Darchinyan ready to face Donaire on April 13th if Rigondeaux doesn’t

darch2By Dan Ambrose: 37-year-old Vic Darchinyan (38-5-1, 27 KO’s) is ready and willing to step in for WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux to face Top Rank fighter WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) on April 13th at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

According to Steve Kim, Rigondeaux has been offered $750,000 to face Donaire on April 13th, but there appears to be some problems that are keeping the fight from getting made. Its likely Donaire and his promoter Bob Arum will quickly move on and face Darchinyan instead on that date.

Abner Mares moving to featherweight, interested in Rigondeaux fight

mares43By Chris Williams: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) has decided to move up to featherweight to go after a third division world title, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Mares was trying to get a unification bout with WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, but his promoter at Top Rank Bob Arum turned down a $3 million offer for the fight.

Rather than hang around at super bantamweight and be forced to defend his title against his World Boxing Council 122 lb. mandatory challenger Victor Terrazaz in a fight that would have made Mares very little money, he’s decided to move up to 126 to look to get some bigger fights.

Arum to reveal Donaire’s April 13th opponent by the end of the week

donaire2323By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum reportedly will be revealing who his fighter WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire will be facing on April 13th by the end of this week. There’s talk that Arum will be finally giving WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux a chance at fighting Donaire by letting him have the shot rather than the 37-year-old Vic Darchinyan.

As for the Donaire vs. WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares fight negotiations that have been talked about, Arum says that fight can’t happen because the contract Golden Boy Promotions sent over has a number of items that Arum isn’t happy with. According to the Manila Standard, Arum isn’t happy with the date that Golden Boy wants for the fight.

Donaire vs. Rigondeaux on April 13th

rigondeaux7By Chris Williams: It looks like WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) will be facing fellow Top Rank promoted WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) on April 13th. Thesweetscience.com is reporting that a source has informed them that Rigondeaux “has agreed to terms” for a fight with Donaire for April 13th.

All I can say to this is Bob Arum, the promoter for both Donaire and Rigondeaux, sure didn’t wait very long to make the Donaire-Rigondeaux fight after rejecting the $3 million offer from Golden Boy Promotions for a fight between Mares and Donaire. Why would Arum move on so quickly after receiving such a huge offer? It doesn’t make sense. It makes you think that this is the fight that Arum wanted all along – Donaire vs. Rigondeaux.

The Case for Guillermo Rigondeaux

rigondeaux6By Ryan Wardle: Current WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) was rumored to have had talks to schedule a fight with recently crowned 2012 Fighter of the Year, and current WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s).

However, over the past few days Golden Boy Promotions has claimed to have made a $3 million dollar offer to Donaire and Top Rank to schedule a fight with current WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s). Many boxing fans view this as too good to be true, as Top Rank and Golden Boy rarely do business together. Fans consider a possible match up between Rigondeaux and Donaire as not only a potentially exciting unification bout, but also as the easier fight to make.

Rigondeaux to lose out if Donaire faces Mares next

rigondeaux4By Chris Williams: It’s looking more and more like WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) will get passed over by WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) if his promoter Bob Arum accepts the $3 million offer made to him by Golden Boy Promotions.

There’s no question that Donaire will take the Mares fight if Arum gives him the green light on the deal instead of facing the dangerous Rigondeaux. This wouldn’t be such a big deal if Rigondeaux was going to get a guaranteed shot at Donaire after the Mares fight, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Frampton: I’ll be ready for Donaire and Rigondeaux in 2014

frampton3By Scott Gilfoid: 25-year-old Carl Frampton (15-0, 10 KO’s) figures all he needs is one more year and he’ll be ready to take on WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire and WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux for their titles. I’m not sure what precisely will change in a years’ time for the 5’5” Frampton but he seems to believe he’s going to be good enough to compete with them at that time.

Frampton said to the Sportsmole.co.uk “I’m about a year away from challenging one of those guys [Rigondeaux and Donaire], but anyone else I can take on straight away.”

I think it would be scary to imagine Frampton wondering into the ring with either Rigondeaux or Donaire. Heck, I think Abner Mares, Vic Darchinyan, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Ricardo Cardoba, and Victor Terrazaz would all do a number on Frampton.

Donaire will have to prove himself against Rigondeaux

donaire2By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire received 2012 Fighter of the Year from a number of boxing news organization for his wins over a handful of older, little known and recently knocked out fighters.

Donaire is now finally on the verge of facing his first real quality in ages in his upcoming April 27th fight against WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 27th on HBO. Nothing has been confirmed yet about the fight, but it’s like a sold for April 27th.

The only way the fight doesn’t happen now is if Bob Arum of Top Rank can work a deal with Golden Boy Promotions for Donaire to fight WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares in April. That’s just not going to happen.

Arum wants Donaire-Rigondeaux by end of April

donaire23By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank wants to match his two stable fighters WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) and Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) together by the end of April this year. This would come right before Donaire’s time off from boxing for the summer. Donaire’s wife is pregnant and he wants to spend time with her.

Arum said to boxingtalk.com “Before the end of Aril, it will be either Guillermo Rigondeaux, probably Rigondeaux unless something could get done with Abner Mares.”

Donaire’s wife is pregnant; Arum wants him to fight in April

donaire2By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire’s wife, Rachel, is reportedly pregnant, and Donaire is saying on his Facebook page that he wants to be with her during this time and he plan on fighting from June through August. Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum is hoping to get Donaire back in the ring in April against fellow Top Rank fighter WBA 122 pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, according to Philboxing.com.

A fight between Donaire and Rigondeaux makes the most sense right now because Rigondeaux is an easy fight to be made due to the both guys fighting for the same promotional stable, and Rigondeaux has a title and he’s not over-the-hill or considered a paper champion. Rigondeaux is still relatively young, and he’s fighting on a high level right now.
