Mayweather would give Golovkin problems, says Robert G

Floyd Mayweather WinsBy Dan Ambrose: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. makes a comeback at some point in the future one of the best possible fights for him would be against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Mayweather has exhausted his other potential big money fights by beating Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Fighting rematches against them would be pointless and a total waste of time, because it wouldn’t be breaking new ground and boxing fans would see it as a money grab for Mayweather and save their money by not buying it. A fight against Golovkin though would be a match that fans would pay to see because there would be a very real chance that Mayweather would lose the fight and lose by a knockout.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Tureano Johnson possible for April 23rd

1-JohnsonOKane_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2n Promotions is looking to potentially setup a fight between Golovkin and his #1 IBF mandatory challenger Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs) for April 23rd at Madison Square Garden in New York, if they fail to get a unification fight against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) next.

That’s the fight that Golovkin and Loeffler want most of all right now for their next bout, but it’s doubtful that they’ll be able to get the fight. Loeffler made an offer to Saunders for a unification match, and they’re waiting to fight out if Saunders and his promoter Frank Warren will agree to the offer.

What’s next for Gennady Golovkin?

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Jonathan Gonzalez: Following a pretty good year in 2015, the “God of War” GGG is on the lookout for a potential opponent to start off his 2016 campaign. After unifying the IBF and WBA titles in his last fight against Lemieux, there’s going to be a demand for an opponent of a higher caliber. The goal is to always keep moving forward and maintain the reputation he’s built as the boogey-man of the middle weight division and critics are always so hard to please.

There have been a few names slung around in the past few weeks, but nothing solid. There aren’t too many names in the division that create the kind of spark that comes from a super fight matchup. A showdown with WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez looks to be made in the latter half of 2016 if the stars align perfectly for both warriors, which is why the selection of an interim opponent is important to keep momentum going for Golovkin.

Golovkin waiting on response to offer to Saunders

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos2By Scott Gilfoid:
IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is currently waiting for an official response from WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders’ management for an offer they made to Saunders for a fight that they would like to take place in April.

The rumor is that Saunders was offered $4 million for the fight, which is not quite the amount that he wanted. Saunders says he 4 million pounds to fight Golovkin. That’s over $6 million in U.S money.

“Looks like April. We’re waiting on the response to an offer to Saunders for a unification fight,” Loeffler said to RingTV.com. “We won’t know until we receive the response to our proposal.”

Saunders and his promoter Frank Warren gave an interview yesterday in saying that they’ll be meeting in this week or next week to discuss which direction they want to go in. They had a lot to say, and it didn’t seem like they were leaning in the direction of taking the Golovkin fight.

Saunders’ promoter talks Golovkin fight

saunders56By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren says that he, Saunders and their team and are going to be sitting down in the first two weeks of January to decide which direction they want to go in for Saunders’ next fight, which Warren would like to take place in March or April. He wants Saunders to fight three times in 2016, ideally.

A unification fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is a possibility, says Warren, but it’s going to have to be the fight they all decide on. It has to be the fight at the right moment in terms of maximizing the money available, and in terms of Saunders’ development as a fighter.

Golovkin wasting time trying to get Saunders fight

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos1By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I hate to say I told you so but I predicted that IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin would wind up spinning his wheels in looking to get a unification fight against Billy Joe Saunders for early this year. After a report from last week that Golovkin’s management had given Saunders a “firm” offer that was being considered, we’re now hearing that Golovkin’s management are starting to feel that Saunders isn’t serious about wanting the fight.

Saunders is on vacation now, and it’s unclear when he’s going to be coming back. He got a nice payday last November from his win over WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee, so he’s in no hurry to come off of vacation to consider a fight against Golovkin.

Has Golovkin replaced Mayweather as Boxing’s most popular star?

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: It has been four months since Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. wrapped up his career with a boring 12 round decision over a hopelessly over-matched and underwhelming Andre Berto, and it appears that Mayweather is not missed too much by boxing fans.

Mayweather’s spot as the sport’s biggest star appear to have been filled quite nicely by IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs), the unbeaten Kazakhstan knockout artist with 21 consecutive KOs on his resume.

Mayweather: Ward shouldn’t fight Kovalev; he should face Golovkin

floyd3By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks that people in boxing want to see former WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) get beaten for some reason. Mayweather doesn’t like the idea of Ward moving up to the 175lb division to take on IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. Mayweather had a chance to fight Golovkin before retiring from the sport, but he chose to take the easy way out by not taking the fight and instead facing Andre Berto, which a horrible choice of an opponent. Golovkin was going to move down to 154 to face Mayweather.

Some boxing fans might see Mayweather’s comments about Golovkin and see them as jealousy because of all the praise that he’s getting for his fights. Mayweather took a lot of heat from fans for the way he boring fights against Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto before retiring. Mayweather played it safe in both of those fights, including in his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Golovkin wants Saunders in April and Canelo in September

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is letting it be known that he wants to pick up a couple of highly valued pelts to add to his collection in 2016. Golovkin wants the scalps from WBO 160lb champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in April 2016, and WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in September in the same year.

Billy Joe Saunders considering Genndy Golovkin unification fight

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos2By Scott Gilfoid: After previously saying that he wouldn’t be fighting the talented IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) for another 18 months, newly crowned WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) is now considering facing Golovkin in a unification fight.

Saunders’ management reported received a “firm” offer from Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions for a fight between them, according to Sky Sports. Saunders, 26, is leaving it up to his management to make the decision whether to take the fight or not. Saunders recently said he would agree to fight Golovkin next if he got a payday of $5 million.

That is quite a bit of money, and it is hard to imagine Saunders getting even half of that amount in a fight against Golovkin. IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux received $2 million for his recent fight against Golovkin last October for their fight on HBO pay-per-view.

Lemieux is arguably a better-known fighter in the United States than Saunders because Lemieux lives in nearby Canada and he’s had some of his previous fights televised in the U.S.
