Will Canelo fight Liam Smith or Lemieux in September?

canelo5666

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez said this week that he’ll be talking with Gennady Golovkin’s management this Monday to see if a fight between GGG and Golden Boy fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is something they would see as beneficial for September.

It’s thought by many fans that Golden Boy won’t let the popular Canelo take the fight against Golovkin this year because of the potential of him getting roasted and plucked clean by the Kazakhstan fighter. If Golden Boy doesn’t let Canelo fight Golovkin (or if Canelo doesn’t want the fight himself), then the likely two candidates for Canelo to fight is WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) or former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs).

Weights: Canelo 155, Khan 155

khan873By Jim Dower: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) both made weight today at their weigh-in for Saturday’s fight on HBO PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A very drained looking Canelo weighed in at 155lbs, and looked like he had worked hard to take weight off for the 155lb catch-weight. For his part, Khan also came in at 155lbs. Khan looked like he was at his fighting weight already. Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter said he expects Khan to be at 160 or 161 tomorrow night, which means we’ll only see Khan rehydrate five to six pounds. Canelo is expected to rehydrate into the 170s, possibly 180.

Lemieux impressed with Golovkin’s power

Image: Lemieux impressed with Golovkin's powerBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) believes IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) is a very hard puncher, but not the hardest puncher in the 160lb division. Lemieux disagrees with former world title challenger Curtis Stevens (27-5, 20 KOs), who said this week that he doesn’t think Golovkin is a hard puncher at all.

Stevens sparred with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to help him get ready for his fight last November against Miguel Cotto, and he came away impressed with Canelo’s power more so than Golovkin. However, Stevenson was stopped by Golovkin in the 8th round in their fight in November 2013, so that tells you that Golovkin hits hard enough to make Stevens quit.

David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia this Saturday on HBO PPV

Image: David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia this Saturday on HBO PPV(Photo Credit: Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 Kos) will be looking to turn his career around this Saturday night against junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs) in a 10 round fight in the co-feature bout on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view at 9:00 p.m. ET at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lemieux will have a big size advantage over Tapia, and this fight figures to be a mismatch. Tapia hasn’t fought an entire year since his 4th round knockout loss to Michel Soro last year in May 2015. The fact Tapia hasn’t fought in 12 months makes you wonder about his love for the sport. Normally see older fighters taking long breaks after losses, not young fighters like Tapia. If Tapia loses on Saturday night, then I won’t be surprised if we see him disappear for another extended break from the sport.

De La Hoya: Lemieux-Tapia winner could face Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya revealed earlier today that the winner of the May 7th fight between former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) and junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs) could be in line to face WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in the future at some point. It would be an impossible situation for Lemieux to fight Canelo in his special weight class of 155lbs. Lemieux couldn’t even make the recent catch-weight of 163lbs for his last fight. How is he going to melt down to Canelo’s 155lb weight division?

Judging by how things went for Lemieux in his recent fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, you would have to think that the fight will be taking place soon. Golden Boy can’t afford to wait too long before they match Lemieux with Canelo.

Canelo-Khan undercard fights

canelo945By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is stacking the undercard for the May 7 Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view. They were unable to get the heavyweight match-up between interim WBA champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz vs. Alexander Ustinov. The undercard is a mixed bag with the wrong guys fighting each other, and in the case of David Lemieux, he’s fight a junior middleweight rather than a middleweight in Glen Tapia. How do you have a PPV card on HBO where the first two fights involve fighters facing smaller guys in what appear to be mismatches? That just strikes me as wrong. Lemieux should have been put in with Curtis Stevens, and Canelo should be fighting at least a middleweight.

Nevertheless, they were able to get the following fights: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia, welterweight Mauricio Herrera vs. Frankie Gomez, and former middleweight world title challenger Curtis Stevens vs. Patrick Teixeira.

David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia added to Canelo-Khan card

lemieux33332By Dan Ambrose: A week after failing to make weight for his 163lb catch-weight fight against James De Lara Rosa, former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) has been added to the May 7 fight card headlined by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) vs. Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs).

Lemieux, 27, will be fighting the struggling junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs), who is coming off of a 4th round knockout loss to Michel Soro last May. De La Rosa says 40% offer was never made by Lemieux’s management

Image: De La Rosa says 40% offer was never made by Lemieux's managementBy Jeff Aranow: James De La Rosa was supposed to face former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux tonight in a 10 round fight at the Olympia in Montreal, Canada. However, Lemieux came in overweight last Friday at the weigh-in for the fight. He was supposed to weigh 163lbs for the catch-weight, but he came in at 165.6lbs.

Unfortunately, De La Rosa and Lemieux’s management were unable to negotiate to have the fight go ahead. The fight was then cancelled. There were reports from the Montreal Gazette that Lemieux’s management offered De La Rosa a 40% increase with his purse.
