Kirkland, 26, still doesn’t have an opponent for that date, but that really doesn’t matter right now. It’s not going to be anyone great, says Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

Kirkland, 26, has been in prison in Texas for the past year for a weapons violation. At the time that Kirkland was incarcerated last year, Kirkland was considered by many boxing experts as a future world champion.

James Kirkland to be released from prison on September 17th – News

By Matt Stein: Former junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (25-0, 22 KO’s) will be getting released early from prison next month on September 17th instead of the original release date of October 2nd, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. This is going to please a lot of boxing fans of Kirkland, as he was poised for a shot at one of the junior middleweight titles a year ago when he was arrested in Austin, Texas a year ago after a gun was found in his vehicle. Having a gun in his car wouldn’t have been such a big deal had Kirkland not already served time in the past for armed robbery.

Kirkland, a convicted felon, was arrest for possession of a firearm in April 2009, and was later sent to prison. Kirkland, only 26, last fought in March 2009, stopping Joel Julio in the 6th round.

The 25 year old who is on probation for a 2003 armed robbery that cost him 2½ years of his career, was arrested during a traffic stop in his hometown of Austin, Texas, and booked Sunday afternoon. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Russian Matt Korobov (4-0, 4 KOs) will be facing Rodrigo Aguiar (5-4, 3 KOs) in a four round bout, and former Cuban star Erislandy Lara (4-0, 3 KOs) will be fighting Chris Gray (11-7, 1 KOs) in a 4-round bout. Most of these bouts will likely be over by the 1st or 2nd round due to the one-sided nature of them.
