Is Angulo Too Slow To Be Champion?

angulo22211By David Lahr: Light middleweight Alfredo Angulo (15-0, 12 KOs) opened some eyes on Saturday night in the process of taking out veteran Cosme Rivera in the 5th at the BankAtlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida. Angulo showed crushing power in hurting Rivera on a number of occasions in rounds three and five, eventually battering him until the fight was stopped in the 5th. The referee Telis Assimenios waited way too long before stepping in and stopping the fight, letting poor Rivera get hit with far too many shots if you ask me.

Angulo Squares Off With Rivera In Big Test

By Dave Lahr: Unbeaten light middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs) is an old fashioned Mexican fighter, a fighter that is similar to a bigger version of Julio Cesar Chavez and who likes to beat his opponents down with one big blockbuster shot after another. Tonight, Angulo finds himself in with veteran Cosme Rivera (31-11-2, 22 KOs) at the BankAtlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida. Maybe Rivera has been in with fighters with better skills – speed, movement, jab and punch arsenal – than Angulo, but few if any have the work rate, and heart that he brings with him into the ring.

Rivera Stops Pinzon

rivera46433.jpgBy John Dower: Tough Mexican welterweight Cosme Rivera (31-11-2, 22 KOs) stopped Colombian Raul Pinzon (15-2, 14 KOs) in the 8th round on Friday night to win the World Boxing Association Fedecentro welterweight title at the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, in Miami, Florida. Rivera, 31, known mostly for his losses to Andre Berto, Julio Joel, and Zab Judah, landed a perfect left-right combination in the 8th round of the fight, sending Pinzon to the canvas. Blood pouring from a cut over his left eye, Pinzon, badly hurt, attempted to get to his feet, but was counted out by the referee at 2:00 of the round.

In the first two rounds of the fight, Rivera used a constant jab to keep the hard-punching Pinzon at a distance. From the outside, River picked his spots to land right hand shots against the plodding Pinzon. For his part, despite his large percentage of knockout victories on his record, Pinzon had fought almost entirely fighters with losing records. Against Rivera, he was essentially overmatched from the first minute of the fight. Only rarely did Pinzon land anything in the first two rounds, mostly circling the ring and trying to prevent getting nailed by Rivera.
