Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez on June 15th in Dallas, Texas

garcia22By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his title next month against former two-division world champion Juan “Juanma” Manuel Lopez (33-2, 30 KO’s) on June 15th at the American Airlines Center, in Dallas, Texas, USA.

This is a potentially tough fight for the 25-year-old Garcia because he was kind of exposed in his last fight against Orlando Salido last January in which Garcia had started running out of gas by the 4th round and looked like he wanted out of the fight by the 8th.

Luckily for Garcia, he got his way out of the fight when an accidental headbutt broke his nose. Rather than toughing it out like many fighters do when they suffer a broken nose, Garcia complained that he couldn’t breathe out of his nose, which is a fairly common thing for a fight with a broken nose. That’s just how it is, but the fight was stopped anyway.

Arum to match Donaire against Juan Manuel Lopez next

donaire12352By Chris Williams: Just as I thought; Bob Arum, the promoter for Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s), doesn’t have any plans on matching him against WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) for his next fight to see if Donaire can get revenge for his 12 round unanimous decision loss at the hands of the Cuban from last Saturday night.

Instead, Arum is going to match Donaire against one of his Top Rank stable fighters former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (32-2, 29 KO’s) near the end of the year after Donaire returns from his shoulder surgery.

Arum said to the Manila Standard “[Donaire] really struggled to make weight and I think that took a little zip out of him and this kid Rigondeaux was awfully fast and awfully elusive. [Donaire will] fight Lopez at 126 pounds in Puerto Rico towards the end of the year. [It] depends on the operation.”

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez possible for May 11 or 18th

garcia22By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael is reporting that a fight between WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) and former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (32-2, 29 KO’s) is in the works for May 11th or May 18th on HBO.

There isn’t a venue yet, but it’s possible that the fight could head to Puerto Rico because that’s easily the best play to stage if they want to attract a large gate. Garcia-Lopez won’t likely draw a lot of boxing fans outside of Puerto Rico unless they stage it in New York where Lopez has a lot of fans.

The 25-year-old Garcia’s broken nose has healed from his 8th round technical decision victory over Orlando Salido last January. Garcia had surgery on his nose to straighten it out after Salido knocked it askew in the 8th round by an accidental head-butt.

Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Aldimar Silva Santos on Saturday in Puerto Rico

lopez4334By James Le Blanc: This Saturday, Juan Manuel Lopez has an up-hill battle to begin in a 10 round tune-up fight in trying to restore his image against Aldimar Silva Santo at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. As a very fan friendly fighter, Lopez was making a big name for himself having been featured on the Showtime telecast several times.  Like many other exciting fighters to watch it was his ability to overcome adversity within the ring that made watching him so special. Juanma is a heavy hitter, yet extremely vulnerable at times, and it was this vulnerability that got him Knocked out twice by veteran Orlando Salido.

But after the second KO loss to Salido, Juanma demonstrated one of the most classless post fight interviews of all time, accusing the referee of having a gambling problems insinuating that the fight was stopped because the referee needed to ensure it was stopped.  Of course this accusation surprised everyone because we all saw a guy that was getting pummeled to his defeat and a referee that had no other alternative than to end the fight.

Juan Manuel Lopez – Aldimir Silva Santos on 2/2 in Bayamon Puerto Rico

lopez4534By Jason Kim: 29-year-old former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28 KO’s) will be looking to turn his troubled boxing career around next month on February 2nd against 31-year-old Brazilian super bantamweight Aldimar Silva Santos (18-3, 9 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Puerto Rico.

Lopez hasn’t fought in 11 months since being stopped in the 10th round by Orlando Salido last year in their rematch. After the fight, Lopez had some negative words to say about referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. when interviewed. That led to Lopez receiving a long suspension, but he’s now finally ready to get back in the ring to resume his career.

Juan Manuel Lopez to return to the ring on 2/2 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico

lopez645By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28 KO’s) will be returning to the ring on February 2nd against an opponent still to be determined at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This will be the first fight for the 29-year-old Lopez since he was stopped in the 10th round in his rematch against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido last March.

Lopez was given a suspension after that fight for making negative comments about the referee Roberto Ramirez, who stopped the fight in the 10th round after a badly hurt Lopez was knocked down. Lopez got back up was clearly too hurt to continue and the referee did the wise thing by stopping it rather than letting Salido finish Lopez off.

Lopez will be moving up in weight to the super featherweight division where he hopes to capture another world title, and you have to like his chances of doing that because he matches up really well against the current champions Roman Martinez, Juan Carlos Salgado, Takashi Uchiyama and Gamaliel Diaz.

Lopez, 29, hasn’t fought since being stopped by WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido in a 10th round TKO loss March in Puerto Rico.

Juan Manuel Lopez expected back in December

Image: Juan Manuel Lopez expected back in DecemberBy Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Organization will be lifting their 1 year suspension of Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28 KO’s) a little early to allow the 29-year-old Lopez fight in December instead of when his suspension is supposed to have run out in March of 2013. The WBO also agreed to start ranking Lopez again. This comes after Lopez was given a year suspension for having accused a referee of having a gambling problem following his 10th round TKO loss to WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido last March.

Even with the WBO allowing Lopez to get back in the ring earlier than expected, Lopez still has lost 9 months of his career and you have to wonder whether he’ll ever be the same. He’s already lost two out of his last three fights and not really looked consistently good since 2009. Lopez was almost knocked out by Rogers Mtagwa in October 2009. Lopez was dropped in the 1st round in his next fight by Bernabe Concepcion, and staggered by Rafael Marquez in their fight in November 2010.
