Sergio Martinez: Chavez Jr. showed a lack of respect for Roach and the fans

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was thoroughly disgusted by what he saw of former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s training methods in watching him prepare for their fight last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martinez felt that Chavez Jr. didn’t give it his all, and that he didn’t approach his training camp in the right manner for him to be successful.

A dark cloud persists over trainer Roach: Chavez Jr. schooled by Martinez

Image: A dark cloud persists over trainer Roach: Chavez Jr. schooled by MartinezBy Babatis Banda: We witnessed a one sided battle over the week-end where Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was taught a very good lesson by the veteran Sergio Martinez. It was simply a one sided match from round one until the twelfth round when Martinez was decked, but survived the scare. It was clear that speed, a set of good legs and a superior boxing ability reigned supreme over sheer size and power.

Even if Martinez had been counted out, it could have made very little difference to the fact that Martinez is at a higher level than Chavez Jr. In fact, in my own opinion, Chavez junior does not even deserve a re-match, at least not in the immediate future until he proves himself again by winning his next fight, and against a competitive opponent.

Roach’s bad luck continues; Chavez Jr. beaten by Martinez

Image: Roach's bad luck continues; Chavez Jr. beaten by MartinezBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach has got a really bad losing streaking going with his top fighters getting beaten one after another for the past year starting with Jorge Linares’ 11th round TKO loss to Antonio DeMarco last October.

Things have steadily gotten worse since then for Roach with his #2 fighter Amir Khan suffering back to back losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Then there was Roach’s #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao getting picked off by Tim Bradley last June. And now Roach’s new #2 fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. getting soundly beaten by Sergio Martinez by a one-sided beat down last Saturday night.

Roach: We [Chavez Jr] didn’t work hard enough

Image: Roach: We [Chavez Jr] didn't work hard enoughBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach was disappointed to see yet another one of his fighters lose recently with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) tasting defeat for the first time last Saturday night at the hands of Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s).

In watching the Chavez Jr-Martinez 24/7 episodes on HBO it’s really not surprising that Chavez Jr. was so ill prepared for the fight because his training camp looked like one of the worst disorganized camps I’ve ever seen before. Chavez Jr. spent a lot of time working out at home rather than in the gym with Roach, and you just knew that he was going to have problems trying to figure out how to dissect Martinez’s fighting style.

Roach wanted Pacquiao to fight Danny Garcia to show Khan what he could do his conqueror

Image: Roach wanted Pacquiao to fight Danny Garcia to show Khan what he could do his conquerorBy William Mackay: Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach revealed yesterday that he was hoping to match Manny Pacquiao up against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia to show Khan how good Pacquiao would do against the same guy that beat him. Roach obviously not happy at being let go by Khan as a trainer, seemed to be in the mood score points against him in this interview.

Speaking with writer Chris Robinson of examiner.com Roach said “I wanted him [Pacquiao] to fight the guy Garcia, Danny Garcia. I wanted that fight because Amir Khan says that I don’t teach defense to him and Manny Pacquiao. Why did he compare himself to Manny Pacquiao?…Let’s see what Manny does with your last opponent. Manny wouldn’t lose a round.”

Roach: Mayweather can’t move like he used to because of age; Pacquiao and him are an even fight

Image: Roach: Mayweather can't move like he used to because of age; Pacquiao and him are an even fightBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t think that WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has his legs anymore under him due to old age starting to set in for the 35-year-old champion. Mayweather took a lot of heavy shots in his last fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last May in winning that fight.

Roach believes the punishment that Mayweather took was because he couldn’t move around to avoid Cotto’s shots because of his legs not working like they once did.

Roach: Chavez Jr. is slowly getting as good as his father

Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. is slowly getting as good as his fatherBy Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach believes that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) isn’t as good as his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. (107-6-2, 86 KO’s) was during his career but Roach thinks that Chavez Jr. is on his way to becoming as good.

Roach said “He’s [Chavez Jr] a tough, tough kid. He has a great chin, one his best assets. These guys can’t walk though punches like he can. He wants to be as good as his father. He’s slowly getting there.”
