Trout picks Canelo over Cotto

trout68(Photo credit: Goosen Tutor) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA 154 pound champion Austin Trout (27-2, 14 KOs) is pulling for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) to defeat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) when/if they face each other next year on May 2nd on Cinco de Mayo.

Trout thinks he’d have a better chance of getting a rematch against the 34-year-old Cotto than he would against Canelo because of his previous win over Cotto in 2012. Canelo defeated Trout by a very close decision in 2013 in a fight that could have gone Trout’s way.

Trout wants Canelo, Cotto and Lara after one more tune-up fight

trout33By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA 154 pound champion Austin Trout (27-2, 14 KOs) says he wants one more tune-up fight to get the rust out before he goes after the top tier fighters. Trout, 28, specifically wants rematches with Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara.

Trout beat Cotto in 2012, but then lost to both Canelo and Lara by 12 round decisions. Trout fought well enough to deserve a win in the Canelo fight, but he was up against it by facing a popular fighter like Canelo in Texas. It was a situation where Trout needed to really pound Canelo if he had wanted to get a win.

Trout-Dawson tonight on ESPN2 from Temecula, California

canelo6By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) will be trying to get back on the winning track tonight against Daniel Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs) in a 12 round fight televised by ESPN2 on Friday Night Fights from the Pechanga Resort & Casino, in Temecula, California, USA.

This is perhaps the fight that Trout should have taken last December as a confidence booster instead of facing WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, because that was clearly not the right fight for Trout to take following his somewhat controversial 12 round unanimous decision defeat to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in April of 2013.

Austin Trout expects Daniel Dawson to brawl on Friday

trout111By Allan Fox: This Friday, Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) is going to be trying to resurrect his sinking career against Daniel Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs) in a fight televised by ESPN at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Trout lost his last two fights so he needs a win here if he wants to work his way back to title contention. He’s ranked #7 WBA, and he could eventually get another title shot against WBA champion Erislandy Lara if he can put together 4-6 good wins. Lara isn’t going to give him another shot unless he’s the mandatory, and Canelo Alvarez isn’t interested in fighitng Trout again.

Trout is doing the right thing by taking on a contender in #15 WBA Dawson, because he’ll get moved up the rankings a lot faster than if he were to faced C level fighters like some fighters do to climb the rankings.
