Will Khan use Cortez in the future to referee his fights?

Image: Will Khan use Cortez in the future to referee his fights?By William Mackay: After seeing how good a job referee Joe Cortez did in breaking up the action when Marcos Maidana was trying to work inside on WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan last Saturday night, I wonder if Khan and Golden Boy Promotions will be sure use Cortez in the future? I think they should. If you got a fighter that isn’t a good inside fighter like Khan, it helps to have a referee that has a habit of separating fighters when they’re trying to battle in close. For Khan, it would be a big plus if he can fight only on the outside because he’s vulnerable in close, as we saw last Saturday night.

Breidis Prescott calls out Khan – “Let’s do it again”

Image: Breidis Prescott calls out Khan - "Let's do it again"By William Mackay: If WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) is looking for revenge for his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott (23-2, 19 KO’s), then he has the perfect opportunity now. Prescott, 27, sent out a press release today calling out Khan for his next fight. Khan is coming off a 12 round decision to Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) last Saturday night, and is now looking for someone to fight on April 16th in the UK when Khan fights again. Prescott maybe the perfect opponent if Khan wants to quiet his critics and prove that his loss to Prescott was just a case of Khan not being prepared for the fight instead of being a glass-jawed fighter.

Roach thinks Khan can beat Mayweather

Image: Roach thinks Khan can beat MayweatherBy Jason Kim: Trainer Freddie Roach wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. as future opponent for his fighter Amir Khan in the worst way. Roach doesn’t seem interested in letting Khan mature as a fighter and prove that last weekend’s uneven performance against Marcos Maidana was just another fluke. Roach wants Khan to fight Mayweather next year. Khan defeated Maidana last weekend by a 12 round decision but was staggered multiple times by Maidana in the 10th, and unceasingly battered in the remaining rounds of the fight.

Maidana was the real star from Saturday’s fight – Khan booed at the end of fight

Image: Maidana was the real star from Saturday's fight - Khan booed at the end of fightBy Scott Gilfoid: A star was born last Saturday night when the talented Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) pounded WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) from pillor to post in the last three rounds of the fight but came up short on the judges’ scorecards, losing by a 12 round decision. Taking away the needless point deduction from Maidana for elbowing Joe Cortez, and all the breaks in the action that Cortez was doing when Maidana was trying to finish Khan off, I think Maidana would have won the fight last Saturday. Maidana looked like pure gold in that fight against a reluctant fighter. I know this is upsetting news for Khan’s British fans, because they actually think looked good for some reason. I guess love is blind.

British boxing on the rise

Image: British boxing on the riseBy Stuart Mcleod: Throughout boxing history Britain has had many champions held in high regard such as Lennox Lewis, Henry Cooper, John Conteh, Frank Bruno, Prince Naseem etc… the list goes on. Britain has also had its fair share of domestic dust ups for world titles such as the Benn v Eubank trilogy, Collins who fought both, Bruno v Lewis, Buchanan v Watt. British boxing has always produced stars that have eventually gone on to fight in America and produce the goods when it has been needed.

Prediction: Khan will never be the same again after the savage beating he took from Maidana

Image: Prediction: Khan will never be the same again after the savage beating he took from MaidanaBy Dan Ambrose: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) took a Cotto-esque type beating last Saturday night against the powerful Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) en route to barely winning by a 12 round decision. Khan was staggered in the 10th and looked hurt in the remaining rounds of the fight as he took one big shot after another from Maidana. However, I have a strong feeling that Khan will never be the same fighter after this bout because he took too many hard shots and these are the type of punches that greatly shorten a career.

Khan isn’t ready for Mayweather now or ever: Why is he being rushed into the fight?

Image: Khan isn't ready for Mayweather now or ever: Why is he being rushed into the fight?By William Mackay: All you have to do is take one look at rounds 10 through 12 of last Saturday’s bout between Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) and Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) to know that Khan isn’t ready for a fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. Khan, 24, was badly staggered in the 10th and took terrible one-sided punishment in the last rounds of the fight. This wasn’t the strong performance that his handlers and boxing fans were hoping it would be.

De La Hoya sees Khan as the best fighter in the 140-pound division

Image: De La Hoya sees Khan as the best fighter in the 140-pound divisionBy Dan Ambrose: Despite looking terrible in the last three rounds of Amir Khan’s close 12 round unanimous decision win over Marcos Maidana last Saturday night, Khan’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has already proclaimed Khan as the best fighter in the light welterweight division even though Khan still hasn’t fought the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander bout.

Did Cortez’s breaks in the action allow Khan to survive against Maidana?

Image: Did Cortez's breaks in the action allow Khan to survive against Maidana?By Eric Thomas: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) dodged a bullet on Saturday night when he was able to survive being badly hurt by the hard punching Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) in the 10th round and make it through the remainder of the fight by holding Maidana and running. The movement from Khan was fine and perfectly reasonable, but Khan’s constant holding of Maidana by hooking one arm at a time wasn’t okay. However, what made it even worse was that with Maidana still with one arm free while being held and tagging Khan over and over again, referee Joe Cortez stepped in repeatedly to separate Khan and Maidana during these occasions.
