Skill or Opposition that gets the win?

Image: Skill or Opposition that gets the win?By Robert Elmore: Heart, courage, and guts are good in boxing. They certainly are needed just to even climb between the ropes. But in my opinion, those things don’t win fights. It takes skill. Now depending on you ask and depending on the fighter, people will say that it’s the level of opposition and not the skill that gets the job done.

The opposition can only go so far. Let me explain. No fighter has fought top competition their entire career. But when they did face the top level fighter, they came out on top and some did not. And that’s where the skill level kicks in. The fighter may have been a B level fighter, but they probably fought guys who fought A level competition at some period in their career. This prepares them for the A level. Every fighter has an agenda. Heavyweights are hard to measure because there is no super heavyweight division to them to go to. But for those in lower weight classes, there is a lot of room.

Would Hatton fight Adrien Broner?

Image: Would Hatton fight Adrien Broner?By Scott Gilfoid: We saw in Ricky Hatton’s prime that he was sometimes selective in the types of fighters that he took on. Hatton never agreed to fight Junior Witter despite the fact that he was clearly the #2 light welterweight in the UK during Hatton’s prime.

Hatton is now making a comeback and he’s taking a fairly easy path by aiming at Vyacheslav Senchenko and Paulie Malignaggi, two fighters that are hardly in the class of the top welterweights like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto. You can say those three fighters are worlds above Senchenko and Malignaggi. Facing Senchenko and Malignaggi is a pretty weak move in my book. And if Hatton retires off of those fights, that’s WEAK move to me. He might as well have stayed retired.

De La Hoya: Broner is Mayweather, Hopkins and myself in one package

Image: De La Hoya: Broner is Mayweather, Hopkins and myself in one packageBy Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya sees newly crowned WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) as being a combination of three of the top fighters in boxing for the past two decades in terms of talent. De La Hoya believes that Broner will be a huge pay per view star in the near future.

De La Hoya said to RingTV “Broner, to me, is Floyd Mayweather, [Bernard] Hopkins, myslef, you can name them all, all wrapped into one. That’s who Broner is.”

Broner, Froch, Bellew, Banks: What did we learn?

Image: Broner, Froch, Bellew, Banks: What did we learn?By Rusty Nate: Well after a wonderful weekend of fights what did we learn from it all? We’ll start at the bottom and work up……

Bellew Vs Bolonti – UD

I think this was an amazing fight. Not because it was full of knock downs or because they both went to out and out war but because it showed us a HUGE amount about the character of Tony Bellew.

Broner unlikely to step into the ring against Burns

Image: Broner unlikely to step into the ring against BurnsBy Marcus Stewart: Newly crowned WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner stated to HBO that he’d fight anyone, be that at lightweight or weights above. I can’t see this being true, considering the fact that Ricky Burns would most likely spank him in a unification bout. Adrien Broner wants nothing to do with the Scottish talent.

There has been a lot of talk about them fighting but I don’t get why? Adrien Broner is overly hyped up by the American media and overall has a very basic style that is easy to exploit. Broner was exposed embarrassingly against the hard punching Daniel Ponce de Leon. He was hit with some many body shots, it looked like he didn’t know how to cover up and block punches.

Adrien Broner interested in Marquez or Burns for next fight

Image: Adrien Broner interested in Marquez or Burns for next fightBy Scott Gilfoid: After totally destroying the fight that most boxing experts considered to be the best fighter in the lightweight division last night in WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco, Adrien Broner gave a road map of where he’d like to go in his next fight in early next year saying he’d like to fight either Juan Manuel Marquez or Ricky Burns.

In an interview by RingTV, Broner said “Marquez can still make 135. Ricky Burns. He has a good following. We can make that fight in Vegas, but we’re not going over there.”

Adrien Broner: Where to next?

Image: Adrien Broner: Where to next?Like most people I haven’t seen Adrien Broner’s earlier fights, but a quick glance at his record looks like it was plain sailing for his first 19 fights with only 3 of those going the distance. Granted this record may be flattering as he didn’t fight anyone of note but in his last few fights he’s looked as impressive as you’d hope a fighter who idolizes and models himself on Floyd Mayweather should look. It’s unfair on the 23 year old to compare him to the best fighter of his generation but the similarities are unmissable.

The way he stalks his opponents using the windshield wiper defense, leaning back throwing sharp straight right hands and discarding right hand punches with a casual roll of the shoulder reminds you of only one person and while I’m hesitant to claim he’ll accomplish as much as Mayweather it’s difficult to see him being far outside the top 10 p4p rankings for the next 10 years. The only problem for the problem now is which route to take next.

Broner won’t beat Burns

Image: Broner won’t beat BurnsBy Dallan O’ Donnell: After his 8th round stoppage of Antonio DeMarco last night, Adrien Broner has become a bigger draw in the sport and he now honestly believes he is the next ‘big thing’ once Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio have retired. But the truth of the matter is Broner’s world will collapse once he faces Ricky Burns.

Burns, the WBO champion has called on Broner to fight him, yet Broner has had no interest in facing the Scottish world Champion.

Broner beats Antonio DeMarco by 8th round stoppage

Image: Broner beats Antonio DeMarco by 8th round stoppageBy Marcus Stewart: Adrien Broner managed to capture the WBC lightweight championship from Antonio DeMarco. The fight was stopped after the corner man through in the towel as DeMarco’s corner believed that their man was in no position to continue.

After the fight Adrien Broner said to HBO that he’d fight anyone and that he didn’t care who. I doubt that’s true somehow. The smaller Broner I can see being dominated by the much more talented Scot which is that of Ricky Burns. He has the better power, better foot movements and all round better boxing ability. He’s beaten some very credible opponents while Broner is still yet to step up to the hype that he’s created for himself.

Broner needs a bigger name than Ricky Burns for his next fight

Image: Broner needs a bigger name than Ricky Burns for his next fightBy Scott Gilfoid: I know there’s already been talk in the past of Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) possibly fighting a unification bout against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) in the first quarter of 2013, but I think Broner and his promoters at Golden Boy should forget about those small-time plans and look for a MUCH, MUCH bigger name than that.

Broner facing Burns is a fight that won’t resonate with the United States boxing fans and it’s not even worth wasting a valuable fight for Broner. It’s clear that Burns isn’t in Broner’s league, as it was even before Broner destroyed World Boxing Council lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-3-1, 21 KO’s) by an 8th round stoppage last night in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
