Title defenses/One Champ/Some fights need to build

Gennady Golovkin vs David LemieuxBy Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: There have been many who have spoken out against the many belts that are floating around in boxing. Many have called for the elimination of the “super” champions in order to determine one champ per division. Many fans don’t know who is the “true” champion is within the division.

The Ring Magazine has issued their belt to let the fans know who is “the guy to beat” per division. For example, in the eyes of the public WBA/IBF/interim WBC champ Gennady Golovkin is the guy to beat in the middleweight division. What can happen in calling for one champ per division is that people will start to complain about the guy who is holding all the belts.

Roach: Canelo will be bigger and stronger than Golovkin in the ring

1-Alvarez-Cotto (2)By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach suspects that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will be bigger and stronger than IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) when/if the two fighters face each other in 2016.

Roach doesn’t think that Canelo will be necessarily the bigger puncher than Golovkin, but he does think he’ll be stronger than him and heavier as well. Roach doesn’t know how Golovkin will respond with being in the ring with a fighter heavier than him in Canelo, because it’s potentially going to be a different sitiation than he’s become accustomed to.

Golovkin moving on from Billy Joe Saunders

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler has had zero luck in attempting to setup a fight between Golovkin and WBO 160lb champion Billy Joe Saunders for his next fight in 2016. Loeffler and Golovkin are reportedly giving up on the idea of facing Saunders in a unification match.

Instead, they will be looking at other options for Golovkin’s next contest this year. At the moment, IBF mandatory contender Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs) is in the spotlight as the next potential opponent for the hard hitting 33-year-old Golovkin to fight.

Trout – Erislandy Lara has been calling Golovkin out for a year now

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout says that he and Erislandy Lara are both interested in fighting IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but that he’s not looking to fight either of them.

Trout believes that Golovkin has been getting matched up against fighters that are perfect for his fighting style. In other words, Golovkin has been fighting guys that stand directly in front of him so that he can get his shots off. The only fighter that had speed that he faces was Willie Monroe Jr., who didn’t have the punching power to keep him from overwhelming him, says Trout.

De La Hoya wants 90/10 split for Canelo-Golovkin fight

delahoya1By Dan Ambrose: In a huge sign that we might not be seeing a unification fight this year in between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and WBC belt holder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo, says that negotiations would start with Canelo getting a 90-10 money split for a fight against Golovkin if he gets his way.

De La Hoya sees the 25-year-old Canelo as the bigger name than Golovkin and the main draw for a pay-per-view fight on HBO. Because of that, De La Hoya justifies the 90-10 money split, which would be hugely tilted in Canelo’s favor.

Thoughts on Canelo v GGG in 2016

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Al Classico: A few weeks into 2016 and the talk is heating up about a potential clash between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking place sometime towards the end of the year, most likely around September or so. Hopefully the public demand for this fight will ensure that it happens sooner rather than later and we get to see this mega fight within the year, rather than within the next 5 years as was the case with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Manny Pacquiao showdown.

With Canelo being the paper champion at middleweight but having never fought at the full 160 weight limit, the time has come for him  to start answering some real questions; whether he is the real deal or simply a pretender to the throne. He does have legitimate talent with some fantastic skills and has shown a willingness to fight anyone, however, this has recently been overshadowed by the abuse of his star power in ensuring that circumstances and decisions always go his way.

Golovkin already favored to beat Canelo!

alvarez454By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) did a great job of beating the smaller Miguel Cotto last November to take his WBC middleweight title in their fight on HBO PPV. However, Canelo apparently didn’t do a good enough job to impress the some of the oddsmakers, who already have IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) as the favorite to defeat the young 25-year-old Canelo later this year when/if they face each other in a unification fight in September 2016.

The betting site Bovada has Golovkin as the favorite to give Canelo another loss.

This is the line:

Golovkin -350
Alvarez +265

One problem that may be keeping Canelo from being the favorite against Golovkin is that he’s had too many close fights in the last couple of years.

WBC president says Canelo-Golovkin is 50-50 fight

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes that the unification fight between Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will go ahead between September and November this year without any snags that could potentially hold it up and keep it from taking place.

Sulaiman isn’t ready to pick a favorite in the fight right now, as he believes it’s a true 50-50 fight. This might be a surprise to some boxing fans, because many believe that Sulaiman likes the 25-year-old Canelo a great deal and wouldn’t like to see him get brutally knocked out by the older Golovkin in this fight. Canelo means a lot to Mexican boxing and it would be a huge blow if he were to suffer a bad KO loss to Golovkin in this fight.

Golovkin vs. Canelo: Who has the edge?

canelo5(Photo credit: Alma Ontiel – World Boxing Council & Eztel Espinoza – Golden Boy Promotions) By Gerardo Granados: Once upon a time, I saw a young fighter on the undercard of a TV broadcast in Mexico. The kid was still boxing skills raw but, you could see his huge potential, after all, he was only 18 years old. As time passed, the red headed prospect solidified as a contender and got a lucrative contract with Golden Boy Promotions, but for me he has never really achieved what I expected from him.

Years back, I wrote about him praising him, but that was before he went to Golden Boy Oscar De la Hoya. After a year or so, the then contender stopped his development, and started to be maneuvered towards the WBC super-welter title. Instead of facing top super welter contenders, he was spoon fed one opponent after another and finally, got a chance to fight for a vacant strap against Mathew Hatton, who wasn’t even ranked at that weight.

I remember that once, Televisa sports organized a round table to talk about boxing, and Juan Manuel Marquez and trainer Ignacio Beristain criticize Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for being given an easy route to the title.

Well, I believe that the young Alvarez might have been rushed to the title, and they might have decided to avoid dangerous contenders due his inexperience, but still it was not an excuse for me, so I started to lose interest in him.

Golovkin to Canelo: Let’s do this; why wait?

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) does not seem to be too patient about waiting for his unification fight against Golden Boy Promotions flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs). Golovkin wants the fight with Canelo right now rather than waiting for it to take place later this year in September.

Unfortunately, for Golovkin and the boxing world, he is going to need to wait until later this year before he’ll have the chance for his promoters at K2 Promotions to sit down with Golden Boy Promotions to try and put together a fight between him and Canelo.
