Pacquiao, Marquez and Mayweather are legends, but is Roach?

Image: Pacquiao, Marquez and Mayweather are legends, but is Roach?By Rameez Haider: After Manny Pacquiao’s brutal defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez last night, the jury is out. The same debate has raged over Mayweather and Pacquiao, and the new debate over how Marquez was so strong has begun.

I’ve always been a Mayweather fan and I have always maintained for many a year that if the super fight between Mayweather and Pacquaio was to ever happen, Mayweather would be the victor. However, I am also a true boxing fan, which means I am also a Pacquiao fan as he has been fantastic for the sport. The way in which Pacquiao has dispatched of the likes of Hatton, De La Hoya, Cotto, Morales etc has without doubt sealed his place in the hall of fame. Last night he was simply beaten by a fellow legend in Marquez, a true warrior, but the question I ask is whether Freddie Roach really is as good a people claim?

Roach takes responsibility for Pacquiao’s aggressive fight strategy that lead to KO loss

Image: Roach takes responsibility for Pacquiao’s aggressive fight strategy that lead to KO lossBy Chris Williams: One got a sense that trainer Freddie Roach was going up the wrong avenue by telling his fighter Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) that he had to go back to the “old Manny” and that he had to be more aggressive for his fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 40 KO’s).

As it turns out, that was a disastrous plan as Pacquiao ran right into a huge right hand by Marquez and was knocked out cold last night. It’s hard to believe that an expert trainer like Roach would have Pacquiao fighting in such reckless manner because that kind of fighting approach had already led to Pacquiao losing other fights earlier in his career before he changed his style to be a little more cautious.

Roach still convinced Pacquiao can’t win a decision against Marquez if it’s a close fight

Image: Roach still convinced Pacquiao can’t win a decision against Marquez if it’s a close fightBy Chris Williams: Of all the people who you’d think would be complaining about being in the position of being on the losing end of a questionable decision the last person you’d think would be Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao has had the judge’s side with him for two controversial decisions over Marquez in the past along with a controversial draw, yet Roach thinks Pacquiao is in the position tonight where he absolutely will need a knockout in order to win if the fights even slightly close.

Can Roach bring out the old Manny against Marquez?

Image: Can Roach bring out the old Manny against Marquez?By Chris Williams: It’s been ages since Manny Pacquiao fought like he used to. Trainer Freddie Roach is going to need to do something to find that long lost Pacquiao because he’s in a world of hurt tomorrow night if he doesn’t.

The Pacquiao of old was a nonstop puncher with incredible hand speed and an ability to jump in and out to change angles on his shots. That was the only Manny. The Manny that exists today is a flat-footed fighter much of the time, who needs constant rest breaks, and who tends to do very little for significant periods of each round.

Roach: Marquez will have problems with this version of Pacquiao

Image: Roach: Marquez will have problems with this version of PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is once again blaming Manny Pacquiao’s poor performance against Juan Manuel Marquez in their third fight on Pacquiao having some personal problems that got in the way of his focus for the fight. Roach says that Pacquiao isn’t having those same problems for his fourth fight against Marquez on December 8th.

Roach told the Boxing Channel at fighthubtv.com “His [Pacquiao] focus is a lot better. I think Marquez is going to have a lot of problems with this Manny Pacquiao…We had some personal problems. [last time]”

Roach says he was just joking about Marquez PED suspicions

Image: Roach says he was just joking about Marquez PED suspicionsBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is now reportedly saying that he was merely joking when he was questioning how Juan Manuel Marquez had put on muscle weight recently for his fight with Roach’s fighter Manny Pacquiao.

Roach said this as quoted by Fighthype.com when asked to discuss his comments made earlier this week about Marquez’s muscles “I was just joking.”

In an interview earlier this week with usatoday.com Roach said about Marquez “If [Marquez’s body] is natural, I will kiss his a**.”

“Pacman” Pacquiao vs. “Dinamita” Marquez IV: Preview

Image: “Pacman” Pacquiao vs. “Dinamita” Marquez IV: PreviewBy Gerardo Granados: A great trilogy full of action but also full of controversy; it seems like it won’t matter who the fight judges are because if the fight is close they will be criticized once again. In the first fight an error made by one judge ended with a draw decision but the fans must remember that Manny Pacquiao hit Juan Manuel Marquez while he was down so one point should have been deducted but the referee did not even warn Manny.

On his third fight Marquez was the clear winner but sports writers all around couldn’t agree on who won the fight, some saw Pacquiao win others correctly saw Juan Manuel win and the few saw them draw the fight. Not even in the Philippines there was a consensus on Pacquiao´s victory and local sports analyst saw Marquez win.

Roach: Behind the “Red Flag” of Marquez

Image: Roach: Behind the "Red Flag" of MarquezBy Rusty Nate: Freddie Roach, the trainer for Manny Pacquiao has recently made comments suggesting that Marquez has “raised a red flag” by bulking up his muscle mass in an interview with USA Today. Now Roach was quite deliberate in staying close to the line without crossing it. After all Pacquiao just sued Floyd Mayweather for the same claim and if Pacquiao’s trainer then started throwing around the accusations it would look pretty stupid.

So what was the reason for this?

Roach: Me and Buboy have been working on Pacquiao’s aggressiveness

Image: Roach: Me and Buboy have been working on Pacquiao's aggressivenessBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach and Buboy Fernandez, one of Manny Pacquiao’s helpers, has been assisting Roach at trying to extract some aggression from Pacquiao to change enough to where he’ll dominate 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th and beat for the first time convincingly without boxing fans crying foul.

Roach said to the Manila Bulletin “We are going to be the aggressor and me and Buboy have been working with Manny being more aggressive. We’re going to have more momentum and he [Pacquiao] is really doing well with it.” Roach sounds like a broken record with this whole ‘bring more aggressiveness’ theme for Pacquiao.

Roach: Marquez’s extra muscle will make him slow for Pacquiao

Image: Roach: Marquez's extra muscle will make him slow for PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach has noticed that Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) has put on a little extra muscle for his fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) next month on December 8th and Roach is predicting that the extra muscle is going to end up hurting the 39-year-old Marquez by making him slow.

Roach says that Marquez threw less punches in his last fight against Pacquiao last November, and he feels it was because of the extra muscle that Marquez had. Roach doesn’t say why his own fighter Pacquiao also threw less punches, but that’s the point. Roach’s theme is that Marquez’s extra muscle is making him slow.
