Khan To Challenge for WBO Title in 2009 – News

khan433By Nate Anderson: On the latest installment of the Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour show, promoter Frank Warren said that due to Amir Khan’s win over number #1 ranked WBO lightweight contender Marco Antonio Barrera last Saturday night, Khan is in the position to fight for the WBO title later this year. Apparently, Warren originally had designs for Khan to face former WBO lightweight champion Nate Campbell, but when he failed to make weight last month, and was subsequently stripped of his IBF/WBA/WBO titles, Warren had to look in a different direction for a fight for Khan.

As Soon as Khan Steps It Up Again, He Loses

khan44554By Scott Gilfoid: Maybe I’m one of the few writers that see Amir Khan’s (20-1, 16 KOs) 5th round stoppage win over the cut up Marco Antonio Barrera (65-7, 43 KOs) as being an empty one, because the victory was an empty gesture. Khan was faster and better than Barrera, showing that he could beat Marco after he was cut from a head butt. Many people already though that Khan would be too fast for Barrera going into the fight and it was hardly revealing that he was able to dominate the smaller Barrera.

Roach: “He’ll [Khan] Be My Next World Champion”

khan4354By Matt Stein: Moments after Saturday’s fight between Amir Khan (20-1, 16 KOs) and Marco Antonio Barrera (65-7, 43 KOs) at the M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, Lancashire, Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach said “He’s [Khan] maturing now; maturing more and more. He’ll be my next world champion for sure.” Khan, 22, had just finished dominating the 35-year-old Barrera and ultimately stopping him near the end of the 5th round due to a cut stemming from a 1st round head butt between the two fighters.

The Development of Amir Khan

khan45634445By John Wight: One of the most exciting and compelling aspects to the sport of boxing is the manner in which one fight can completely change a fighter’s fortunes, turning an up and coming fighter with potential into a genuine contender or conversely ending the illustrious career of former world champions, legends even.

Amir Khan v Marco Antonio Barrera – Khan TD5

khan534563By James Hughes: Amir Khan put in a composed performance to defeat ring-legend Marco Antonio Barrera by a 5th round technical decision in the main event at the M.E.N. Arena (Manchester, England). Khan’s youth was a sizeable factor in the outcome, as was a nasty cut to Barrera from an accidental clash of heads in the opening round. Khan’s great handspeed and good footwork allowed him to get in and out of range, enabling him to land combinations almost at will, (which he did so accurately), while an old-looking Barrera whose vision was hampered by the continual flow of blood, could not get near his younger, faster and stronger challenger.

Look For Khan To Stop Barrera

khan4345634By Dave Lahr: Make no mistake about it, Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs) will be coming to fight hard on Saturday night and unless lightweight Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) brings his A-game, he might find himself on the canvas with his career in utter shambles. However, my guess is that Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach has set up the perfect game plan to defeat Barrera on Saturday night at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, Lancashire.

Roach: “If Khan Can’t Beat This Guy [Barrera], It’s Over”

khan43434By William Mackay: This Saturday night, Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) has a lot riding on the line when he meets up with former three time champion Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs) in a lightweight bout at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, Lancashire. At 22, Khan has a lot to lose in this fight, with his trainer Freddie Roach saying “If he can’t this guy at this point in his career, I believe it’s over, yes. I believe then he’ll never be a world champion, and if you can’t be a world champion this sport, you don’t belong it in it.”

Barrera Predicts Easy Victory Over Khan

barrera346533By Eric Thomas: Three-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6. 43 KOs) is predicting not only that he’ll beat Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday night at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, but it will be even easier than his victory over British boxing great Naseem Hamed, who Barrera defeated by a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision eight years ago in April 2001. Hamed would fight only more time in his career before hanging up his gloves and falling into inactivity.

Does Khan’s Stock Go Up If He Beats Barrera?

khan435656By Sean McDaniel: Whether lightweight Amir Khan (19-1, 15 KOs) realizes it or not, he probably stands more to lose if things go wrong for him on Saturday night against Marco Antonio Barrera (65-6, 43 KOs). After all, Khan is 22, at the start of his career and still is hoping to make a name for himself in the professional boxing world. In the case of Barrera, he has already made his fortune, won numerous titles as a featherweight and super featherweight and is at the end of his career.
