Was Chris John’s retirement 4 years overdue?

john6By Chris Williams: Former WBA featherweight champion Chris John (48-1-3, 22 KO’s) announced his retirement from boxing this week after a long 15-year pro career. The 34-year-old John had recently been stopped in the 6th round by Simpiwe Vetyeka on December 6th of this month in a fight where he was batted around the ring until getting stopped.

John held the WBA featherweight title from 2003-2009, at which point the World Boxing Association upgraded him to Super Champion. This was the same year where John had fought a controversial 12 round draw against Rocky Juarez in Houston, Texas. Not too many people who saw that fight agreed with the decision. In fact, next to no one thought John deserved that fight. However, John was able to beat Juarez, who should have been an easy opponent for him, by a 12 round decision in their rematch seven months later in September of 2009.

Simpiwe Vetyeka stops Chris John

john6By Chris Williams: In WBA Super World featherweight champion Chris John (48-1-3, 22 KO’s) was beaten for the first time in his long 15-year pro career last Saturday night in losing to #14 WBA fringe contender Simpiwe Vetyeka (26-2, 16 KO’s) by a 7th round stoppage at the Metro City, Northbridge, Western Australia, Australia. The 34-year-old John failed to come out for the 7th round after having been knocked staggered and knocked down in the 6th round by a series of huge right hands from Vetyeka.

John had been hurt in the 5th round from a right hand from Vetyeka that hooked around to the back of John’s head that put him out on his feet. John was somehow able to make it out of the 5th, but he was in bad shape for the 6th. He still didn’t look recovered from the blow, and he also looked very tired and old. At 34, John looked old and not the same fighter who had been given a controversial win over Juan Manuel Marquez and a controversial draw against Rocky Juarez in his youth.

Can Abner Mares compete with Rigondeaux and Chris John?

mares56By Gerardo Granados: The newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (W26-L0-Dl) is only 27 years old and already has conquered world titles in three different weight divisions. The young lion has defeated good opposition to achieve it, but what kind of potential does he have?

The 5´4 1/2” height and 66” reach young lion is the third youngest Mexican fighter to achieve three divisional world titles behind Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Erik Morales.

“Terrible” is a future hall of fame member but he never reached the heights of Julio Cesar even though that he did had a special charisma and a big fan base.

Nonito Donaire vs. Chris John being discussed for March or April 2013 in Asia

john453445By Chris Williams: Instead of WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) taking on the dangerous and highly skilled counter puncher WBA super bantamweight chanmpion Guillermo Rigondeaux next in a toss-up fight, Donaire could end up facing WBA Super World featherweight champion Chris John (48-0-2, 22 KO’s) next in a fight that could be staged in Asia someplace, according to Steve Kim.

Kim said on his twitter: “Would anyone be opposed to a fight between Nonito Donaire and Chris John at 126? I hear that’s being discussed #boxing. Word is that the next Donaire fight could take place somewhere in Asia like Macau (which would be a dream for Arum).”

Cotto-Martinez, John-Gamboa a possibility for 2011 – News

Image: Cotto-Martinez, John-Gamboa a possibility for 2011 - NewsBy Chris Williams: The negotiations for a fight between World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and WBA junior middleweight Miguel Cotto are still alive, according to examiner.com. However, if the fight does get made, it won’t be until fall next year after Cotto has already fought someone like Antonio Margarito. By that time, it might not be as nearly as an interesting fight as it is now. The reason is simple. If Cotto takes another pounding from Margarito, which is very possible given how Margarito took Cotto apart last time they fought in 2008, Cotto’s stock will drop off in a huge way.
