Performances that had led the Namibian phenom to a ring record of 23 wins, no loses, 17 knockouts and two world titles in both the 154lb and 160lb divisions. Unfortunately the moniker would spill over into Harry Simon’s life outside the ropes. By the time Simon had captured his second world title in 2002 he was already responsible for the premature deaths of two motorists on account of his reckless driving.

The news was flabbergasting to those of us who had cheered on his every punch the previous summer in Beijing in Sutherland’s quest for Olympic gold. Darren would take home the bronze, falling just short to eventual gold medallist James Degale.

Sutherland, 27, the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist for Ireland, found himself in a much tougher fight than he perhaps expected to get and was hit often by the taller 6’0” Rasalev.

sutherland343By Nate Anderson: 2008 Olympic middleweight Bronze Medal winner for Ireland Darren Sutherland (3-0, 3 KOs) put on an impressive punching display in stopping Georgian Vepkhia Tchilaia (9-10, 5 KOs) in the 4th round on Friday night at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex, Stoke, Staffordshire. Sutherland, 27, was much too strong for Tchilaia, battering him at will for three rounds until referee John Keane stepped in and stopped the bout at 1:24 of the 4th round.

Having dominated the first two rounds with single power shots to the body and head, Sutherland suddenly opened up with devastating combinations in the 3rd round and was landing with authority until referee Phil Edwards decided that he had seen enough and stepped in and halted the fight at 0:26 of the 3rd round.

Sutherland, 26, an Olympian for the Irish team in the 2008 Olympics, staggered Iliev with a big right hand late in the round, prompting for referee David Irving to stop the bout at 2:42 of the 1st round.
