Broner: I’m expected to take over Boxing when Mayweather and Pacquiao retire

broner111By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) is starting to realize the responsibility that is resting on his shoulders now that he’s on the verge of taking over Boxing given that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are both on their last legs in terms of fighting at a high level.

Broner understands that it’s going to be him that carries the torch when those two stars creep into retirement in the near future, and he’ll be the only pay per view star the sport has to offer.

Broner said “There are high expectations for me to take over boxing after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao hang up the gloves.”

Broner: I felt like I punched through Rees’ spine

broner77By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) says he felt like the left hand that he dropped Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) last night was a shot that went right through the Welsh fighter in the 5th. Broner says he really hit him hard with that body shot, and felt it with his hand.

Broner said “He [Rees] was ready to go in 3 or 4. I went back to my corner and told Mike [Stafford] he has two rounds in him, and my prediction was right always. I felt like I punched right through his back. Don’t you see it? I felt like I punched through his spine. It was a hard shot. The kid was good…he was good.”

Broner’s dad: Ricky Burns is afraid of Adrien; he’ll run from us if we try to fight him

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s dad took over the last part of last night’s post fight press conference following Broner’s impressive 5th round TKO win over UK fighter Gavin Rees. Broner’s dad said he doesn’t see any point in Broner trying to get a unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Ricky Burns because he feels Burns will run from the fight and choose to either vacate or go off in another direction.

Here’s some of what Broner’s dad had to say:

“All y’all worried about Ricky Burns. He’s nobody. Give us somebody that wants to fight. He’s scared. We tried to fight him at 130, [but] he ran from us, just gave us the belt. We tried him at 135. He ran from us again.

Rees’ trainer almost stopped the fight in the 3rd

broner12By Scott Gilfoid: Gary Lockett, the trainer for the beaten Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s), says he was thinking about throwing in the white towel of surrender in the 3rd round when Rees was getting drilled by WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) late in the round while trapped against the ropes.

Lockett said “I was going to pull him [Rees] out in the fourth. I considered pulling him out after the third.”

In hindsight, I don’t think anyone would have made much of a squabble if Lockett had pulled the plug on Rees after the 3rd because he looked like a little 5’4” punching bag in that round, and I saw enough in the last 20 seconds of that round to know that nothing good could come of leaving Rees in there from that point.

Will HBO invite Gavin Rees back after his performance against Broner?

broner45By Scott Gilfoid: Last night, Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) was blown apart by WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) in a two knockdown, 5th round TKO loss in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Other than a few shots here and there landed by Rees in the first couple of rounds when Broner was just playing around, it was totally one-sided.

In the build-up to the fight, Rees’ promoter Eddie Hearn had said that even if Rees loses the fight, HBO would likely be so impressed with his performance that they would possibly invite him back. I didn’t see that scenario happening, and after watching Broner knock Rees down twice last night, I seriously doubt HBO will be looking to have Rees come over to televise one of his fights in the near future.

Warren wants Burns vs. Broner

burns35By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ promoter Frank Warren says he’d like to make a fight between Burns and the American talent WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner if Burns can get past his next fight against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th. That’s going to be a tough fight, and I can see Vazquez winning that one and ruining Warren’s plans for a Burns-Broner fight.

Warren said in his column frankwarrentv.com “Ricky prevails in his pending tough unification bout against Mexico’s IBF box Miguel Vasquez at Wembley Arena on 16th March, I’ll be uprooting trees to broker a GB-USA super fight to determine top dog at 135lbs before the year is through and I’ll be backing Ricky, no ‘Problem.”

Adrien Broner: “He hits incredibly hard for a lightweight”

broner46By Cutman’s Stool:  The “Problem” Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) gave a steamrolling performance last night in the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City.  The Boxing sensation just looked too big and powerful for the much smaller Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s).  Broner defended his WBC lightweight title which is pretty much going to be his as long as he remains in the division.

Gavin Rees ring walk began with him looking as cool as ever, he and his small entourage (compared to Broner’s) entered with Apollo 440 “Can’t Stop the Rock”.  The Rock entered the ring looking quite confident and ready to just get on with it.

Burns has nothing to fear from Adrien Broner

rees7By Steven Ocallaghan: After watching WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) stop a very game but ultimately over-matched Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) in at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA last night, I don’t think there is any reason for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) to feel worried at all. I always thought Broner would win, but I thought Rees would take him a little further but it was a good performance. In watching Broner’s performance it took him a couple of rounds to warm up but the main thing I noticed is that he is a 1 minute a round fighter.

In the fourth round in particular, after Rees got back up, Broner was just throwing punches with no intent, lazy tired punches. Maybe he was conserving energy or maybe it is the strain of making 135. He walked in the ring about 150 and that can have an effect.

Hearn crows about UK boxing fans being more passionate than U.S fans

By Scott Gilfoid: With little to be happy about last night in watching his fighter Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) get totally blown out in embarrassing fashion by WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s), Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Rees, could only tweet about how much more passionate the typical British fans were compared to the U.S fans.

Broner: Nobody can beat me

broner545By Allan Fox: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) showed last night why he’s one of the hardest punchers in the 135 lb. division last night in destroying his challenger Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) in five rounds in successfully defending his WBC lightweight crown in front of a packed Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Broner used straight right hands, uppercuts and left hooks to pacify an energetic and motivated Rees. In doing so, Broner knocked Rees down twice, putting him down in the 4th and 5th with power shots. Rees got up both times, but he probably should have stayed down because Broner was simply too strong in that fight.
