Golovkin: I chose Dominic Wade because he’s my IBF mandatory

golovkin2By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) has a simple reason why he’s fighting unbeaten and totally untested #3 IBF Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) on April 23 rather than fighting someone better known. Golovkin points out that Wade is unbeaten and is his #1 IBF mandatory challenger. That appears to be the only reason why he was selected.

Those are reasons enough to fight the 25-year-old American. If Golovkin were to steer around the Wade fight, he would need a very good reason to present to the International Boxing Federation.

Khan: Canelo better not be looking towards Golovkin fight

khan200By Tim Fletcher: Amir Khan says it would be a big mistake if WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is looking past him towards a bigger fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September. Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) and Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will be meeting up in three months from now on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo is supposed to be using the Khan fight as an interim title defense before facing his mandatory challenger Golovkin in September. That’s what the WBC has given Canelo permission to do. Whether Canelo will actually take the fight against Golovkin is another situation altogether.

Khan might not need to worry about Canelo looking past him towards the Golovkin fight, because the chances are that Canelo doesn’t have intention of taking on the tough Kazakhstan fighter anyway.

Virgil Hunter: Golovkin can’t afford to fight Andre Ward right now

hunter5By Allan Fox: Trainer Virgil Hunter thinks that IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin cannot afford to fight his fighter former WBA super middleweight champion Andre “SOG” Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) right now because Ward has a fighting style that is just all wrong for the 33-year-old Golovkin.

Hunter notes that Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions has done a good job of building him up with the right fights, and he feels they have shown a good business model with how they’ve handled him.

However, if they make the mistake in putting Golovkin in with Ward, it would be bad for Golovkin because of the things that Ward can do. Golovkin is there to be hit against any top fighter, and Ward would take advantage of that.

Golovkin’s trainer: Canelo will be too strong for Khan late in fight

sanchezBy Jeff Aranow: Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez expects Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) to have his moments early in his fight against the heavier Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), but ultimately, Sanchez sees Canelo using his size, power and will to get the better of Khan to win the fight.

Sanchez sees it as an interesting fight and he likes the match-up, especially for Canelo. Khan is a bigger name for Canelo than the other guys that his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions were looking at getting for the fight. Golden Boy were thinking of matching Canelo against Gabriel Rosado and Willie Monroe Jr.

Those guys wouldn’t have worked out if they had been selected. Sanchez thinks that Canelo lacked a big enough name on his own to carry the pay-per-view card on HBO.

Golovkin’s promoter: We chose Wade because other champions wouldn’t take fight

Image: Golovkin’s promoter: We chose Wade because other champions wouldn’t take fightBy Jeff Aranow: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) will be making a less than exciting title defense on April 23 against his IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) on HBO Championship Boxing from the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says the reason they selected Wade was because they couldn’t get any of the world champions at 1160 to take the fight with Golovkin. Wade, 25, was the fall back plan after they struck out in getting the other belt holders at middleweight to face GGG.

Joe Cortez thinks Canelo should fight Golovkin in 2017

Image: Joe Cortez thinks Canelo should fight Golovkin in 2017(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: Former referee Joe Cortez doesn’t think that it’s a good time right now for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) to face unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) this year. Cortez sees Golovkin as a dangerous fight for the 25-year-old Canelo, and he thinks it would be better for the Mexican fighter to wait until 2017 before thinking of sharing the ring with the soon to be 34-year-old Golovkin.

Cortez thinks that Canelo has a lot of options available to him to make millions right now, and a fight against Golovkin would be just too risky to take right now. In other words, Canelo should duck Golovkin and take easier options is what Cortez seems to be saying.

Canelo has a fight against welterweight Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view. With Canelo fighting welterweights like Khan and fighting at a catch-weight at 155, it makes him look like he’s someone who is taking the easy path with his career. If Canelo loses to Khan, it’s going to ruin any chances of a fight between Canelo and Golovkin in the future.

Loeffler wants Golovkin vs. Jacobs fight

Image: Loeffler wants Golovkin vs. Jacobs fightBy Dan Ambrose: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is interested in matching his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) up with WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) in the near future.

Jacobs, 28, is coming off of a career best win in stopping former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin in the 1st round last December in the “Battle of Brooklyn” at the Barclays Center in New York. Earlier this week, Loeffler negotiated a fight between Golovkin and #3 IBF contender Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs).

Khan not sure if he wants Golovkin if he defeats Canelo

khan56By Scott Gilfoid: Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) isn’t too sure whether he should keep going at middleweight if he defeats WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 in their catch-weight fight at 155lbs. If Khan defeats Canelo, he would be forced to defend his WBC middleweight title in his next fight against WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

While Khan is good with fighting the “flat-footed” Canelo, as he describes him, he does not seem too eager to step inside the ring and face Golovkin in what could be his next fight. In other words, there are limits to how far Khan wants to go in the middleweight division.

Fighting a flawed, slow-footed Canelo is something that Khan is not that worried about. But fighting a guy with one punch-power like Golovkin, that seems to be a step too far for Khan.

Loeffler: Canelo-Khan winner has 15 days to agree to Golovkin fight or they’ll get strippped

Image: Loeffler: Canelo-Khan winner has 15 days to agree to Golovkin fight or they’ll get stripppedBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says the winner of the May 7 fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) will have 15 days to decide whether they’ll defend the WBC 160lb title against Golovkin next.

If they choose not to face him, then they’ll be stripped of the title by the World Boxing Council for failing to face Golovkin, the mandatory challenger. According to Loeffler, they have it in writing that the winner of the Canelo-Khan fight must make a decision whether to face GGG.
