The curious case of Andre Dirrell

dirrell212By Jamie Eskdale: Back in 2009 two young American fighters by the name of Andre looked certain to take the super middleweight division by storm. They both entered the super 6 boxing classic tournament with high expectations of becoming the finest super middleweight on the planet. Andre Ward would accomplish this dream looking untouchable, but what has happened to Andre Dirrell?

Dirrell was a gifted amateur qualifying to compete at the 2004 Olympics by winning the AIBA American Olympic qualifying tournament. He would then go on and give a good account of himself at the Olympics, winning bronze at the 2004 Athens games.

Mayweather stays calm as Ruben Guerrero trash talks him at final press conference

YouTube video
By Dan Ambrose: Ruben Guerrero, the father for WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), completely took over the final press conference and trash talked a very calm Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) for what seemed like forever earlier today.

Even when Oscar De La Hoya was trying to move in to cut off Ruben’s long rant, he continued to try and goad Mayweather into an argument. It didn’t work because Mayweather stood there impassively, not moved by Ruben’s trash talking.

Burns not worried about Jose Gonzalez’s power

burns4534By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is flying blind going into his title defense this month against unbeaten #1 WBO Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) on May 11th at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Burns, 30, has seen very little of Gonzalez’s fights because there’s so little footage out there for him.

This means that Burns is stepping into the unknown against the hard hitting Puerto Rican Gonzalez, and that’s not what you want when you’re a light puncher like Burns because Gonzalez has the kind of power where he can take the judges out of the picture by knocking Burns out and rendering Burns’ hometown advantage meaningless.

Hughie Fury vs. Dean Storey on May 11th in New Brunswick, Canada

fury433By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (2-0, 2 KO’s) will be returning to the ring this month on May 11th against 45-year-old journeyman Dean Storey (8-16-2, 4 KO’s) in a scheduled four round bout at the Festival Arena, Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada.

Fury, the 18-year-old cousin of heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, is following in his footsteps or at least trying to. A little bit shorter at a listed 6’6” rather than 6’7”, Hughie is pretty much the same kind of heavyweight as Tyson Fury, but with a much better jab, better ring movement, better defensive skills and a superior left hook and right hand.

Mayweather likes Guerrero’s grappling skills

guerrero2453By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) isn’t too impressed with the talent of his opponent Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), but he does see him as a good grappler, someone that can get in there and wrestle and rough you up.

However, Mayweather doesn’t see Guerrero as a high quality fighter judging by how he struggled to beat Michael Katsidis, Joel Casamayor and Selcuk Aydin.

Mayweather said to RingTV “I seen him when he fought Andre Berto, and he done what he had to do. He was a good grappler…Casamayor going the distance with him at 40…or the fact that he had a dogfight with Katsidis.”

Haye looking to KO Charr on June 29th in Manchester

haye45234By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) is looking to score a knockout to get his wide-bodied opponent Manuel Charr (23-1, 13 KO’s) out of there as well as possible in their fight on June 29th in Manchester, UK.

Haye, 32, doesn’t to let Charr hang around and maybe get lucky and pull off a knockout of his own. As bad as Charr is as a fighter, he still could cause Haye problems if he lets him hang around for too long.

Froch-Kessler: Carl will need the perfect game plan to keep from getting beat

froch45445By Scott Gilfoid: We saw how Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) was thoroughly out-boxed by Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) the last time the two fought each other in 2010. Froch couldn’t do anything right. When he tried to box, Kessler took the fight to him and forced him to eat jabs, left hooks and right hands for a main course.

When Froch tried to get back in the fight in the last four rounds, Kessler got the better of him in their exchanges. Froch was like a kid who had procrastinated until the last minute with his homework assignment in the way he tried to get back in the fight.
