Rafael wants Mayweather to fight Danny Garcia next

garcia675By Dan Ambrose: If ESPN’s Dan Rafael gets his way, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) will be facing WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia next in May rather than Adrien Broner, Amir Khan, Devon Alexander or Marcos Maidana. Rafael thinks Garcia is an exciting fighter and the most qualified to be facing Mayweather fight now due to his wins over a past his prime Erik Morales, as well as his wins over Amir Khan, and Lucas Matthysse.

Rafael said to ESPN “Garcia has shown he can rise to the occasion. Maybe, just maybe, he could do it again against Mayweather…Garcia is an exciting fighter…Garcia has earned his opportunity more than the other candidates under consideration to challenge for Mayweather’s welterweight crown.”

Mayweather Sr. doesn’t see Danny Garcia as having any chance against Floyd Jr.

garcia65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. isn’t giving WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) any chance at all in beating his son Floyd Jr. if Garcia turns out to be the one that Floyd Jr. fights next May. That’s something that will be determined based on the outcome of the Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander fight.

Garcia defeated Lucas Matthysse last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision to put himself in position for the fight with Mayweather, but Garcia also shot himself in the foot by making his win over Matthysse a boring one by running and holding for 12 rounds instead of fighting. That could dash Garcia’s chances of fighting Mayweather because he doesn’t like to fight opponents that hold and run like Garcia did with Matthysse.

Why Danny Garcia is a suitable foe for Floyd Mayweather Jr.

garcia7672After the final bell of Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez rung, the search was on for Floyd’s next foe come Cinco de Mayo weekend 2014. Everyone from 160 to 147 were willing to put their bid in on the Floyd sweepstakes. Even light heavyweight titlist Bernard Hopkins stated he can make 160 for Floyd. But when it came to Danny Garcia, who had a career win against Lucas Matthysse before the Canelo fight, most people disregard the thought.

The reason being Garcia is too small for Floyd. Floyd just made a statement with the Canelo victory that size alone isn’t going to beat him. And just remember that Floyd is a small welterweight. He stated in the post-fight interview that he woke up fight day weighing 146. Most junior welters put on 10 to 15 pounds after the weigh-in before the fight.

Fans want Mayweather to fight Pacquiao, Danny Garcia or Broner next

canelo84By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao may have lost his last 2 fights and could lose his next bout on November 2rd, but boxing fans still want to see him face Floyd Mayweather Jr. next May. In a poll conducted by ESPN, Pacquiao was the overwhelming choice for Mayweather to fight next at 60%. The next highest opponent picked was Danny Garcia at 18% followed by Adrien Broner at 10% and Miguel Cotto at 5%. Amir Khan, Devon Alexander and Lucas Matthysse weren’t included in the poll.

Pacquiao would be a good opponent for Mayweather to fight next, but with Pacquiao still being promoted by Top Rank, it’s likely that Pacquiao and Mayweather will never face each other in the ring. It’s too bad because it would still be an interesting fight to see how Mayweather would deal with Pacquiao’s speed, power and high work rate.

Don’t believe the hype Part II—Matthysse fell

matthysse766By Ken Woods: The hip hop group Public Enemy made the phrase “don’t believe the hype” popular during the late 80s. This phrase can apply to many aspects of life and sports, especially the boxing ring.

Many in the boxing community, however, did not take heed to these words and believed the hype surrounding Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) was real. I, however, correctly predicted his hype train would be derailed at the hands of Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s), and the performance Garcia displayed last Saturday night made my words prophetic.

Matthysse confirms rematch with Danny Garcia has already been arranged

matthysse3564By Franco Ranzoni: Lucas Matthysse arriving back home in Argentina has immediately confirmed to the Argentine media that a rematch with WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia has already been discussed. “A date” he says “is still being worked out.” This comes as outstanding news for any boxing fan out there who witnessed what could be described as the one of the best fights–if not the best– of 2013.

For 12 rounds the two champions exchanged blows that would have probably knocked out most other fighters out there. These two, however, took every devastating blow, and returned them with interest. Matthysse vs Garcia looks destined to become our generation’s Gatti vs Ward.

The Rabid Crowds

canelo7677by Jordan Capobianco: The rabid crowds liked it when Lucas Matthysse knocked people out. They wanted to see him knock more people out. They wanted to see him knock Danny Garcia out. They thought he could because he had knocked lots of people out before, and they were seduced by his ability to do it.

But then he didn’t knock out Danny Garcia.

And the rabid crowds remembered that Garcia was a masterful, undefeated champion. And they remembered that no fighter has ever been able to compensate for Garcia’s left hand. And they looked at Matthysse’s right eye and it was almost poetic. And seeing the poetry of the experience, some were less rabid.

Matthysse didn’t deserve Danny Garcia’s belts

matthysse564By Idol: I’ve been following Lucas Matthysse’s career since the before the Devon Alexander and Zab Judah upsets. I know what he is capable of, and where he lacks fundamentals. Believe me, my heart was shattered as I watched Lucas get beaten last Saturday night by WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 26 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. I’m not going to make excuses for Matthysse. The fact of the matter is Matthysse clearly didn’t deserve the belt.

Garcia (who I actually despise) not only prepared well, but he fought the PERFECT fight against Matthysse. Both fighters were looking to take away each other’s biggest threat. The big difference was Garcia landed the match defining shot first. By taking away Matthysse’s eye (luck or not), the fight became a desperate race against time for Lucas. Funny thing is Matthysse seemed to have the better game plan from the start. He was attacking Garcia at awkward angles that were leaving Garcia in awkward positions.

Danny Garcia “Low Blows” Matthysse!

garcia564By R.Amin: Last night was a disappointing night in boxing. I waited for the Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthyese fight for months. I thought it was going to be a great night of boxing making history but boy was I wrong. One one side, there was Danny Garcia, a somewhat decent slugger, known mostly from his loud-mouthed dad for his useless rants. I always thought Danny was a b-rated fighter. Danny, however, did surprise me when he KO’ed Amir Khan. On the other side, there was this emerging star name Lucas Matthysse, a very humble fighter with enormous power.

From the pre-fight buildup, we seen Danny’s dad Angel Garcia over the top behavior disrespecting the Argentinian people with his corny patriotic comments. Not surprisingly, this behavior was seen before when his son fought Amir Khan, with his dad’s rants. Boxing world was interested to see if his son Danny can back it all up after all the trash talk.

Danny Garcia doesn’t deserve Mayweather fight after clinch-filled win over Matthysse

GarciaMatthysse_Hoganphotos1(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) could have put himself in the drivers’ seat for a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) next May on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, but Garcia’s clinch-filled 12 round unanimous decision win over Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, wasn’t the kind of performance that will likely lead to a Mayweather fight.

The Garcia-Matthysse fight was thought ahead of time to potentially be the best fight on the card, but thanks to Garcia’s constant holding and running, it turned out to be the worst fight by far of the night.
