Canelo says he’s staying at 154, not moving to 160!

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will be fighting for the third consecutive time at a 155 pound catch-weight when he faces James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Despite this being his third straight fight at what is technically a new 155 pound class that he’s been fighting at, Canelo is saying that he can still 154 and that he doesn’t want to move up in weight to fight at middleweight.

The middleweight division goes from 155 to 160 pounds, so Canelo has been fighting as a middleweight, not as a junior middleweight in his last two fights.

Canelo: I like facing the fighters fans think I won’t fight

canelo565By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) says he likes to face the fighters that boxing fans think he won’t fight. Presumably, this is why he’s fighting the ring rusty James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) next on May 9th, even though this isn’t a fight that fans are pushing Canelo to fight.

The fights that fans are pushing Canelo to fight is against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and WBC 160 pound champion Miguel Cotto. Not too many boxing fans are really care about Canelo’s fight against Kirkland.

De La Hoya: 15,000 tickets sold for Canelo-Kirkland fight in 2 hours after going on sale

canelo333(Photo Credit: HoganPhotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya was bragging earlier on Wednesday about 15,000 tickets being sold for the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) vs. James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) fight after just two hours after the tickets went on sale for their May 9th fight at the Minute Main Park in Houston, Texas.

“In just two hours since they went on sale, 15,000 tickets have been sold for May 9,” Dela Hoya said.

It’s hard to believe that the Canelo vs. Kirkland fight sold 15,000 tickets in just two hours, because it’s not a great fight.

De La Hoya: After Kirkland, we [Canelo] want Cotto and Mayweather

canelo8999By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya has already mapped out his flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight after the James Kirkland fight on May 9th. If Canelo defeats Kirkland, then De La Hoya wants to match Canelo against Miguel Cotto and then Floyd Mayweather Jr.

For a fight between Canelo and Cotto to take place it’s going to require for Canelo to agree to a smaller slice of the pie, because the negotiations stalled recently over the purse split when Cotto and Canelo attempted to put a fight together.

Canelo v Kirkland hit 2 cities in 1 day!

caneloBy Dan Ambrose: Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and 30-year-old James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) will be hitting two cities today as part of a two-city promotional tour in Texas to attract fans into purchasing tickets for their fight on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

The two fighters will visit Houston and San Antonio as part of the two-city tour.

Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for the 24-year-old Canelo, are hoping to sellout the 45,000 seat Minute Maid stadium by May 9th. They’re obviously hoping that enough fans from the local area in Texas will be enough to sellout the stadium.

It doesn’t hurt that some of the tickets will be selling for just $10. Canelo was able to attract over 40,000 fans to come see him fight Austin Trout in April 2013 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Canelo: I will get the victory over Kirkland on May 9th; my fans won’t be disappointed

canelo15By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is confident that his hand will be raised on May 9th at the end of his fight against American James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) in their fight at the Minute Maid Stadium in Houston, Texas. The fight will take place at a catch-weight of 155 pounds.

With boxing fans excited about the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight, few fans are talking about Canelo’s fight against the ring rusty Kirkland.

Part of the reason for that is because Kirkland hasn’t fought since 2013, and he’s been largely forgotten about by a lot of fans. Further, the younger boxing fans have never heard of Kirkland, because it’s been so long since he was really relevant at 154. His inactivity has caused him to be left behind by a lot of fans.

Canelo-Kirkland tickets going for as low as $10

caneloBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya expects that the May 9th fight between his flagship fighter 24-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) to sell a huge amount of tickets in their fight at the Minute Maid Park, in Houston, Texas, USA.

The price of the tickets certainly will help make that a reality, as the lowest cost of the tickets are $10. It goes up from there with the tickets being sold for $350, $150, $100, $50, and $25. In contrast, the minimum price for the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight are going for $1000, and it goes up dramatically from there.

The Canelo-Kirkland tickets will go on sale next week on March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. De La Hoya previously said that he feels that the Canelo-Kirkland fight will sell 60,000 tickets. That obviously won’t be possible given the size dimensions of the Minute Maid Stadium, which seats a little over 40,000.

David Lemieux in play for Canelo-Kirkland undercard on May 9th

lemieux4554By DA: #13 WBA,#2 WBC, and #5 IBF Middleweight contender David Lemieux is reportedly in talks to be apart of the upcoming Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – James Kirkland undercard on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. This report came from LA times reporter Lance Pugmire in an interview with Oscar De la Hoya about 2015 being Boxing’s biggest year and Canelo Alvarez.

If Lemieux does get put as the co-main event that makes the card a lot better especially since it’ll be a championship bout given that Lemieux recently accepted the IBF’s offer in facing Hassan N’Dam for the vacant belt. The belt was held briefly by former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor but due to legal issues Taylor was stripped of his title assuming he won’t be able to make defenses of the belt. Taylor won the belt by defeating Sam Soliman in which he dropped Soliman several times.
