Golovkin #1 pound-for-pound, not Andre Ward says Sanchez

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-131

By Dan Ambrose: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez saw last Saturday’s fight between IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward, and he feels that the three judges gave the victory to the wrong fighter. As far as Sanchez is concerned, Kovalev won that fight. Ward’s win over Kovalev has moved him from No.4 to No.2 in the pound-for-pound ratings.

Ward is still behind #1 Roman Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KOs) despite his fight with Kovalev being labeled ‘pound for pound’ by the promoters for the card. It looks like Ring Magazine didn’t buy into it to give the top spot to Ward his less than stellar showing against Kovalev. Golovkin got demoted from No.3 to No.4 after last Saturday’s Kovalev-Ward fight instead of being pushed up the ratings like he probably should have.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez: Who beats who?

golovkin633

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is supposedly waiting until September 2017 before making the fight between their fighter Saul Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) against each other. The idea is that Canelo needs more time to grow into the middleweight division, and there needs more time to make the fight bigger between them.

At least that’s the line from Golden Boy. However, it’s generally believed by a lot of boxing fans is that Golden Boy and Canelo are waiting for the soon to be 35-year-old Golovkin age a little more so that he’s less of a threat to beating Canelo.

Golovkin vs. Jacobs fight looking good for March

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-33

By Dan Ambrose: WBA ‘regular’ middleweight champion Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) is feeling confident that the negotiations between him and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will soon be completed in the next couple of weeks for a fight between them in March 2017.

The boxing fans want to see the Golovkin vs. Jacobs fight. They were supposed to face each other in December, but the negotiations between the two fighters were making slow progress.

Will Mayweather-Pacquiao 2 hurt Canelo-Golovkin PPV numbers?

degale-jack-mayweather-gervonta-40

By Eric Baldwin: There’s a slight possibility that we could see a rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in 2017 in what would be a rematch of their boring and some would say highly overpriced ‘fight of the century’ match last year in May 2015. There’s no indication that the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch will take place next year, but if it does, it could potentially cause fallout if the middleweight fight between champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul Canelo Alvarez takes place after it in September 2017.

If the boxing public is angered by anther less than compelling match-up between Mayweather and Pacquiao like the previous fight, the fans might be less willing to put their hard-earned money into a fight involving Golovkin and Canelo.

Ward: Froch should fight Golovkin

froch8944

By Scott Gilfoid: Former super middleweight champion Carl Froch said earlier on Wednesday that he thinks unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin should move up two weight classes to fight light heavyweight Andre Ward at a catchweight of 172 pounds in order to give him a credible opponent to fight.

Froch doesn’t think Golovkin has been fighting credible opponents despite the fact that he’s 36-0 and has defended his middleweight titles countless times. Ward has other ideas though. He wants to see Froch fight Golovkin. If Froch wasn’t willing to fight Golovkin two years ago after his second fight with George Groves, it’s not too likely he’ll take the fight now after he’s been out of the ring for two years.

Golovkin to Froch: You are a clown who talks too much

golovkin17

By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin tore into former super middleweight champion Carl Froch today in response to some of his comments he made recently about Triple G needing to step up and fight some “credible” opponents. Golovkin says that Froch is another “clown” who fails to step up. Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler very much would like to fight Froch if they could get him to agree to a match.

The fight would make millions and likely fill the huge 80,000 seat Wembley Stadium in London, England. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old Froch is showing zero interest in fighting the hard hitting GGG. Froch is happy in his 2-year retirement and doesn’t want to come back to resume his boxing career.

Froch WON’T fight Golovkin, wants him to face Andre Ward

golovkin633

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) won’t be facing former super middleweight champion Carl Froch, because he’s reportedly saying that he’s retired, almost 40, and that he’s too big for him. Froch says he’s not sure how the rumors started about him and Golovkin potentially facing each other, but he has no plans of taking that fight.

Froch says that Golovkin should move up two weight divisions to face former 168lb champion Andre Ward at a catch-weight of 172lbs. Froch feels this would be Golovkin’s first real test of his boxing career. Froch didn’t come out and admit it, but he seems to be implying that he thinks Ward will beat IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KOs) in their fight on Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to Wikipedia, ‘Pound for pound is a term used in combat sports such as boxing or mixed martial arts to reflect an assessment as to who the better fighters are, regardless of size (i.e., regardless of weight class).

Golovkin vs. Froch possible says Loeffler

golovkin633

By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says he’s in talks with Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn about a potential fight between Golovkin and former super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs). Loeffler says initially they were “half joking” about wanting to put a fight together between Golovkin and the retired 39-year-old Froch, but after seeing how much interest the fight talk has generated on social media, he says they’re seriously interested in making the fight.

Loeffler wants to stage the Golovkin-Froch fight at the 80,000 seat Wembey Stadium in London, England. Loeffler believes the Froch vs. Golovkin fight would break the record for tickets sold from the Froch vs. George Groves fight in May 2014 at Wembley Stadium.

Golovkin rates Jacobs as strongest 160lb contender

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-131

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is not perceived as the best of the middleweight contenders in the eyes of unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. He feels that WBA ‘regular’ middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) is the strongest of the contenders in the division. Golovkin may have unintentionally skipped over the 26-year-old Canelo due to his persistence in calling himself a junior middleweight instead of a middleweight, but my guess is Golovkin doesn’t rate him as highly as he does the 29-year-old Jacobs.

Golovkin and Jacobs are supposed to be facing each other in the first quarter of 2017 if the fight can get negotiated by their management. If not, then one of them will need to give up their WBA titles, and move on. It doesn’t look like Golovkin is going to be that guy though, because he absolutely wants to hold onto his WBA title. Golovkin’s goal is to unify all the belts in the 160lb division.
