By Matt Stein: Unbeaten Russian Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14 KO’s) looked very impressive in stopping previously undefeated American Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KO’s) in the 5th round last Saturday night on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz clash at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jacobs, 23, was starched by a huge right hand from Pirog in the 5th that sent Jacobs down on the canvas where he laid with his eyes closed for a second or two before appearing to wake up. Jacobs then tried to get up, but referee Robert Byrd wisely chose to stop the fight at 0:57.

Marquez-Diaz Undercard: Upset for Jacobs while Guerrero and Linares cruise to victories
By Peter Wells: Not everything last night went as planned, as expected Robert Guerrero dominated the 38-year-old Joel Casamayor and took an easy decision apart from his last round scare, and Linares did enough to make Rocky Juarez’s late surge all for nothing. But it was Daniel Jacobs another promising star at Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), who slipped up on his big night.

By Christian Ramos: Golden Boy’s nightmare came true, and Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs 20-1 (17), suffers his first defeat by way of 5th round T.K.O. at the hands of the new WBO Middleweight Champion, or better stated titleholder, Dmitry Pirog 17-0 (14) of Russia. Though I’m nowhere near as critical as Jim Lampley, it is clear that Sergio Martinez, unless otherwise proven, is still the Middleweight Champion of the World. Nevertheless, Pirog scores an impressive stoppage win in a fight that Danny Jacobs was never really in to begin with, although the judges interestingly had the fight 3 rounds to 1 for Jacobs at the time of the stoppage. Needless to say, Jacobs was the American fighter who was being heavily promoted and supported by Golden Boy and HBO.

Daniel Jacobs 20-0(17KO’s) is tipped to become a new star, he has the full package and in his 21st outing since his debut in 2007 the 23 year old from Brooklyn, New York is about to start his legacy. So far he hasn’t failed to deliver, he hasn’t messed it up and he’s in a wide open Middleweight division. Is this the start of another great fighter, a new Pound-for-pound king, we will have to wait and see.

As it turns out, the Pirog-Jacobs fight could turn out to be even better than the main event of Diaz-Marquez.
