Sanchez expects Lemieux to be careful against Golovkin

golovkin63By Dan Ambrose: IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) has a reputation of starting quickly in his fights and going out looking for fast knockouts. With his big power in either hand, Lemieux frequently is able to score early knockouts or knockdowns in his fights.

Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), suspects that Lemieux will be told to take it easy and not try and slug with Golovkin early on when they face each other on October 17th on HBO pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Roman Gonzalez added to Golovkin-Lemieux undercard

gonzalez5(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten WBC flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) has reportedly been added to the undercard of the October 17th fight card headlined by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin vs. IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Gonzalez’s opponent isn’t yet known at this time. The options aren’t that great though. The fighters that they’re looking at to pick Gonzalez’s opponent for the card is 33-year-old former light flyweight champion Giovani Segura (32-4-1, 28 KOs) and McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs). Brian Viloria had said to be interested in the fight, but he’s not the one that they’re looking at for this fight.

Nobody knows Golovkin in America, says Angel Garcia

golovkin64By Dan Ambrose: Angel Garcia, the trainer/father for former WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia, doesn’t see what the fuss is all about with U.S boxing fan’s interest in WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Angel thinks that only people at HBO know about Golovkin. American boxing fans don’t have any idea who Golovkin is, says Angel.

Angel basically sees Golovkin as an unproven fighter who hasn’t faced the guys necessary for there to be so much hype about him. Further, Angel thinks that Golovkin hasn’t done enough to rate a fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. He thinks that Golovkin needs to prove himself worthy of getting a fight against Cotto before getting a fight against him.

De La Hoya says he wants Golovkin-Lemieux winner to face Cotto-Canelo winner

golovkin9999(Photo credit: Will Hart, K2 Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that when he made the fight between his fighter IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for October 17th, he made it with the thought in mind to have a mini-middleweight tournament with the winner of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight to face the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

De La Hoya says if he gets his way, there will be an ultimate winner of those fights. However, De La Hoya has no control over Cotto, who is promoted by Roc Nation Sports, and it’s unclear whether Cotto will choose to face the Golovkin-Lemieux winner if he gets past Canelo.

Loeffler is glad Lemieux willing to face Golovkin

golovkin5623By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is extremely pleased that IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions have elected to face him on October 17th on HBO pay-per-view.

Golovkin has been waiting for a big money fight against one of the top middleweights for the last three years since he started staging his fights in the United States. It took until now for one of the top fighters in the division to step up and face him. It’s sad that the top guys like Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs, Peter Quillin and Andy Lee hasn’t shown interest in facing him, but it kind of tells you what certain fighters are content with picking fights rather than facing the top guys.

Golovkin-Lemieux will bring in between 350,000 and 500,000 PPV buys, says De La Hoya

golovkinBy Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs), isn’t expecting his October 17th unification fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) to bring in over 1 million pay-per-view buys on HBO PPV. De La Hoya feels that the fight isn’t big enough to bring in that many buys.

Instead, De La Hoya expects it to bring in 350,000 to 500,000 buys on HBO pay-per-view. Those are good numbers, and very similar to what Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto have been doing when they’re the A-level fighter in their pay-per-view fights.

Golden Boy undecided about Lemieux vs. Golovkin fight

lemieux74By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions are still trying to make a decision whether they should let their fighter IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a unification match this year.

Golden Boy has more than one options for the 26-year-old Lemieux as far as money bouts where he can do well financially. The least best option is to have Lemieux defend his title against the winner of the Tureano Johnson vs. Eamonn O’Kane fight, because that’s not a fight that will bring Lemieux much money, and it bring him a lot of risk.

De La Hoya interested in Golovkin-Lemieux fight

lemieux665By Dan Ambrose: IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux’s promoters Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger promotions are both interested in potentially setting up a unification fight between Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for the 26-year-old Lemieux’s next fight.

Lemieux has a mandatory defense due against the winner of the Tureano Johnson vs. Eamonn O’Kane IBF 160lb eliminator bout, but Lemieux can bypass that fight by facing Golovkin instead. The IBF has already said the unification match between Golovkin and Lemieux can take place next.

Is Lemieux being saved for Canelo by Golden Boy?

lemieux665By Dan Ambrose: After David Lemieux’s recent 12 round decision win over Hassan N’Dam (31-2, 18 KOs) to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title on June 20th last month, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya ruled out any chance of Lemieux immediately fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a unification fight.

De La Hoya’s reasoning for dismissing the fight was because Lemieux had a mandatory defense due for his newly won IBF title. In other words, the IBF wouldn’t allow Lemieux to face Golovkin even if he wanted to.
