The undefeated heavyweights, bright futures or inevitable declines?

fury43323By Scott Bells: It says a lot when promoters have to pad out fighters records to ensure they remain unbeaten simply due to the fact that the two who sit at the top of the tree (The Klitschkos) are so much better than the rest.

This is what, in my opinion, many promoters are doing as there is clearly a number of grades of fighters in the heavyweight division; some can make it to the top and others will not recover from the inevitable first career loss that most, if not all, will suffer to a Klitschko or a Haye type on the way through.
Let’s break them down…..

Kessler: Froch’s power won’t help him on May 25th

kessler434By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) isn’t worried about IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s long reach or big power in their fight on May 25th.

Kessler plans on whipping Froch just like he did three years ago when he got the better of him in the Super Six tournament in Herning, Denmark.

Kessler was able to get inside Froch’s long reach and pound him with accurate combinations that had Froch reeling each time the two would come together for an exchange.

Pacquiao-Rios will have 5-city promo tour in China, then New York and Los Angeles

pac555By Chris Williams: Top Rank plans on having a 5-city promotional tour to hype Manny Pacquiao’s November 23rd fight against Brandon Rios in Macau, China. According to Steve Kim, the 5-city tour will include cities in China as well New York City and Los Angeles.

It’s unclear whether this will be enough to attract a lot of interest from Chinese and USA boxing fans in this fight because America fans tend to get more excited about fights that take place in the U.S, and this one will be in China.

Who’s next in the Floyd Mayweather Lottery? An Analysis and Prediction

floyd666By Dallas Orysiuk: Floyd “Money” Mayweather is arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time, and undoubtedly the current number one pound for pound fighter in the world. Being the highest paid athlete, thanks to his 6 fight deal with ShowTime, he has 5 fights left to go. The question looms whether Floyd will fulfill the contract and fight the total of 6 fights. “Money” definitely will fight a few more times, and the way he looked against Guerrero there is no doubt that Floyd still has plenty left in the tank.

After his masterful performance and the absolute destruction of the tough, always game, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, the question is who can offer Floyd any challenge whatsoever, and who will Floyd pick for their next career high pay day? Here is a breakdown of all potential opponents, realistic or not.

Should Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. move up to 168?

chavez9By Gerardo Granados: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has struggled to make 160 pounds limit in the past and after his long suspension it has been reported that he would face either Martin Murray at 160 or Brian Vera at 165 pounds depending on the weight he is able to shred off.

It’s clear that he drops more than just 20 pounds to make the middleweight limit so why not move up to 168?

Chavez Jr. is highly criticized but certainly he is a charismatic fighter who draws the attention of boxing fans. Even Andre Ward has showed interest to fight him, why? Not just that he has the ideal style to defeat him but because a win against Chavez Jr. might allow him to drive attention to himself.

Broner will need to beat Canelo if he wants to become a huge PPV star

broner3436By Dan Ambrose: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) sees himself becoming the first boxer to ever make one billion dollars in the sport. However, at this point it’s questionable whether he’ll ever be a pay per view attraction, period.

While he does bring in good ratings on Showtime and previously did on HBO when he fought on that network, he lacks big name opposition needed for him to be catapulted to a huge PPV star like his hero Floyd Mayweather Jr. Golden Boy wants Broner to be a huge PPV star, but he’s not going to get there facing the likes Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Amir Khan, Ricky Burns, Devon Alexander, Kell Brook, Paulie Malignaggi, Victor Ortiz or Keith Thurman.

Angulo vs. Lara: Alfredo will need a knockout to win on June 8th

angulo8By Dan Ambrose: Junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) might have made a big, big mistake in choosing to face boxer/puncher Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) on June 8th because he does not have the style that will give the 30-year-old Lara any problems.

Angulo says he thinks he likes the fight and he wants to take on the top fighters like Lara, but I think it’s a really match-up for the slow as molasses Angulo.

Lara is beatable, but it takes a fighter with really good inside fighting skills and a high pressure offense to smother what he can do. Carlos Molina was able to stay on top of Lara and force him into an inside war when they fought two years ago in their 10 round draw in 2011. Angulo isn’t as good at cutting off the ring and smothering his opponents the way that Molina.

Haye vs. Charr postponed, not cancelled, says Booth

By Scott Gilfoid: Adam Booth, the trainer/manager for former two division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s), says Haye’s fight with Manuel Charr isn’t off. They still plan on fighting him but they’ll need to postpone it until Haye’s dislocated left hand heals, whenever that is.

Haye was supposed to be fighting Charr next month on June 29th at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK, but Haye injured his left hand while training and won’t be ready by next month to fight the #8 WBC Charr.

James DeGale vs. Sebastien Demers on Friday, May 17th in Quebec, Canada

degale345By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight contender James DeGale (14-1, 9 KO’s) will continue his slow, slow trot to a title shot this Saturday night against journeyman Sebastien Demers (31-5, 11 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout at the Hilton Lac Leamy, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

It’s been a year and a half since Demers last fought and he’s lost his last three fights and looked terrible in each one of them. He was knocked out by Renan St. Juste in 2 rounds in December 2010, and in three rounds in June of 2010. Demers was a pretty good fighter until he met up with Dionsio Miranda in 2008. He lost that fight by a 10 round decision and took a lot of punishment in that bout.
