By Scott Gilfoid: James “Chunky” DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs) will be emerging from a long 11 month layoff to defend his IBF super middleweight title title in December against an opponent still to be determined. DeGale wants to fight a unification match against WBC champion David Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs) in 2018 if he’s still the champion by then.

DeGale v Groves begins to marinate, despite surgery on DeGale’s shoulder being announced

Image: DeGale v Groves begins to marinate, despite surgery on DeGale’s shoulder being announced

By Adam Godfrey: That IBF Super-Middleweight Champion James DeGale and newly crowned WBA Super-Middleweight Champion will meet in a rematch is essentially a given, should there be any semblance of intelligent match-making left in the sport; Groves beat DeGale in their 2011 bout by a majority decision. Besting his former Dale Youth Boxing stablemate did nothing to ease the intense rivalry between the two men, such was the narrow nature of Groves’ victory.

James DeGale to have shoulder surgery

Image: James DeGale to have shoulder surgery

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale will be undergoing shoulder surgery on a problem that he’s had since before his recent 12 round draw against Badou Jack last January. It’s unclear why the 31-year old DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs) waited this long to have the surgery performed, as he probably should have made the move to have the surgery five months ago in January or February instead of waiting outside of the ring for 5 months to have the surgery performed now.

Image: Groves wants DeGale rematch after Chudinov fight

By Scott Gilfoid: George Groves (25-3, 18 KOs) is REALLY looking past his next fight against the hard hitting Fedor Chudinov (14-1, 10 KOs) towards a rematch with James DeGale that he wants to make happen. Groves and Chudinov will be fighting this month for the vacant WBA Super World super middleweight title on May 27 on the undercard of the Kell Brook vs. Errol Spence Jr. card at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England. Groves-Chudinov is the co-feature bout on the card, which will be televised by Sky Sports in the UK.

DeGale wants Golovkin, Ward or Groves in June

Image: DeGale wants Golovkin, Ward or Groves in June

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs) is looking for a big fight in his next bout in June, as he wants to face Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, Andre Ward or George Groves. DeGale, 31, is also interested in facing unbeaten Callum Smith. DeGale is reportedly close to a deal on fighting one of those guys. It would be interesting to know which one it’ll be for DeGale. My guess is Groves. DeGale lost a close 12 round decision to Groves in 2011, and he’s been wanting to avenge that title for a long time.

By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Eubank Sr. says that negotiations with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler will be starting in 1 ½ weeks for a fight between him and Chris Eubank Jr. Eubank Sr. seems to feel pretty confident that he’ll be able to line up either Golovkin or IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale as an opponent for Eubank Jr. after his recent 10th round knockout win over IBO 168lb champion Renold Quinlan last Saturday night at the Olympia in London, England.

Eubank Jr. was able to use his high volume punch attack to force a stoppage in the 10th when referee Howard John Foster stopped the fight. Eubank Jr. didn’t show much in the way of punching power.

Eubank Jr. wants DeGale or Golovkin next

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Newly crowned IBO super middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr. (24-1, 189 KOs) did his part in stopping little known IBO 168lb champion Renold Quinlan (11-2, 7 KOs) by a 10th round knockout on Saturday night, and now he wants to fight IBF 168lb champion James DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs).

Eubank Jr. will be fighting next in April, which is a very quick turnaround. It’s doubtful that DeGale is going to want to get back inside the ring in two months from now to fight Eubank Jr.

By Scott Gilfoid: Badou Jack (20-1-3, 12 KOs) has official vacated his WBC super middleweight title, according to the World Boxing Council. This move was not unexpected, as Jack, 32, had said that he planned on vacating the title last Saturday night after his 12 round draw against IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jack wants to move up to light heavyweight title challenge the top fighters in that weight class. Jack’s promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. has immediate plans to have him fight WBC 175lb champion Adonis Stevenson in June.

Badou Jack: DeGale is too small to go to 175

Image: Badou Jack: DeGale is too small to go to 175

By Scott Gilfoid: As far as Badou Jack is concerned, he whipped IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale last Saturday night, and there’s no point in them fighting a rematch. The judged that were assigned to the DeGale-Jack fight scored it a 12 round draw last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jack, 33, finished the fight looking like the winner with him dropping DeGale in round 12, knocking out some of his front teeth, and busting his eardrum. It was a methodical beating that Jack inflicted on the 30-year-old DeGale.

By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Eubank Jr. says he’s coming for the rest of IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale’s teeth after he gets done with International Boxing Organization 168lb champion Renold Quinlan (11-1, 7 KOs) in their fight next month on February 4 at the Olympia in London, England.

DeGale (23-1-1, 14 KOs) had some teeth knocked out by WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (20-1-3, 12 KOs) in their 12 round draw last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
