Mares decisions Moreno

Image: Mares decisions Moreno(Photo credit: Showtime Sports) By Dan Ambrose: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) defeated challenger Anselmo Moreno (33-2-1, 12 KO’s) by a hard fought 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to retain his World Boxing Council 122 pound title at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. 116-110, 116-110, and 120-106. The scoring was kind of off on one of the judges card that scored it 120-106.

That’s pretty sad scoring of a fight because there’s no way Mares won every round of the fight. In fact, I thought Moreno had won at least six of the rounds, so it’s sad to see a judge that had Mares winning every round.

Image: Mares decisions Moreno; Cleverly defeats Hawk; Angulo stops Casarez; Santa Cruz crushes Zaleta(Photo: Showtime) By Eric Thomas: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 14 KO’s) emerged victorious on Saturday night with a 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (33-2-1, 12 KO’s) in a fight that was for Mares’ World Boxing Council 122 pound title at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Mares was given credit for a blown call by referee Raul Caiz Jr., who credited Mares with a knockdown in the 5th round despite Mares having landed only a shot to Moreno’s buttocks. Caiz Jr. also took a point away from Moreno for pulling down on Mares’ head in the 11th round, but failed to take points away for Mares for his numerous low blows landed in the fight.

Mares vs. Moreno

Mares weighed in at 121.8 lbs during Friday’s weigh-in and looked to be in sensational shape. He’s definitely ready for this fight and he understands that he’s going to have to put steady but intelligent pressure on the 27-year-old Moreno for the entire fight because he’s so good at moving around and being slick.

Mares to try and stay calm against Moreno on Saturday

Image: Mares to try and stay calm against Moreno on Saturday(Photo: Esther Lin/SHOWTIME) By Jason Kim: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his title this Saturday night against 27-year-old Panamanian Anselmo Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KO’s) in a toss up fight on Showtime at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Mares said “If you miss, you cannot become frustrated. You have to keep working and that is one of the biggest keys for me.”

Mares, 26, is going to have to figure out a way to solve the Moreno puzzle because this guy is very hard to hit and he does really well against fighters that try to crowd him the way that Mares will likely be doing.

Mares vs. Moreno: Abner in big test on 11/10

Image: Mares vs. Moreno: Abner in big test on 11/10By Allan Fox: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KO’s) has a stiff challenge on November 10th against Panamanian Anselmo Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KO’s) in a toss up fight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Moreno, 27, is a champion in his own right but at bantamweight with his WBA Super bantamweight belt.

The only reason that Moreno is moving up in weight for this fight is for the good payday he’ll receive as well as the chance to prove himself better than Mares. There’s not a lot of good opposition at bantamweight for Moreno to fight, which is why he’s taking this fight against Mares at 122.

Fan survey shows public want Donaire to face Mares-Moreno winner

Image: Fan survey shows public want Donaire to face Mares-Moreno winnerBy Gareth Rees: Following Nonito Donaire’s (30-1) dominant 9th round TKO victory over Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3) on Saturday night, RingTV.com did a survey asking fans who they want Donaire to face next. Somewhat surprisingly the Mares-Moreno winner came out on top with more than 37% of the vote with undefeated Guillermo Rigondeaux second in the voting with 32% of votes.

Either of those fights would be exciting for fans and would really decide who is the top dog in the Super Bantamweight division as well as having pound-for-pound implications. Fans would be hoping that any of these future fights will not be a let-down like Saturday night’s fight, as the highly rated Nishioka was very disappointing being overly defensive for the majority of the fight.

Mares-Moreno, Angulo-Casarez, Arreola-TBA, Santa-Cruz-TBA on November 10th

Image: Mares-Moreno, Angulo-Casarez, Arreola-TBA, Santa-Cruz-TBA on November 10thBy Allan Fox: In an exciting match-up coming up on November 10th, WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KO’s) will be putting his title on the line against what many boxing fans see as the best fighter in the bantamweight division in WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KO’s) at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

This is a big, big test for the 26-year-old Mares, as the 27-year-old Moreno is a highly skilled southpaw fighter known for his defensive skills as well as his good counter punching ability. He’s not the inside fighter that Mares is, but he’s capable of fighting well on the outside. This is a going to be a really tough fight for Mares because Moreno is completely different from the guys that Mares has been fighting up to this point. Mares has beaten guys like Vic Darchinyan, Eric Morel, and Joseph Agbeko.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Raul Casarez on Mares-Moreno card on November 10th

Image: Alfredo Angulo vs. Raul Casarez on Mares-Moreno card on November 10thBy Dan Ambrose: Former junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-2, 17 KO’s) will be taking an easy tune-up bout against little known middleweight Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KO’s) on November 10th in a Showtime televised bout on the undercard of the WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, United States, according to RingTV.

There’s not much to get excited about with the 25-year-old Casarez. He’s been fighting pretty much exclusively 3rd tier opposition his entire career. Casarez tried stepping it up a couple of times against 2nd tier opposition in Rudy Cisneros and Michael Soberanis in the past and was beaten by both of them.
