Was Arturo Gatti the last great Italian boxer?

By Gerardo Granados: I am a big fan of the middleweight Champion Jake LaMotta, his inside the ring fighting style and on times troubled life outside the ring, are impossible for me to not to follow. Maybe there a couple of young fight fans who don’t know him, perhaps the reader is thinking to skip the article, possibly the older fight fans can recall a lot more names of Italian boxers who pleased the crowd with their fan friendly fighting style, but for sure the void left by them in the last years, sooner than later must be fulfill.

Although I rather not give nationalities to any boxer, it is true that a couple of nationalities have produced great fighters thru the years. And the rivalries among the fan bases make fights special to watch. The Puerto Rico versus Mexico boxing rivalry is a tradition in prize fighting.

The biggest and loudest fan bases do have an impact on Pay Per View numbers and can make a boxer become a huge star overnight. When Floyd Mayweather Jr fought Ricky Hatton it was sensational to see the American fans antagonize the United Kingdom fan base.

If you lose your “0” you got to go!!

Image: If you lose your “0” you got to go!!By Paul Walsh: Boxing has changed, so much so that the most important thing is keeping your coveted “0” intact.   Gone are the days of the best fighting the best in their prime, it is all about keeping the undefeated record in place as that is what sells.  My fear is that unfortunately we are going to miss out on some serious talent because of it.

This past weekend’s fights at Atlantic City was a prime example of what I am talking about, two fast rising unbeaten fighters (Adrien Broner and Seth Mitchell) put their “0” on the line.  Both fights ended spectacularly but only one “0” remained.  Broner’s and with that he’s stock rose whereas Mitchell’s dropped dramatically.

The Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward Trilogy: A glimpse of the golden age –the three fights that took us back to the glory days of the 40s and 50s slugfests

Image: The Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward Trilogy: A glimpse of the golden age –the three fights that took us back to the glory days of the 40s and 50s slugfestsBy Jack Dutton: Who would’ve guessed, that on a May Saturday night, 2002, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Ct, in which no championship belt was up for grabs, we would observe a display of heart, courage and shear tenacity not seen in a handful of title fights which have occurred in the past decade. The fight, as any true boxing fan should know, was the start of the Gatti-Ward trilogy and that Saturday night in May would become heralded as not only candidate for fight of the year, nor decade but bout of the century.

Is there a modern day Arturo Gatti?

By Darren Munsey: The late great Arturo ‘’Thunder’’ Gatti (40-9-0) captured our hearts with his hell for leather fighting style. He was far from the most gifted boxer we have even seen but no one can deny he had the heart of a lion and was involved on several classic toe to toe brawls we will never forget.

Ultimate Super Six – The Light-Welterweights

Image: Ultimate Super Six - The Light-WelterweightsBy Shaun Campbell: Although the current Super-middleweight Super Six Tournament has all but fallen apart with half it’s original cast dropping out, the basic idea of the competition did impress me. So although I am not a writer who usually considers hypothetical match ups, it got me thinking about who would be my ultimate super-six fighter to go at it in a tournament throughout the weight classes. And I decided to start of with my favourite weight class, the Light-Welterweights. These fighters from recent era’s are all included due to the fact I think they would give great entertainment, even though some of them may not have the expected record of a ultimate fighter (such as Micky Ward). Please leave your opinions.

Gatti Dies, Wife Being Investigated – News

gatti323By Eric Hernandez: I woke up this Sunday morning like I always do, walked the dog, put the coffee on the stove and reached for the laptop as I allowed myself some serenity before church. Today, there would be no serenity, there it was in bold headlines with a picture of Arturo Gatti raising his hands “GATTI FOUND DEAD.”
