Is Haye the Hardest Hitter in Boxing?

haye434458By Nate Anderson: If this question was asked of me a couple of years ago, I probably would have selected Nigerian heavyweight Samuel Peter as being the biggest puncher in all of boxing, but right now I’m no longer so certain about that since David Haye has emerged front and center as perhaps the purest, most powerful puncher in all of boxing.

Tua vs. Cameron on June 6th

tua434543By Sean McDaniel: Former heavyweight challenger David Tua (49-3-1, 42 KOs) is going to continue his lengthy comeback on June 6th against heavyweight Shane Cameron (22-1, 19 KOs) in a 12-round bout in Auckland, New Zealand. Unbelievable as it may seem, Tua, now 36, started his comeback in 2005 after a two year lay off following a 12-round draw in a IBF title eliminator bout in 2003 against Hasim Rahman, and has only been active for seven fights in the past four years.

Is Tua Next For Arreola?

arreola4424.jpgBy Manuel Perez: After watching #7th ranked WBC heavyweight champion Chris Arreola (24-0, 21 KOs) make easy work of unbeaten heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon, stopping him in the 3rd round after the referee disqualified him due to his corner help entering the ring while Witherspoon was being given the standing eight count after being knocked down, Arreola moves on towards a possible fight with former heavyweight title challenger for later on this year. Tua, 35, has a fight against a yet to be determined opponent on July 12th, but if he comes out the winner of that fight, which most fully expect him to, this will set up a huge potential fight between the up and coming Arreola and Tua.

Arreola, only 27, has quickly proven himself as one of the best up and coming heavyweights in American, and perhaps in the entire world. He’s got everything you would want from a fighter – good size at 6’4″ 240 lbs, enormous power and a non-stop punching style of fighting, which he uses to batter his opponents into submission. While he doesn’t have true one-punch power or anything resembling that, the fact that he hits hard and constant, evens things out and makes him just as dangerous a puncher than he would be if he did have enormous power. He’s like a big hammer in the ring, one that pounds away at his opponents over and over again without stop.

Tua To Fight Arreola-Witherspoon Winner

tua464.jpgBy Jim Dower: Former heavyweight contender David Tua (49-3-1, 42 KOs) has recently snapped out of his lethargy with an agreement to fight the winner of the of the June 21st bout between young heavyweight contenders Chris Arreola and Chazz Witherspoon. The 35 year-old Tua perhaps has his eyes on a potential future title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter, which would make sense of Tua’s decision to fight the Arreola-Witherspoon winner. Arreola is currently ranked at #7 in the WBC, so a win against him would give Tua a big shot in the rankings and at the same time would make him a desirable future opponent for Peter – or whoever ends up on top in the division after Peter’s October bout with Vitali Klitschko.

For Tua’s sake, he better hope that Arreola emerges at the winner against Witherspoon, because if it’s Chazz that comes out on top, that’s not a fight that favors Tua’s style of fighting. Chazz would likely be able to use his long reach to jab into submission. Arreola, however, is a more of a crude slugger, who would come right at Tua, trying to take his head off with every punch. Despite his large 6’4” frame, Arreola tends to stand directly in front of them, often very close, which would allow for a shorter-armed puncher like Tua to land his bombs with great frequency. Arreola’s defense is also pretty average and that’s not a good thing against a fighter that punches as hard as Tua.

Tua KOs Fox!

tua35335353.jpgHeavyweight knockout artist David Tua (49-3-1, 42 KOs) destroyed a badly over matched Cerrone Fox (8-6, 8 KOs) in the 2nd round and in the process knocking him down three times on Friday night at the Soaring Eagle Casino, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Fox, 28, a fighter with a poor record, must have felt like he’d won the lottery by getting a shot at Tua. However, by the end of the fight he probably felt otherwise as he badly hurt in the first round by a big right hand from Tua. However, after hurting him, Tua backed off as if were toying with Fox in order to prolong his suffering for a while longer. Fox was able to get off some shots when Tua backed off, but he looked wild and dreadfully unskilled as a fighter, not so much different than the skill of a typical MMA fighter.

In the 2nd round, Tua was through play nice guy, as he opened up with cannon-like hooks to the body and head, using both hands. However, it was Tua’s left that did most of the damage, sending Fox down to the canvas three times in the round. After the 3rd knockdown, the referee stopped the bout due to Fox being badly shaken from the hook and unable to clear his head enough to continue further in the fight.

Tua and Rahman: Are They Still Capable of Winning a Heavyweight Title?

tua-rahman4643.jpgWith the recent comeback bouts for former two-time heavyweight boxing champion Hasim Rahman (43-6-2, 34 KOs) and one-time heavyweight challenger David Tua (49-3, 42 KOs), the question on the minds of most fans is whether either of them have a chance at winning a title given their relatively old age (both being 34-years old), their tendency for being overweight, and for choking in important bouts.

While both have been successful in winning their bouts since they’ve started their comebacks, neither of them have came close to fighting quality opposition, largely fighting sub par fighters that are made to order to look good against. Tua recently stopped a fighter named Cerrone Fox (8-6, 8 KOs) last Friday night, a fighter that that had no business being matched up with someone of Tua’s class.

Klitschko vs. Tua: Is David Next For Wladimir?

wladimir9864.jpgAccording to the latest boxing news from New Zealand’s Sunday News, former heavyweight challenger David Tua (48-3-1, 40 KOs) could possibly land a title shot against IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44 KOs) as early as the beginning of 2008. The arrangement involves some legal issues apparently between Tua’s promoter Cedric Kushner and Wladimir Klitschko’s promoter Shelly Finkel. By Wladimir choosing to fight Tua (currently ranked # 12 in the WBC), Kushner would drop the lawsuit, the New Zealand Sunday News reports.

As things stand, Tua has done little in recent years to warrant a shot at the heavyweight title. Since returning to boxing following a two year absence in 2005, Tua has fought and beaten six journeyman-type fighters, none of which are ranked in the top 10. In all but one of them, his most recent bout against Saul Montana in August 2007, Tua has showed few signs of his former knockout form from 1992-2001.
