Malignaggi: Dominic Wade must be focused against Golovkin

1-golovkin-wade (10)By Dan Ambrose: Former two belt world champion Paulie Malignaggi believes that unbeaten challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) is going to need to be totally focused for the full 12 rounds of the fight next month against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in their fight on HBO Championship Boxing from the Forum, in Inglewood, California.

Malignaggi sees Golovkin’s constant pressure as something that would drive a fighter crazy to be on the receiving end of that experience for a full 12 rounds, because it forces that fighter to be focused constantly without let up. There’s nonstop danger in a fight against Golovkin because he’s always there directly in front of his opponents looking to take their heads off with each shot he throws.

De La Hoya: Golovkin is not a star like Canelo

delahoya433By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says the fight between his fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will eventually take place “sooner rather than later,” but he sees the negotiations between the two fighters troublesome.

The reason for that is because he feels that Canelo is a true superstar right now and Golovkin is someone who merely thinks he’s a superstar. De La Hoya thinks Golovkin’s mistaken belief about himself being a superstar will make the negotiations difficult between them. De La Hoya does believe that Golovkin might eventually become a superstar one of these days, but for right now, he’s not there yet.

Canelo: No concessions for GGG; I’m not a middleweight

Image: Canelo: No concessions for GGG; I'm not a middleweight(Photo Credit: Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Jeff Aranow: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made it clear on Tuesday that if a fight between him and IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is going to take place in the future, then it’s going to take place without him giving any concessions to him. Canelo says he himself is not a middleweight, and he doesn’t know when a fight between the two of them will take place.

Canelo does say the fight with Golovkin will happen, but it will be under his conditions. This suggests that if Golovkin wants the fight with Canelo, then he’s going to need to be prepared to boil down to 155lbs to make it happen.

Khan still undecided if he’ll face Golovkin if he beats Canelo

Image: Khan still undecided if he’ll face Golovkin if he beats Canelo(Photo Credit: Martin McNeil – Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is still not sure whether he should defend the WBC middleweight title if he beats WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 155lbs two months from now on May 7. Khan says he’s entirely focused on the Canelo fight right now, but he plans on meeting with his team to make a decision whether to face Golovkin if he beats Canelo.

That would be a very big step for Khan to take the fight against Golovkin. It would be a major victory for Khan to get past Canelo, but then to take an arguably bigger risk by facing Golovkin, it might be a little too much for Khan.

“I’m not looking past this fight to be honest with you,” Khan said to IFL TV. “I like Triple G. I think he’s a great fighter. If I win this fight and I get told to fight Triple G, I’ll have to sit down with my team and decide what happens. For the moment, we are not focusing on anything. We are not looking at that [Golovkin]. We are focusing on Alvarez. This is going to be a very, very hard fight. This is where I belong. It’s not going to be an easy night for me. I can’t lose focus for one second. If I lose focus for one second, I can get hurt badly,” Khan said.

Golovkin-Wade fight less than two months away

1-golovkin-wade (11)By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) vs. Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) is less than two months away for their April 23 fight on HBO Championship Boxing from the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin is trying to stay focused on his training and not get distracted by the fights going around him, as well as his hoped for clash later this year in September against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Mayweather: How much longer before he un-retires?

floyd111By Allan Fox: Judging by some of the comments Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) has made recently about Gennady Golovkin, Amir Khan and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, I think it’s only a matter of time before he comes out of retirement to try and keep himself in the limelight. Mayweather says he has no desire to return to the ring, but his recent remarks say otherwise.

Mayweather said this past week that he would beat Golovkin if he fought him. Here’s specifically what Mayweather said to Fighthype.com”

“Once I fought and beat everybody, first it was, ‘Mayweather was scared of this guy!’ What I do? I beat him! ‘Mayweather’s scared of that guy!’ I beat him! ‘Mayweather’s scared of this guy!’ I beat him! It’s getting to a point that, if me and Triple G would have fought when I was fighting, I would’ve beat him and then guess what! There’s going to be an excuse. Now it’s time for me to go to 168.”

Will Khan face Golovkin if he gets past Canelo?

khan54By Scott Gilfoid: It’s understood by all that Britain’s Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) faces a huge uphill climb in his 155lb catch-weight title fight against the bigger, stronger, younger and some would say more talented WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan is expected to lose and lose badly to the heavier Canelo. Heck, even if Khan bulks up to the 170s and faces Canelo at the same weight, he’s still expected to get blasted to smithereens by the red-haired star. But, if Khan can get past Canelo, he’ll be the new WBC 160lb champion and he’ll be faced with the responsibility of facing the interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in his first defense of the title.

The big question is will Khan defend his WBC middleweight title against Golovkin or will he vacate the title and slink away off into the sunset. As much as I see Khan as a terribly fragile fighter in terms of his chin, I actually think he’ll take the fight with Golovkin.

GGG’s priorities: Wade, Canelo-Khan winner & Saunders, says Loeffler

golovkinBy Dan Ambrose: It looks like 51-year-old Bernard Hopkins has been designated as a very low possibility for a potential future opponent for IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in 2016. According to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, his main focus is his April 23 fight against his IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs), and then the winner of the May 7 fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan, and then WBO 160lb champion Billy Joe Saunders.

If Golovkin can get past Wade, which would seem very likely, then he’ll look to fight the Canelo-Khan winner. Loeffler says the winner of that fight will be stripped of their WBC title by the World Boxing Council if they refuse to face GGG.

Mayweather: I would beat Triple G, then fans would want me to move to 168

Image: Mayweather: I would beat Triple G, then fans would want me to move to 168By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. believes the fans would continue to ask him to jump through additional hoops if he were to make a comeback and defeat IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Mayweather has no doubts that he would beat the undefeated Golovkin if he were to stage a comeback, but he sees no point in taking that fight. The fans would give him grief and ask him to move up to 168 to fight the top super middleweights.

Mayweather turns 39 today, and he seems to have no interest in making a comeback. If he does decide to resume his career, then he’s going to need to do it soon before he starts losing his skills due to age inactivity. Mayweather was out of the ring for a long spell in the past from the end of 2007 to 2009, but he was younger then and still in his prime. At 39, Mayweather is clearly slower than he was in the past and he can’t expect to stay out of the ring for much longer and have success if he does choose to resume his career.

Hopkins says he would come down in weight for GGG fight

Image: Hopkins says he would come down in weight for GGG fightBy Tim Fletcher: Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs), now inactive, says he accepted a fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, and that he would have come down in weight from light heavyweight to take the fight with the 33-year-old Kazakhstan fighter. Hopkins says that Golovkin would have had to come up in weight from middleweight to take the fight.

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler said recently that a fight against Hopkins is something that they would be open to if they can’t get a unification clash against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September.
