Exclusive Q & A by Ian Aldous: On Sunday September 16th, former British and commonwealth welterweight champion, Frankie Gavin (25-3), will fight in his hometown of Birmingham as a tune-up for his European welterweight title tilt on Saturday November 17th against the undefeated champion, Kerman Lejarraga (25-0), in Bilbao, Spain. Earlier this week, the former amateur world champion took some time to talk with me ahead of a make-or-break stage in his professional career.

By Scott Gilfoid: Sam Eggington (19-3, 11 KOs) was too much for former welterweight world title challenger Frankie Gavin (23-3, 14 KOs) in stopping him in the 8th round on Saturday night to claim the vacant WBC International welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, Uk.

Frankie Gavin vs. Sam Eggington this Saturday

gavin

By Scott Gilfoid: A nice little domestic level scrap will be taking place this Saturday night between former welterweight world title challenger Frankie Gavin (23-2, 14 KOs) and Sam Egginton (18-3, 10 KOs) on October 22 in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Council International welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena.

It’s a decent fight between two second tier fighters that are battling hard to get into the top tier to challenge the bigger names. Gavin, 31, already fought for a world title in May of 2015 in losing a 6th round knockout to IBF 147lb champion Kell Brook.

There was nothing in that performance from Gavin that would suggest that he can come again and have better results against Brook or one of the other champions in the welterweight division, but you can’t blame Gavin for wanting to try.

Gavin pulls out of Eggington fight

brook54566By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) has pulled out of his fight against British/Commonwealth and WBC International welterweight champion Sam Eggington after suffering a foot injury. Gavin was supposed to face Eggington on October 17th at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, UK.

Gavin was totally whipped in his last fight by IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in a nice little mismatch that took place last May at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Surprisingly, Gavin was ranked No.5 at the time by the International Boxing Federation despite the fact that he’d never beaten anyone good.

Frankie Gavin vs. Sam Eggington & Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn on October 17th

macklin56By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) will be taking his career in reverse mode in his next fight when he faces domestic fighter Sam Eggington (16-2, 9 KOs) on October 17th at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. It’s not surprising that Gavin’s career is being taken backwards step after his recent losses to IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook last May, and Leonard Bundu in 2014.

In between those defeats, Gavin beat a mess of domestic level fighters and proved that he can bet those types of fighters. However, Gavin did have a controversial decision win over Bradley Skeete in 2014, which tells you that Gavin is basically a domestic level fighter himself in terms of boxing skills and talent.

Frankie Gavin moving down to 140

By Scott Gilfoid: In a predictable move, #4 IBF welterweight contender Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) says he’s going to be moving down to 140 to campaign as a light welterweight. This comes after the 29-year-old Gavin was stopped in the 6th round by IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) last Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Hearn: Brook would stop Algieri in 3 rounds, the media needs to pressure Khan to fight

brook56By Allan Fox: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn thinks that Brook would make easy work of Chris Algieri. In fact, Hearn thinks Brook would stop Algieri in three rounds. Hearn appears to have randomly picked out Algieri’s name out of frustration because the guy that he wants to face Brook, Amir Khan, beat Algieri by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision last Friday night in New York.

Hearn mentions Rios, Thurman and Pacquiao as potential opponents for Brook

brook3By Allan Fox: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in upgrading the opposition for his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) following his noncompetitive fight against Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Hearn put together an in house fight between Brook and Rios, both of which he promotes, and the fight was disappointingly one-sided with Brook having his way from start to finish in a 6th round knockout victory. After the fight, Hearn mentioned being frustrated that Amir Khan won’t agree to fight Brook.

Brook beats Gavin; Joshua crushes Johnson; Linares and Selby win

brook2By Scott Gilfoid: In a fight that looked more like a glorified sparring session rather than an actual fight, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) won an easy 6th round stoppage against an over-matched #4 IBF Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday night in the Rule Britannica card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Gavin was hurt by a right hand in the 6th by Brook. Gavin then turned his back and scurried to the ropes. Brook then teed off on a hurt Gavin until he crouched down, causing referee Steve Gray to step in and halt the bout at 2:51 of the round.
