Sanchez comments on Mayweather telling Golovkin to fight Ward

golovkin#236By Allan Fox: Trainer Abel Sanchez thinks it’s completely ridiculous for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to want Gennady Golovkin to move up to light heavyweight to fight Andre Ward before he’ll agree to fight him. Sanchez thinks that it would be too hard on Golovkin to move up in weight to fight Ward, and then have to come all the way down to 154 immediately after to face Mayweather.

Sanchez points out that Golovkin was willing to move up to 168 in the past for a fight against Carl Froch and move down to 154 to fight Mayweather. However, a fight against Froch would have been a big money fight for Golovkin with him making potentially $10 million at the minimum and possibly as much as $15 million.

Froch is capable of selling out the 80,000 seat Wembley Stadium in London, England. Froch is a pay-per-view attraction. Ward is not a PPV star, and he’s arguably not capable of selling out an 80,000 seat stadium at this point in his career.

Khan: Brook is stupid for calling out Golovkin

khan4By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan thinks IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook came off looking like a stupid little girl recently when Brook said he wants to fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin at a catch-weight of 157lbs.

Khan thinks that Golovkin doesn’t know who Brook is, and he would seriously hurt the 29-year-old welterweight if ever given the chance to fight him. Both Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned wanting to make the fight with GGG this past week at a catch-weight of 157lbs. To me, it looks like Brook is trying to get attention like the kind Amir Khan is receiving with his fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their fight on May 7.

Golovkin-Wade 30-day weigh-in results

golovkin2By Jim Dower: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) were both on target with their weights at the 30-day weigh-in this week for their fight on April 23 at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin weighed in at an unbelievable 164lbs for the 30-day weigh-in. Wade, 25, came in much heavier at 175.6.bs. The World Boxing Council mandates that their fighters weigh-in 30 days prior to their fights in order to make sure their weight is within target range to make weight. Both Wade and Golovkin made weight.

Kell Brook: I will fight Gennady Golovkin

brook5333By Scott Gilfoid: Earlier this week, news came out about how Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn said he was interested in matching his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) against unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight Gennady “GGG” Golovkin at a catch-weight of 157lbs.

At the time, many boxing fans felt that Hearn was just name-dropping in order to attract interest in Brook’s fight this Saturday night against #1 IBF contender Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs), who Brook will be facing at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK. There are rumors that the fight failed to sell out.

Mayweather: Golovkin has to beat Ward, then I’ll fight him

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Chris Williams: Superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) says he’ll give IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) the fight he badly wants as long as he first calls out former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre “SOG” Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) and beats him first.

That’s all Golovkin has to do, and then Mayweather will come back and fight the Kazakhstan fighter. However, since it doesn’t look like Golovkin will be fighting Ward anytime soon, it’s safe to say that the boxing world won’t be seeing a Mayweather vs. Golovkin fight.

Is Canelo able to compete without a weight advantage?

1-DSC07258By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) has become accustomed to having a weight advantage over many of his opponents during his pro career. I get the distinct feeling that Canelo feels he can’t compete at a high level without having a size advantage over his opponents.

It’s sad if this turns out to be true, because it could mean that Canelo might use catch-weights his entire career in order to get an a constant advantage over his opponents.

Canelo’s trainer says they won’t fight GGG at 160

1-CaneloKhanNYPC_Hoganphotos9By Chris Williams: It looks like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is going to need to swallow his pride and agree to some kind of catch-weight if he wants to fight WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in September for the WBC title.

Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso says they absolutely will not fight Golovkin at 160. They feel comfortable at 155lbs, and even at 154. With that said, Reynoso says the negotiation will be very important between the two fighters. Golovkin might want to give in to Canelo if he really wants this fight.

Matthysse could fight in September on Canelo-Golovkin card

matthysse567676By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya believes that 33-year-old Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs9 could be ready to return to the ring later this year on a pay-per-view card in September. The PPV card would be Gennady Golovkin vs. the Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, if that fight takes place then.

Matthysse suffered a fractured orbital bone in his 10th round knockout loss to unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol last October in their fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Matthysse was dropped in the 10th round after getting hit with a solid right hand to his left eye.

Matthysse then stayed down and was counted out. The injury to Matthysse’s eye has kept him out of action ever since. It’s unknown if he’ll be physically or mentally ready to fight in September or not.
