Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko’s titles: The Ignored Contenders

Image: Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko's titles: The Ignored Contenders2012 was quite a busy year for Wladimir Klitschko. The quality of the opposition he faced was  poor as  Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach are hardly considered exciting match ups. Amongst the supposed mismatches the Polish warrior Mariusz Wach was the sole surprise, in a lopsided 12 round beating he showed a granite chin and seemingly unbreakable resolve.  He could be the fighter to watch for 2013.

Klitschko also lost a great friend and mentor in Emmanuel Steward. Nothing I can say could begin to capture the magic behind this man, and his effect on Wladimir,Lewis and Hearns in the past. The loss of a mentor is painful, although this was shown to be a motivator for Wladimir and also Jonathan Banks who won a surprise 2nd round KO against American prospect Seth Mitchell.

Emanuel Steward – Tough act to follow

Image: Emanuel Steward - Tough act to followBy John F. McKenna (McJack): When the contradicting news first broke that legendary trainer Emanuel Steward had passed away the hope was that it was just a rumor. But as time went on it gradually became clear that Steward had in fact died. It was the news nobody wanted to hear. Manny touched the lives of so many people, not all of them boxers.

Whenever Steward acted as a commentator for HBO the viewers got a special insight that only he could deliver. He was able to explain what was going on in a fight in a way which made it easy to understand. When Vitali Klitschko fought Tomasz Adamek in September 2011 the other commentators were sometimes baffled by the fact that “Dr. Ironfist” was able to hold his left hand down by his side while Adamek was unable to land any meaningful punches.

Klitschko-Wach: Can Wladimir beat Mariusz without Emanuel Steward?

Image: Klitschko-Wach: Can Wladimir beat Mariusz without Emanuel Steward?By Jason Kim: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (58-3, 50 KO’s) will be without his longstanding trainer Emanuel Steward for his next fight against Mariusz Wach (27-0, 15 KO’s) on November 10th at the O2 World Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Steward passed away this week from an undisclosed illness in the United States, leaving Wladimir to have to fight without his help against the hard hitting Wach.

Wladimir has replaced Steward with his sparring partner Johnathon Banks, who Wladimir says he’s quite happy with. He respects Banks’ expertise and likes the way he can analyze a fight. However, it’s still not going to be the same as having Steward’s tremendous knowledge there helping Wladimir. Steward has trained a huge number of top fighters throughout the years, and he’s going to be missed in the corner whether Wladimir wants to acknowledge it or not.

What happens with Andy Lee now that Emanuel Steward is gone?

Image: What happens with Andy Lee now that Emanuel Steward is gone?by Allan Fox: Middleweight contender Andy Lee (28-2, 20 KO’s) is just one of many fighters that will now be looking for a new mentor/trainer now that Emanuel Steward has passed away. The 28-year-old Lee has been with Steward for many years now, and he’s lived with him and trained at his Kronk gym.

Steward took a personal interest in trying to develop Lee, who was an amateur star from Ireland. However, things didn’t pan out as Steward had hoped, as Lee has suffered disappointing losses to Brian Vera and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. that have kept him from making it to the big time.

The UK fans will mourn for Emanuel Steward too; he gave us Lennox our greatest boxing Champion ever!

Image: The UK fans will mourn for Emanuel Steward too; he gave us Lennox our greatest boxing Champion ever!By Rob Blakeman: Emmanuel Steward’s name will forever be associated with the Kronk gym in Detroit where he had trained legendary fighters such as Thomas (Hitman) Hearns, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis and most recently Vlad Klitschko. He even trained Prince Naseem Hamed at the end of his career, attempting to teach the Prince to dance and use his feet in the way the greats did. No weakling himself, Steward had won 94 of 97 fights boxing as an amateur and was the bantamweight champion of America in 1963. Moving into the seventies he opened the Kronk sweat gym where he soon discovered his first world champion Hilmer Kenty, the first world champion the motor city of Detroit had seen since the great Joe Louis. The first real glimpse of Stewards talent came shining through in 1980 with the then vicious welterweight Hearns.

Steward was instrumental in constructing what is still regarded as the one of the greatest fights of all time, the super-fight between Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. Typically modest Steward said the whole thing was done in an hour. Hearns then went on to fight in THE greatest fight ever against Marvelous Marvin Hagler getting knocked out in the third round.

Adonis Stevenson’s trainer Emanuel Steward passes away

Image: Adonis Stevenson's trainer Emanuel Steward passes awayBy Dam Ambrose: Super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) had a huge blow to his career today with the death of his famous trainer Emanuel Steward, who passed away from an undisclosed cause in a Chicago hospital. Stevenson was really close to the 68-year-old Steward and he’d learned a lot from him during the time that Steward has worked with the 35-year-old Stevenson.

What really hurts is that Steward won’t be around to see Stevenson fight for a world title in 2013, and that’s got to hurt Stevenson because he was hoping Steward would be there for him when that moment came so that the two of them could share in that moment.

My tribute to Emanuel Steward

Image: My tribute to Emanuel StewardBy Mark Havey: Today the world of boxing is mourning the death of a legend. Emanuel Steward is one of the best trainer the world has ever seen. Well known for turning average fighters into pugilist specialists. The man has been the creator of legends.

the cause of death is presently unknown, but what is known is that Steward has been ill. The last few month have seen him admitted to hospital and a cut back in his work and public appearances. Like most people, I just thought this was the result of old age and the answer was for him to slow down. The illness was diverticulitis, but not necessarily the course of death.
