My Two Cents: Guzman, Wilder, Broner, Mayweather retirement

broner6677By Gav Duthie: After being inactive for a little while on the writing front and a lack of top level boxing recently I thought I would give my thoughts on a few of the recent boxing stories in the press.

Joan Guzman retires

The wasted talent of Joan Guzman can only be blamed on one man, himself. The man from the Dominican Republic missed weight several times, failed drug tests and was extremely inactive through his career. Nevertheless I feel a sadness towards any boxer with unfulfilled potential.

Image: Khan rejects Guzman: I want someone more credible than thatBy William Mackay: Despite former two division world champion Joan Guzman (33-0-1, 20 KO’s) sporting an unbeaten record and a high ranking in the light welterweight division, Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says he’s not interested in taking that fight because he doesn’t see Guzman as a viable alternative for his next fight on December 15th.

Khan said to the Manchester Evening News “I want someone who is a bit more credible than him. I’ve come from world title fights and he might be a bit below that…It will either be in England or American, December 15.”

Joan Guzman vs. Amir Khan a possibility in December

Image: Joan Guzman vs. Amir Khan a possibility in DecemberBy William Mackay: Former two division world champion Joan Guzman (33-0-1, 20 KO’s) is reporting that he’s in negotiations for a fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) for a fight that will take place in December if the fight can get made.

Guzman, #2 WBA, #4 IBF, told thaboxingvoice.com “I’m scheduled and in negotiations with Amir Khan.”

This kind of makes sense for Khan, because it’s a virtual minefield in the light welterweight division and unless he faces the right opponent, he could very well get knocked out again. Guzman, a former super bantamweight and super featherweight world champion, is starting to show age and he hasn’t had fought a quality opponent since he beat Ali Funeka in March of 2010.

Ortiz and Peterson fight to a draw: Victor fails again

Image: Ortiz and Peterson fight to a draw: Victor fails againBy Francisco Hernandez: Last night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Victor Ortiz barely escaped a defeat. Ortiz fought Lamont Peterson and the fight ended in a draw. Although Lamont Peterson is a brave fighter he was there to be knocked out by Victor Ortiz. Victor had Lamont hurt but failed to finish him off, instead Ortiz made the mistake of dancing side to side and away from Lamont. Boxing fans were perplexed why Ortiz would dance away from Lamont when Ortiz clearly had Lamont on the brink of a knockout.

The final scores for the fight were 114-114, 116-112 for Funeka, and 114-114. However, many boxing fans felt that Funeka did more than enough to win the fight based on his much better work rate in the 2nd half of the fight.
