Canelo vs. Cotto: Is this a PPV worthy fight?

canelo67By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants to match their prize WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) against 32-year-old Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) on September 14th on the Mexican Independence holiday for Canelo’s first pay per view bout of his career, if Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t want to fight the light heavyweight-sized Canelo in September.

Cotto, who hasn’t fought since December in losing to Austin Trout, reportedly is interested in facing Canelo for the right price.

Arum not sure if Chavez Jr. can make 160 for August fight

chavez675By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will either fight at 160 or 165 lbs. for his next fight on August 3rd against either Martin Murray or Brian Vera. The choice of opponent will depend on whether Chavez Jr. can get down to 160 lbs. or not.

If he can boil down to 160, then Martin Murray will be the choice. If not, then it’ll be Vera.

Burns’ promoter: No rematch for Gonzalez

By Scott Gilfoid: If you were hoping to see a mouth-watering rematch between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) and Puerto Rican fighter Jose Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KO’s) you can forget it because Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn closed the door tight and locked it by saying “No,” when asked if he’d be willing to put Burns back in with the hard hitting Gonzalez.

Deontay Wilder – Does Golden Boy know something that we don’t?

deontay11By Tony Crooks: Something very strange just occurred to me; Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) are touting unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) as the next heavyweight champion. They say his punching power is phenomenal. They say that as soon as he hits anyone with his right hand that they will be knocked out.

Now here is my point, GBP have invested a lot of money in Wilder, training camps, travel, accommodation, trainers and corner men, all have to be paid. This all comes to a lot of money.

Devon Alexander vs. Lee Purdy this Saturday, May 18th in Atlantic City, New Jersey

alexander342By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night, IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) will be defending his title against replacement opponent #4 IBF Lee Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Purdy, 25, is replacing the unbeaten #1 IBF Kell Brook, who suffered one too many injuries to his lower extremities causing him to lose out on the opportunity to get the fight.

They finally had to replace Brook with Purdy in order to avoid Alexander using up an entire year of his career waiting for Brook to stop getting injured in training camp. Who honestly knows how long Alexander would have had to wait before he finally got Brook in the ring.

Bellew vs. Chilemba II: Will Isaac get a fair shake in the rematch?

bellew44By Scott Gilfoid: Last March we saw #3 WBC 175 contender Isaac Chilemba (20-1-2, 9 KO’s) put on a defensive clinic in dominating #1 WBC Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12 KO’s) for 12 rounds and then ending up with 12 round draw for his efforts in their fight at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

For boxing fans who don’t know, Bellew is from Liverpool and Chilemba is from South Africa. I still can’t forget how Bellew was trying to convince Chilemba after the fight that he had done enough to win. Bellew even told Chilemba that his own trainer had said that Bellew won. It was quite sad and actually kind of pathetic to see Bellew melting down like this. He was a kid who hadn’t got his way and he was going to pout about it.

Chisora should come to U.S to fight Deontay Wilder

chisora45By Scott Gilfoid: The proposed June 15th fight between American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 Ko’s) and British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) may not happen for a number of reasons, one of which is Deontay’s legal issues stemming from his May 4th arrest in Las Vegas, Nevada for domestic battery.

It’s unclear whether Deontay can travel outside of the U.S next month with that issue still not having been taken care of. However, that doesn’t mean that Chisora can’t come to the U.S to fight Deontay if Chisora and his promoter Frank Warren really want the fight that badly.

Burns to be back in September in likely voluntary defense

burns453By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn ruled out a rematch against the hard-hitting Jose Gonzalez last night after Burns dodged a bullet in beating him on an injury stoppage after the 9th round in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hearn wants Burns to fight in September in Glasgow. He didn’t mention who the opponent will be, but it seems pretty obvious that they’ll go soft with a nice bottom dwelling contender for Burns’ voluntary defense.

It makes a ton of sense for Burns to fight Gonzalez again because when you get dominated for the first seven rounds of the fight like Burns was; it tells you that his skills just weren’t matching up well with Gonzalez.

Rios: I was picked for Pacquiao because I lost my last fight

rios343By Chris Williams: Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) figures that the only reason he was given a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) on November 24th this year is because Rios is coming off of a loss to Mike Alvarado in a fight that he didn’t look good in last March.

Rios said to the bostonherald.com “He [Pacquiao] picked me because I lost. They probably think ‘Brandon is easy to hit. Brandon gets hit all the time.’ It’s a very different story when you get in the ring with me…they made a mistake picking me.”
