Jacobs Defeats Smith, Looks Poor

jacobs4324443By Jason Kim: Middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (18-0, 15 KO’s) defeated former star of The Contender reality boxing series Ishe Smith (21-4, 9 KO’s) tonight by a very questionable 10-round unanimous decision at the Toyota, Center, in Houston, Texas. The final judges’ scores were 96-93, 100-89 and 96-93. I personally had Smith winning the bout by two rounds based on his much better accuracy with his punches and his better overall boxing skills.

Ishe Smith Defeats Pawel Wolak

smith5456.jpgBy Chris Williams: Former contestant from the The Contender boxing reality television series light middleweight Ishe Smith (20-3, 9 KOs) easily defeated previously undefeated Pawel Wolak (21-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Aviator Sports Arena, in Brooklyn, New York. The final judges’ scores were 97-93, 96-94 and 96-94. Smith, 30, dominated every round of the fight over the slow, offensively limited Wolak beating him as if he were a sparring partner. Wolak, originally from Poland, spent most of the fight pressuring Smith ineffectively on the inside, throwing weak shots with little speed.

He was often easily countered by the much quicker Smith, who had no problems landing punches on the wide open Wolak again and again. The judges seemed to be more than a little kind to Wolak, giving him rounds when he looked to have come close to winning none of them from what I saw of the fight. The only real suspense in the fight was whether or not Smith would tire himself out punching Wolak in the head, for he did it an awful lot in the fight without having to worry about any return fire from the weak-punching Wolak. Going into the fight, one would have thought that this should have been a competitive fight, but the real tip off should have been Wolak’s record, which showed that he had fought pretty much low quality fighters for his entire four year career. In reality, Wolak came into the fight with no real top flight opposition on his record, and hence his fight with Smith had mismatch written all over it from the very start of the fight.

Julio Decisions Smith

julio5643.jpgBy Eric Thomas: In a close fight, Colombian light middleweight contender Joel Julio (33-1, 30 KOs) pounded out a close 10-round unanimous decision over star from The Contender reality television series Ishe Smith (19-3, 9 KOs) on Wednesday night at the River Rock Casino, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Julio, 23, was coming off of five consecutive wins after experiencing a shocking 12-round unanimous decision to Carlos Quintana in June 2006, started off strong against Smith, but then seemed to fade in the last five rounds of the fight as the defensive wizard Smith began bringing the fight to Julio.

Though the judges scored it 96-94, 97-93 and 96-93 all for Julio, the fight looked much closer to a draw then having an outright winner between the two. Indeed, Smith, 29, appeared to be the better overall fighter, as he applied a lot of pressure against Julio in the second half of the fight, while making him miss many of his own shots. In Julio’s case, he looked uncomfortable with all the pressure that Smith was putting on him, and seemed to be out of his realm having someone back him up for a change.
