fight.

Unfortunately for Khan, his chances of getting any of those guys to fight him are probably about as good as they were for him getting Mayweather or Pacquiao into the ring. Khan is missing one thing that would make him an appealing option for Cotto, Marquez and Bradley, and that’s a world title belt.

Marquez still dealing with knee pain, next fight unknown

marquez44444By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) is still dealing with knee pain from an injured knee that he hurt nine months ago in his fight against Mike Alvarado in May of 2014.

The fact that Marquez’s knee is still bothering him is troubling, because pain lasting that long could be an indication that there may be something going on inside his knee that might need to be addressed surgically. Marquez reportedly will be seeing a doctor about the problem in Mexico.

Hearn working on Kell Brook vs. Juan Manuel Marquez for the summer

marquez45By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs), is looking to put a fight together between Brook and the soon to be 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) for the summer in the UK. However, Marquez is coming off of a knee injury and a long layoff after he hurt his knee in his last fight against Mike Alvarado a year ago in May 2014.

Marquez has been rehabbing the knee, and he’s only now started training again. It’s unclear whether his knee is 100 percent or not. You’d hate to see Marquez take the fight with Brook at less than 100 percent.

Khan: Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Bradley and Marquez are available to fight in May

khan454By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) has widened his net from just focusing on wanting to get big money fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to wanting to get bouts against the likes of Miguel Cotto, Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez or his next available date in May.

Khan is hoping that one of those fighters will agree to face him. By Khan creating a bigger net to catch one of the bigger stars, he hopes to be able to get at least one of them to agree to fight him. But sadly, I can see all five of them passing on the idea of facing the Showtime fighter.

Boxing’s great rivalries, quartets, and trilogies: where have they gone?

jmm_ko_pac - CopyBy Sizzle JKD: The ‘80s is known to be arguably the greatest decade in the sport of boxing. We saw the end of Muhammad Ali’s reign and the rise of Mike Tyson. We witnessed the greatness of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who was 68-0 when the decade ended and went undefeated in 90 fights until finally losing to Frankie Randall in 1994. We saw one of the greatest junior welterweights of all time, Aaron Pryor, who dominated his division from 1980-1985.

Marquez: I won all four fights with Pacquiao – why another fight?

marquez5By Chris Williams: After four fights with Manny Pacquiao, Mexican superstar Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) doesn’t see the point of getting back inside the ring with the 36-year-old Filipino again.

The reason why is because Marquez feels he beat Pacquiao in all four fights, but was robbed in the first three of them before finally making up his mind that he wasn’t going to let the judges play a part in his fourth fight in 2012.

That was when Marquez knocked Pacquiao out cold in the 6th round. That was a vicious knockout that left Pacquiao face down on the canvas for close to two minutes. Pacquiao was revived and thankfully he was okay afterwards. But for Marquez, he feels like he closed out the series with that final knockout, because it was the equivalent of an exclamation point.

Canelo will beat Kirkland, says Marquez

canelo56By Dan Ambrose: Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez is picking former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) to beat James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) in their fight on May 2nd at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Marquez doesn’t give his reasons for believing that the 24-year-old Canelo will beat Kirkland, but it probably has a lot to do with Canelo being the more active fighter, and Kirkland having to lose more than 40+ pounds to make the 155 pound catch-weight on May 2nd.

Marquez could get title shot against Kell Brook in 2015

marquez000000By Dan Ambrose: While former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) hasn’t fought in the past eight months, he could be getting a shot at facing IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) later on this year for Brook’s IBF title if the British fighter gets past his March 28th title defense against his #1 IBF mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan at the Motorpoint Arena, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Marquez’s co-promoter Fernando Beltran says Marquez wants the fight against Brook. It would give the 41-year-old Marquez a chance at winning a 5th division world title, and this is something that he badly wants before he retires.

Rios targeting Marquez and Bradley

rios82By Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) and his trainer Robert Garcia are hoping that his win over Mike Alvarado last Saturday night can be used as a springboard for fights against Juan Manuel Marquez or Tim Bradley in 2015.

Rios looked good in destroying Alvarado in three rounds in a fight that was broadcast by HBO from Broomfield, Colorado. Rios’ trainer Robert Garcia initially mentioned wanting to have him face Victor Ortiz next, but Garcia now doubts whether HBO will ever agree to that fight perhaps due to Ortiz’s run of bad luck in fights against Luis Collazo, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Josesito Lopez and Marcos Maidana in the past.
