Roach: Chavez Jr. will break Sergio Martinez down and KO him

Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. will break Sergio Martinez down and KO himBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) will be squaring off against Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) this Saturday night in a PPV bout on HBO in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chavez Jr’s trainer Freddie Roach thinks that Martinez lacks the boxing skills and the experience to beat his fighter Chavez Jr.

Roach said “Sergio is a great athlete, but I don’t think he’s a great boxer. He doesn’t have the experience. I think we’ll [Chavez Jr] break him down and knock him out.”

Roach: Money was a huge reason why Marquez was chosen for Pacquiao

Image: Roach: Money was a huge reason why Marquez was chosen for PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach revealed that one of the deciding factors in 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez being selected for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight on December 8th was because of the money that Marquez can bring in with pay per view buys compared to the less popular Tim Bradley.

Roach told RingTV “It [the money] was a huge factor. Bradley doesn’t bring the people that Marquez does. Marquez has the pay per view following, and I think that at their last fight, the Mexican’s outdrew the Filipinos by a large, large margin.”

Roach doesn’t want Pacquiao-Marquez fourth fight to take place

Image: Roach doesn't want Pacquiao-Marquez fourth fight to take placeBy Chris Williams: All signals are pointing to promoter Bob Arum picking out 39-year-old Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) for Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) to fight next in a non-title fight on December 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arum likes the fight, likes the kind of money it can bring in on pay per view on HBO, and likes that Mexican fans will likely want to see the fight in high numbers even though it’s a tired match-up that’s already taken place three times in the past.

Roach: Chavez Jr. not interested in moving to 168 lbs

Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. not interested in moving to 168 lbsBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach thinks that WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) should move up in weight to at least the 168 pound division due to how hard it is for Chavez Jr. to make weight for his fights at middleweight. However, Chavez Jr’s isn’t hearing it and is not interested in moving up to the super middleweight division.

He’s happy fighting at middleweight, where he often drains down from as high as 180 lbs to make weight at 160.

Roach: Chavez Jr. works out when he wants to

Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. works out when he wants toBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach shockingly revealed that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) sets his own agenda when he wants to work out with him instead of there being a set schedule as the 26-year-old Chavez Jr gets ready for his September 15th fight against Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach said on Chavez Jr-Martinez 24/7 on HBO, “He [Chavez Jr] works out when he wants to. I’ve got calls at 2 o’clock in the morning to come into the gym. It bugs me a little bit, but overall it’s okay as long as we get the work done I’m happy. He’s definitely got an instinct as a fighter. He’s not a natural like his father [Julio Cesar Chavez Sr]. He has to work at it a little bit harder.”

Khan’s losses not Roach’s fault

Image: Khan's losses not Roach's faultBy John F. McKenna (McJack): Rumors continue to circulate that former WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) is in the hunt for a new trainer after losing two straight fights under five time trainer of the year Freddie Roach. Khan has been vacillating between taking responsibility for the losses and then seemingly throwing Roach under the bus in his words to the press.

Khan lost his WBA and IBF title belts in a highly controversial decision last December to the now disgraced Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s). When it was revealed that Peterson had taken the banned substance testosterone, the WBA stripped Lamont of his WBA belt. The IBF however failed to act and did not strip Peterson of his IBF belt.

Khan to make announcement about trainer situation in next few days

Image: Khan to make announcement about trainer situation in next few daysBy Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) will be making an announcement about his trainer situation in the next few days. It’s highly possible that Khan will be giving his current trainer Freddie Roach the boot at that time and going with someone else to take over the training reigns.

Khan said on his twitter page “Updates on my career, opponents and coaches, in next few days. Stay tuned.”

At this point I think it’s for the best that Khan dump Roach because his career has hit a tailspin with two consecutive losses. Whatever was working with them is no longer working and Khan can’t really afford to get sparked out again. He blasted out in his last fight in four rounds by WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia and in his fight before that Khan was beaten by Lamont Peterson.

Roach wants Cotto for Pacquiao, thinks it will increase his negotiation power for Mayweather fight

Image: Roach wants Cotto for Pacquiao, thinks it will increase his negotiation power for Mayweather fightBy Chris Williams: If trainer Freddie Roach had his way he’d match his fighter former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao up against Miguel Cotto next so that it could potentially help Pacquiao in negotiating a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year. Roach says Cotto has agreed to fight the Filipino star Pacquiao at a catchweight of 150 pounds.
