Rios: Pacquiao should fight Golovkin or Canelo

Image: Rios: Pacquiao should fight Golovkin or Canelo

By Chris Williams: Brandon Rios says that Manny Pacquiao needs to either retire from boxing or move up in weight to fight middleweights Gennady “GGG” Golovkin or Saul Canelo Alvarez. Rios thinks that Pacquiao has been fighting for too long of a time, and he’s already fought everyone there is to fight. Rios doubts that the boxing fans want to see Pacquiao fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. again, because they already saw it and won’t pay for it a second time.

There’s not much chance of Mayweather Jr. fighting Pacquiao again. That’s not going to happen. Mayweather seems to be enjoying his retirement from boxing. He’s not going to come back and deal with another training camp, even though he could probably still make a lot of money in that fight.

Brandon Rios vs. Victor Ortiz in February

rios0000

By Dan Ambrose: Struggling former world champions Brandon Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) will be facing each other on February 4 at a still to be determined venue in Los Angeles, California. A lot of boxing fans see the 30-year-old Rios and Ortiz as shot fighters.

This should be a good fight with a possible sudden ending. It might bring decent ratings. However, in the big scheme of thing, it doesn’t mean the winner will go anything spectacular. Knowing how boxing is run, I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of the Rios-Ortiz fight gets an undeserved title shot against one of the welterweight world champions.

Canelo can out-box Golovkin says Rios

canelo6427

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios believes that Golden Boy Promotions franchise fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can beat middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if he chooses to box him from the outside, move around, and do what Kell Brook did last September against Triple G. Rios thinks that Golovkin would have problems with Canelo if he boxes him. However, if Canelo tries to stand and trade with Golovkin, he expects the Kazakhstan fighter to win by a knockout, because he believes that he’s stronger and more physical than Canelo.

Right now it’s still unknown if Golovkin and Canelo will ever face each other. Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for Canelo, says they’ll fight next year in September, but he also says that Golovkin will need to agree to the eight-figure flat fee offer he made to him in order to get the fight. Golovkin wants a percentage deal. Without a percentage deal, there won’t be a fight.

Arum working hard at promoting Crawford vs. Postol

arum96

By Jeff Aranow: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is hoping for success on Saturday night for his Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arum’s major problem is that the Crawford-Postol fight is on HBO pay-per-view, and unfortunately neither of these guys is PPV worthy fighters.

Crawford, 28, is from a Omaha, Nebraska, a small town with a population of only 600,000. Postol is from Ukraine. The Crawford vs. Postol fight is going for $49.99 on PPV in the U.S, and that’s a lot of money to spend for a fight that really should be either on regular HBO or better yet on free television on one of the free network channels.

The reaction on the various internet boxing forums from fans about whether they will be purchasing the Crawford-Postol card on PPV has been largely negative.

Rios: Brook is never going to win against Golovkin

Rios_BD7F2024

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios is giving welterweight Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) no chance at all in beating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in their fight on September 10.

Rios thinks that Golovkin is too much of a beast for Brook to have a chance at beating him. Rios sees the fight being won on size along due to Brook moving up from the welterweight division to take on Golovkin. Rios thinks the size and power difference between the two of them will be too much for Brook to overcome.

Porter wants Garcia, Berto or Rios, Molina or Provodnikov

By Allan Fox: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) is hoping WBA World 147lb belt holder Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) will give him a rematch so that he can avenge his 12 round unanimous decision loss from June 25. Thurman is Porter’s No.1 target for his next fight if he can get it. However, if Porter can’t get a second fight against Thurman right away, he’d like to get a fight against one of the following fighters: Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Brandon Rios, John Molina or Ruslan Provodnikov.

Porter can be back inside the ring within the next three months, according to his trainer/father Kenny Porter. That’s an incredibly quick turnaround for a fighter that took as much punishment as Porter did.

Brandon Rios wants Victor Ortiz fight

rios0000

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs) says he’d like to fight Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs), because he says he’s been talking mess about him. Rios, 30, wants to pay him back by beating him in the ring. Ortiz was last seen in April in getting stopped in the 4th round by Andre Berto at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It would be good to see Ortiz return to the ring to fight Rios, because both fighters’ careers are presently on the rocks right now. An overweight 170 pound Rios was stopped in the 9th round by Tim Bradley last November in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bradley dropped Rios twice with hard body shots in that round to get the stoppage.

Cotto interested in fighting Brandon Rios

rios100By Dan Ambrose: According to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) contacted him to discuss a possible fight against the recently knocked out Brandon Rios (33-3, 24 KOs), says Dan Rafael. Arum reached out to Rios’ manager to see if there was any interest in a fight against the 35-year-old Cotto, but they were not interested.

You can’t blame the 29-year-old Rios for not agreeing to fight Cotto because it would have been a terrible mismatch. Cotto needs an opponent for his June 18 fight from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If Cotto is looking in the direction of Rios or fighters of that quality, it shows you what Cotto is looking for in an opponent.

Arum talks Brandon Rios and Gilberto Ramirez

arum4By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he was able to get WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs) to agree to come to the U.S to fight his fighter Gilberto Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs) by making him an offer he can’t refuse.

Arum needs the 24-year-old Ramirez to defeat Abraham in order to turn him into a star. Abraham and Ramirez will be fighting on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 3 card on April 9 on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s unclear how much money it cost the 84-year-old Arum to get Abraham to agree to come over from Germany to take the fight with Ramirez. Abraham normally doesn’t fight outside of his home country of Germany.

Brandon Rios no longer with Robert Garcia

rios0000By Dan Ambrose: In something of a surprise, the Top Rank promoted former WBA lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs) has split with trainer Robert Garcia after years of being trained by him. Garcia revealed the news today on his Instagram. It’s unclear what led up to the two of them parting ways.

Rios, 29, is in bad shape in terms of his career outlook after his recent embarrassing 9th round knockout loss to WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley last November in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rios briefly retired after his loss to Bradley. The retirement didn’t last long, as he came back last week and said he was going to be resuming his pro career.
