Lara-Martirosyan possible for 5/21, with Jermall Charlo vs. Trout

1(Credit: Josh Jordan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jeff Aranow: An interesting fight card is being planned for May 21 on Showtime Boxing involving three big fights in the 154lb division. IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (23-0, 18 KOs) will be defending his title against #9 IBF Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), WBA World junior middleweight Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) will be facing #4 WBC, #7 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (36-2-1, 21 KOs) in a rematch, and #1 WBC 154lb contender Jermell Charlo (27-0, 12 KOs) will be battling #2 WBC John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) in a fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.

The triple-header, if it takes place, will be staged in Houston, Texas. This will be a great card if it comes off. It’s a good ideal to package the three junior middleweight contests together on the same card because it helps set up fights between them in the future almost in a Super Six tournament type of situation.

Jermell Charlo wants John Jackson in December

10/31/15 - Houston, TX - Jermell CHARLO vs Joachim ALCINE(Credit: Josh Jordan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jim Dower: #1 WBC 154lb contender Jermell Charlo (27-0, 12 KOs) did his job last night in defeating veteran Joachim Alcine (35-8-2, 21 KOs) by a 6th round knockout to remain unbeaten on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC Sports Net from the NRG Arena in Houston, Texas.

The 25-year-old Charlo had too much speed, punching power and talent for the 39-year-old Alcine to deal with in this fight. It’s fortunate for Alcine that he was able to go six rounds, because he was hurt in the 4th from a left hook from Charlo.

Andy Lee: This night will live with me forever

jackson6By Scott Gilfoid: Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KO’s) got a career victory in what could be the last hurrah of his career with his come from behind 5th round knockout win over knockout artist John Jackson (18-2, 15 KO’s) last night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lee had been down once in the fight from a right hook from Jackson, and he was getting a serious beat down from the young 25-year-old talent. But in the 5th round, Jackson launched a long right hand that he didn’t set up with a jab, and this led to Lee countering him with a right hook that knocked him cold. The shot put Jackson down on his face on the canvas and the fight was then stopped.

For Lee, his career, which was limping along before last night, will continue on but his job doesn’t get any easier. Jackson, as talented as he is, isn’t one of the top guys in the junior middleweight division.

Sonsona edges Vazquez Jr; Maciel defeats Melendez; Lee destroys Jackson

jackson10By Jim Dower: #4 WBA, #4 WBC, #5 WBO Marvin Sonsona (19-1-1, 15 KO’s) defeated former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (23-4-1, 19 KO’s) by a 10 round split decision on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. The final judges’ scores were 96-92, 96-92 for Sonsona, and 96-92 for Vazquez Jr. Sonsona knocked Vazquez Jr. down with a left to the body in the 1st round.

Vazquez Jr barely beat the count in getting up at the count of 9. Sonsona held frequently throughout the fight despite being warmed by the referee repeatedly. In the 6th round, Sonsona lost a point for hitting Vazquez Jr. when he had his back turned.

Andy Lee: I’m not overlooking John Jackson; this is a make or break fight for me

By Scott Gilfoid: #6 WBC Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KO’s) will have his back against the wall on Saturday night in his crucial fight against lee534knockout artist John Jackson (18-1, 15 KO’s) in their fight on HBO pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden. The two will be fighting for the vacant NABF light middleweight title, and Lee says that it’s an eliminator bout as well.

The winner of the Jackson-Lee fight will likely need to wait a long, long time before they get a shot at the WBC junior middleweight title because it’s currently held by Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he’s not going to fight either Jackson or Lee. It’s not that he wouldn’t beat them, but rather there’s no money in a fight against them.

Andy Lee faces John Jackson on 6/7 at Madison Square Garden, New York

lee2By Scott Gilfoid: #6 WBC, #10 WBO, #11 WBA, #14 IBF, middleweight contender Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KO’s) will be John Jackson (18-1, 15 KO’s), the son of former middleweight knockout artist Julian Jackson, on June 7th at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. The Lee-Jackson fight will be taking place on the HBO pay-per-view card headlined by WBC 160lb champion Sergio Martinez vs. Miguel Cotto. The Lee-Jackson fight will take place at 154.

It’s unclear where the Lee vs. Jackson fight will be staged on the card, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this winds up as the chief support for the card, because there’s also talk of Yuri Foreman fighting on the card in a fight against Jorge Melendez. It looks like they’re loading up the undercard with guys that are a long shot to become future champions. Foreman already won a title years ago, but it’s highly unlikely that he’ll ever win another one given how strong the 154lb division is now.
