Lara picks up WBA 154 lb title, wants Canelo, Mayweather and Golovkin now

lara543By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Association finally wised up in elevating Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) to the WBA 154 lb champion after his back to back big wins over Alfredo Angulo and Austin Trout. The way that Lara defeated Trout, a fighter that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez failed to prove that he was better then, it showed pretty clearly that Lara is arguably the 2nd best fighter in the 154 lb division behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Even Floyd Sr. said that he thinks Lara would beat Canelo if that fight were ever to be made. With the WBA title in his possession, Lara now wants Gennady Golovkin, Canelo or Mayweather. Whichever of these fighters want to face him, Lara is ready to fight them.

Erislandy Lara now WBA 154 lb champion

(Photo By Al Applerose) HOUSTON, TX (March 13, 2014) – Super Welterweight sensation, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) has been elevated to World Champion by the WBA (World Boxing Association) after successfully defending his interim title against Afredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) and Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs). The Cuban born fighter, who now resides in Houston, Texas, is happy that the WBA has made their decision to make him a World Champion.

“I applaud the WBA for their decision to make me a world champion and I want to send a special thank you to a good friend of mine Gilberto Mendoza from the WBA,” said Erislandy Lara. “I’ve never had anything come easy to me. I’ve fought everyone that has been offered to me with no hesitation. All I want is an opportunity to prove I’m the best fighter in the division. I’ve worked my entire life to become a world champion and now the dream has come true. I’m truly living the American Dream and I love this country that I now call home.”

Mayweather Sr: Erislandy Lara would be too much for Canelo

canelo300By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. feels there’s a problem with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in terms of his conditioning after he failed to make weight for his fight against Alfredo Angulo last Saturday night. Canelo would lose to WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, Mayweather Sr. says. He feels he’s not ready for a skilled fighter like Lara.

Floyd Sr. notes that Canelo stopped throwing combinations after the first few rounds and was just looking to land one shot at a time. Mayweather Sr. thinks he could help Canelo improve, but he’s not going to do it even if he asked him to. Canelo will need to improve on his own without Mayweather’s help if possible.

Erislandy Lara vs. Ishe Smith possible for May 2nd in Las Vegas

lara212By Dan Ambrose: WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) will likely be making his first defense of his interim WBA title against former IBF 154 lb champion Ishe Smith (25-6, 11 KO’s) on May 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. This is the fight that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is talking about making next for Lara.

It’s clearly not the big fight that Smith was hoping to get in taking on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but the red-haired Mexican fighter told him point blank last Saturday night that “you’ll have to wait.” It doesn’t matter that Canelo doesn’t have anyone better than Lara to fight next on July 26th. He’ll likely fight someone like Carlos Molina, who is clearly a couple of steps below Lara in terms of talent.

Alfredo Angulo was tailor made for Canelo; Lara’s Problem

canelo300By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: I wrote an article titled “Fighters; it’s okay to have defense. No Really it is” a little while ago. It touched on the Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara fight along with other topics. In the fight with Lara, Angulo defense was terrible. The swollen eye and damaged faced spoke volumes about Angulo’s defense and it spoke very loud and clear last night against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Everyone is crying that the fight was fixed. This fight wasn’t fixed at all. The only thing that was fixed was Canelo’s fists against Angulo’s face and body. Angulo was there to be hit, but he always has been. 3 of his 4 losses have come by stoppage against fighters who were a step up from his level of competition (Cornelius Brundage, Erislandy Lara, Saul Alvarez).

Lara confronts Canelo at post-fight press conference, and is brushed off

canelo74By Chris Williams: WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara got up on stage last night at the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – Alfredo Angulo post-fight press conference, and called Canelo out out in front of a large audience of media members. Instead of Canelo giving Lara hope for a future fight now that he’s had his easy tune-up fight against Angulo, Canelo told Lara that he has to wait for a fight a fight. Before saying that, Canelo questioned what fans are interested in seeing him fight Lara.

Here’s how the conversation played out:

Angulo: Lara is more talented than Canelo

003_Canelo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) has had a lot of opportunities to sit and watch the previous fights of former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) while getting ready for their fight this Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Angulo has concluded that Canelo doesn’t have the same kind of talent that WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara possesses.

Angulo lost to Lara by a 10th round TKO last year in June after their fight was halted in the 10th round. Angulo gave Lara a lot of problems in knocking him down twice in the fight. If not for Angulo suffering an eye injury, he’d have very likely won the fight.

Golovkin’s promoter not interested in Lara bout

lara5By Chris Williams: If you were hoping to see a fight between Cuban Erislandy Lara and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in April or anytime in the future, you can pretty much forget about it. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says that Lara isn’t someone that they have on their radar.

Loeffler wants to match Golovkin against one of the middleweight champions like Peter Quillin or Sergio Martinez in a unification bout. Loeffler points out that Lara doesn’t fight for HBO like Golvokin, and that he’s had draws in fights against Vanes Martirosyan and Carlos Molina in the past. He also says that Lara doesn’t fight in the same division as Golovkin.

Lara open to fighting Golovkin next

06 Lara IMG_3069(Photo credit: Showtime) By Allan Fox: If WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is open to the idea, WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) says he’s willing to fight him. This would be arguably the toughest fight of Golovkin’s career if he and his promoters at K2 Promotions were to agree to take the fight, but I can’t see them saying yes though.

Lara fights for Golden Boy Promotions on Showtime, while Golovkin fights on HBO. It’s doubtful that Showtime would say yes to Lara fighting on HBO, and it’s also possible that HBO wouldn’t go for the idea of a Showtime fighter fighting on HBO.

Mundine says he’ll be making a fight offer to Erislandy Lara

mundine544By Allan Fox: 38-year-old Anthony Mundine (46-5, 27 KO’s) is looking to put himself in position to get a big money fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2015, by facing interim WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) in his next fight. Mundine, #4 WBA, said last night that he’ll be making an offer to the Cuban Lara to get him in the ring as soon as possible.

Mundine said: “@Laraboxing Our offer will come soon! So take it. You come to Aussie school for a lesson. Cool out! We will see soon when we in the square circle! I ain’t gonna talk bout it but be about it. I’ll give something you never seen before! An Aboriginal lesson in boxing! Just tell your promoters to get in touch and make a deal.”
