Sturm vs. Soliman: Felix looking to put himself in position to win a title

sturm32343534By Allan Fox: Former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-3, 16 KO’s) is fighting an IBF World middleweight title eliminator against 39-year-old Sam Soliman (42-11, 17 KO’s) on February 1st at the ISS Dome in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Sturm, 33, needs a win here over Soliman to become the mandatory challenger for IBF champion Daniel Geale, who recently beat Sturm by a 12 round split decision in September. That was a rare loss for Sturm but not necessarily an unexpected one, as he struggled badly against Ronald Hearns, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray in 2011.

Sturm vs. Soliman in IBF 160 lb title eliminator on February 2nd, in Düsseldorf, Germany

Image: Sturm vs. Soliman in IBF 160 lb title eliminator on February 2nd, in Düsseldorf, GermanyBy Eric Thomas: Former WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16 KO’s) could find himself fighting for a world title very soon if he can get past 39-year-old Sam Soliman (42-11, 17 KO’s) in their IBF World middleweight title eliminator bout on February 2nd at the SS Dome, in Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Sturm, 33, lost his WBA title to IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale in their unification bout last September in a 12 round split decision loss for Sturm, but all he has to do now is beat Soliman, who you can argue has an incredibly inflated ranking by the International Boxing Federation, and Sturm could then be fighting the winner of the January 30th bout between Geale and Anthony Mundine.

Image: Sturm expected to vacate WBA title if he beats Geale tonightBy Jason Kim: In a move that surely won’t be a popular one if he does it, WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-2-2, 16 KO’s) is expected to immediately vacate his World Boxing Association 160 pound title if he defeats IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (27-1, 15 KO’s) tonight in their fight in Germany.

German news site bild.de is reporting that the 33-year-old Sturm will be giving up his WBA title in order to keep the IBF belt. By doing this, Sturm will be able to avoid a much tougher fight against the winner of tonight’s fight between WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Grzegorz Proksa.
